Balanced cantilever construction is extensively used in the construction of prestressed concrete (PSC) box-girder bridges. Shear-lag effect is usually considered in finished bridges, while the cumulative shear-lag effect in bridges during balanced cantilever construction is considered only rarely. In this paper, based on the balanced cantilever construction sequences of large-span PSC box-girder bridges, the difference method is employed to analyze the cumulative shear-lag effect of box girders with varying depth under the concrete segments' own weight. During cantilever construction, no negative shear-lag effect is generated, and the cumulative shear-lag effect under the balanced construction procedure is greater than the instantaneous shear-lag effect in which the full dead weight is applied to the entire cantilever. Three cross-sections of Jianjiang Bridge were chosen for the experimental observation of shear-lag effect, and the experimental results are in keeping with the theoretical results of cumulative shear-lag effect. The research indicates that only calculating the instantaneous shear-lag effect is not sufficiently safe for practical engineering purposes.
This paper aims at estimating instantaneous prestress losses by measuring the actual prestress forces in prestressed concrete (PSC) box girder bridges. Measurement were taken to study initial prestress losses such as friction losses and slip losses. A new strain gauge system was developed to measure strains in internal tendons. The system was installed on a total of 20 tendons in a PSC box girder bridges. The variation of prestress forces were monitored during prestressing tendon and after prestress transfer. The prestress losses are also calculated including friction losses and slip losses. The measured data were compared with the theoretical values. The result shows that the measured prestress forces agree well with the theoretical values. It is shown that prestress force of each strand in the same tendon is a bit different. This study also shows that prestress losses of continuity tendons during prestress transfer are significantly different each other, which results from the variety of buttress location and tendon profile. The present study provides realistic information on the estimation of actual prestress forces and losses in PSC box girder bridges.
Extradosed PSC Box bridges, newly emerging type of structures in construction market, have a characteristic in that external tendons are used for strengthening PSC Box girder like stay cables in cable stayed bridges. In this study, a series of constructions stage analysis procedure, including initial shape analysis, backward analysis and forward analysis, have been performed in order to investigate long-term behavior of extradosed PSC box bridges, using PCCAP-a computer program for time-dependent stage analysis of PSC cable stayed bridges. CEB-FIP 1978 model was used for the consideration of time-dependent effect of concrete material. Showing the validity of the analysis results with RM SPACE FRAME, it has been confirmd that time-dependent effects become less consequential as the stiffness of girder becomes larger.
In this study a 3-dimensional analytical model is developed, which can analyses dynamic responses of curved bridges subject to moving vehicles. A 5-axle semi-trailer is modeled to simulate the actual tire forces that are redistributed by vehicle rolling effect due to the centrifugal force. The 1-span curved bridge with two steel box girders is modeled using the frame elements. The dynamic response characteristics of curved box girder bridges are examined and compared for two different support conditions. One is the case that two shoes are arranged at the outer sides of box girders with larger space between the two shoes and the other is that two shoes at the center of each box girder. In the curved bridges, the dynamic effect of moving vehicles influences the reaction force much more than other responses, such as displacement or stress, especially the upward reaction of inner-radius shoes. It is more advantageous for the reaction considering dynamic effect when shoes are arranged further at the outer sides of box girders than when shoes at the center of each box. The shoes for curved bridges with two-box girder system should be arranged to have larger distance.
Tolerable vertical displacement of a bridge is dependent on the superstructure-type, slope, span, and etc.. In the design stage, however, resultant force of cross section is examined supposed that the settlement is 1 cm at the bearing point. And the 1cm is sometimes considered as if the criteria of allowable foundation settlement. It is needed to establish the criteria of the tolerable displacement for the small and middle bridges which are widely used in domestic area. The design data of domestic bridges including expressway bridges were collected and analyzed according to the types of superstructures and foundations. And numerical simulations were conducted for RC rigid frame bridges, PSC girder bridges, IPC girder bridges, PSC box girder bridges, and steel box girder bridges to examine the tolerable displacements.
It is reported that the amount of reinforcements for domestic PSC box girder bridges is used two times more that those for foreign PSC box girder bridges, which is considered to be irrational and uneconomical. Therefore, we have come to the conclusion through this study that the advanced design direction can reduce the amount of reinforcements under the condition that the static load test and the nonlinear analysis for the specimen of the PSC box girder bridge with reduced reinforcements which is designed by advanced design direction was carried out in order to verify the validity of the advanced design direction.
This study is intended to propose practical but systematic and rational approaches for proof load test and integrity assessment of segmental PC box-girder bridges. The proposed models cover the whole range of field tests and assessment of such as inspections, nondestructive tests, static and dynamic load tests, structural analysis, and integrity assessment for the evaluation of load carrying capacity, serviceability, and durability of PC box-girder bridges. They are applied to a newly constructed precast segmental PC box-girder bridge which is a part of the Seoul interior circuit elevated expressway.
In this paper, the prestressing order of tendons is studied to minimize a bursting force of an anchorage. The bursting forces is a primary factor of anchorage failures. The forces of the anchorage depend on the prestressing order and size of the tendons, if a lot of tendons are introduced to the anchorage. Many studies have been made to analyze the bursting force of the anchorage. However, the studies have been limited to the bursting forces of the anchorage having one or two tendons. PSC box girder bridges usually have a lot of tendons. And the difference of the bursting forces lies in the prestressing order of the tendons. As a result of the lack of studies on the prestressing order for the bridges, the order depends on the designer's intuition and experiences. It may be stated that this study should be useful for determining the reasonable prestressing order of tendons for the PSC box girder bridges.
In case to look at considering affects of skew angles into the curved bridges, this study mainly focalized to compare and analyze of the influence of skew angles to curved bridges along with analysis of the behavior of entire construction in accordance with changes of skew angles and curvature. With explanation of macroscophic behavior of curved bridges with skew angles through this study, it is mostly to grasp with characteristics and structural weaknesses of skew curved bridges compared with straight skew bridges.
