This study investigates the effect of bovine heart surimi-like material (BHSM) used as a back fat replacer, on the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of frankfurter-type sausages. Frankfurter-type sausage with added BHSM had a higher moisture content and lower fat content than the control. In addition, the samples with added BHSM had higher pH, cooking loss and 2-thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) value and lower water exudation than the control. The sausage formulation with 40% BHSM was more effective in delaying lipid oxidation without affecting cooking loss compared to the 60% BHSM treatment sample. Results showed that hardness values increased upon replacement with BHSM, and sausages manufactured with 40% BHSM had higher lightness and lower redness values. Panelists found there were no differences in color, odor, and tenderness scores and the overall acceptability score found that treatment samples containing 20% and 40% BHSM were preferable to the control after storage for 14 d. These results indicate that fat replacement with BHSM was beneficial to the quality of frankfurter-type sausages, and acceptable reduced-fat products can be produced when back fat is replaced with up to 40% BHSM.
The frequency and distribution of lymphoma caused by bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection in various organs were investigated. Lymphoma samples were obtained from slaughtered cattle or from cattle submitted to the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service, Korea. Thirty female Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle aged over three years with the BLV-associated lymphoma were studied. None of the Korean native cattle (Hanwoo) had lymphoma in this study however. Lymphoma tissues were gray to pink in color, soft in consistency, and bulged from the cut surface. In advanced lymphoma tissues, there was great variety in the appearance of involved structures due to hemorrhage, necrosis, and/or calcification. Neoplastic tissues were observed in lymph nodes in all lymphoma cases. Intestine (96.4%), heart (88.9%), stomach (73.1%), and diaphragm (62.5%) were frequently involved with lymphoma. However, there was no lymphoma detected in liver. Large neoplastic masses, sometimes reaching the size of over 20 cm, were found in the abdominal cavities. It is suggested that metastasis of lymphomas occurs mainly via lymph based on gross observations; neoplasia may have been initiated in the serosal surface of the lung, heart, peritoneum, and numerous hollow organs in the abdominal cavity. Also many organs in the abdominal and thoracic cavity were affected by neoplastic tissues simultaneously. Characteristics observed in this study could be used as criteria to differentiate BLV-associated lymphoma from other nodular lesions in the slaughterhouse and as fundamental data to make clear the mechanism of metastasis or pathogenesis of EBL.
This report is concerned to our experience of 10 cases of open heart surgery under the extracorporeal circulation at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Capital Armed Forces General Hospital during the period between May, 1982 and February, 1983. 1. Six cases were male and two cases were female. Age was varied from 21 years to 50 years and mean age was 34 years. 2. The cases included 2 Ventricular Septal Defects, 1 Atrial Septal Defect, I Tetralogy of Fallot and 6 acquired valvular heart diseases. 3. The surgical managements were 3 primary repairs for Ventricular Septal Defects and Atrial Septal Defect, I total correction for Tetralogy of Fallot and 6 mitral valve replacements with bovine xenograft by Ionescu-Shiley combining 3 Tricuspid annuloplasties [ De Vega method ] and 1 deauricularization of left atrial appendage for acquired valvular heart diseases. 4. The average cardiopulmonary bypass time was 37 minutes for acyanotic congenital heart diseases and 92 minutes for cyanotic heart disease and acquired valvular heart diseases. And the average aortic cross clamping time was 19 minutes for the former and 70 minutes for the latter. 5. Postoperatively, there were 1 hemolytic anemia, 1 congestive heart failure, 1 hemolytic jaundice and 1 thermal burn as complications, but there was no operative mortality. 6. All patients received valve replacement were recommended anticoagulation with Persantin and Aspirin.
A 28 year-old male who had received Konno procedure twelve years ago with 23mmmechanical aortic valve and bovine pericardium with which his small aortic annulus, ventricular septum and right ventricular outflow tract had been enlarged was transferred due to sudden congestive heart failure. There were perforations on aortic and interventricular portion of bovine pericardial patch above and below the aortic valve, respectively, which was calcified and denaturated severely. The perforations seemed to be attributed to the cracks, resulting from mobility of mechanical aortic valvc itself and stiffness of calcified and denaturated bovine patch. We performed a redo Konno procedure applying PTFE patch.

Although medication is given to heart disease patients, conventional medication alone is not sufficient to treat heart disease. However, it has been reported that left ventricular assist device (LVAD) transplantation is an effective bridge to heart transplantation by assisting cardiac function. This study used long-term animal testing and emergency situations with a bovine model (Holstein) and canine model (Labrador-retriever) to evaluate the biocompatibility of LibraHeart-I (LH-1), which is a bent-tube type of LVAD that was developed in a previous study. In the long-term animal testing with the bovine model, the subjects survived for 49 days with no irregularities observed in their complete blood cell counts or the vital sign tests that were carried out during the test period. In short-term animal testing with the canine model, it was observed that blood did not remain inside the LH-I even without power support from an external drive source. In this study, the biocompatibility of the LH-I that was developed in a previous study was verified by the ejection performance during long-term animal testing and emergency situations.
Endocardial cushion defects is a rare congenital heart disease. We experienced two complete endocardial cushion defects[ECD] and three partial ones, which were successfully repaired between 1986 and 1987. In a patient of complete ECD, associated with secundum ASD, Pulmonary stenosis and Down`s syndrome, the atrial and ventricular septal defects were closed separately with bovine pericardium and Dacron patches respectively, and then pulmonary stenosis was relieved by transannular patch widening in addition to valvotomy and infundibulectomy. In another patient with complete ECD, small interventricular communication was closed with simple suture with pledget and primum ASD was closed with pericardial patch. In first patient of partial ECD, primum atrial septal defect was closed with pericardial patch. In second patient of partial ECD, associated with secundum ASD, direct closure of secundum ASD and patch closure of primum ASD were performed. In third patient of partial ECD, associated with patent foramen ovale[PFO], primum ASD was closed with bovine pericardial patch and PFO was closed directly. In all patient except third patient of partial ECD, mitral clefts were closed with three or four 5-0 prolene interrupted sutures. Transient A-V dissociation developed postoperatively in two patients and transient nodal rhythm developed postoperatively in other two patients. Heart failure in complete ECD with Down`s syndrome was overcome with medical treatment.
Since 1958 up to the end of October 31, 1980, 2032 cases of cardiovascular lesions were operated, including 1225 open heart surgery and 354 valve replacement patients. There were 1271 Congenital anomaly cases and 761 acquired lesions including 149 vascular lesions. Among 1~271 congenital malformations 819 cases belong to acyanotic and 452 to cyanotic group. Over all mortality was 11.1 %, consisting of 12.4% for congenital and 8.9% for acquired lesions. Mortality for 1225 open heart surgery cases was 15% and 13.8% for various 354 valve replacement cases. In most of the open heart surgery cases Shiley oxygenator was utilized and Ionescu-Shiley bovine pericardial xenograft bioprosthesis**** valves were used mainly for valve replacement.
Surface modification of glutaraldehyde fixed bovine pericardium (GFBP) was successfully carried out with hyaluronic acid (HA) derivatives. At first, HA was chemically modified with adipic dihydrazide (ADH) to introduce hydrazide functional group into the carboxyl group of HA backbone. Then, GFBP was surface modified by grafting HA-ADH to the free aldehyde groups on the tissue and the subsequent HA-ADH hydrogel coating. HA-ADH hydrogels could be prepared through selective crosslinking at low pH between hydrazide groups of HA-ADH and crosslinkers containing succinimmidyl moieties with minimized protein denaturation. When HAADH hydrogels were prepared at low pH of 4.8 in the presence of erythropoietin (EPO) as a model protein, EPO release was continued up to $85\%$ of total amount of loaded EPO for 4 days. To the contrary, only $30\%$ of EPO was released from HA-ADH hydrogels prepared at pH=7.4, which might be due to the denaturation of EPO during the crosslinking reaction. Because the carboxyl groups on the glucuronic acid residues are recognition sites for HA degradation by hyaluronidase, the HA-ADH hydrogels degraded more slowly than HA hydrogels prepared by the crosslinking reaction of divinyl sulfone with hydroxyl groups of HA. Following a two-week subcutaneous implantation in osteopontin-null mice, clinically significant levels of calcification were observed for the positive controls without any surface modification. However, the calcification of surface modified GFBP with HA-ADH and HA-ADH hydrogels was drastically reduced by more than $85\%$ of the positive controls. The anti-calcification effect of HA surface modification was also confirmed by microscopic analysis of explanted tissue after staining with Alizarin Red S for calcium, which followed the trend as observed with calcium quantification.
Cytochrome oxidase was purified from bovine-heart mitochondria and its enzymatic properties were examined. The purified cytochrome oxidase was identified by its absorption spectrum and chromatogram through gel filtration. The specific activity, purification degree and yield of purified cytochrome oxidase were 18 nmol/mg/ml/min, 24.83 fold and 0.93%, respectively. The activity of the enzyme assayed by a ferrocytochrome $c-O_2$ system was optimized at $25^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.5. Examining the effect of nonionic detergents established that cytochrome oxidase was deactivated by Triton X-100. The oxidase was activated by Tween 80 and deactivated by Tween 20. The Michaelis constant and maximum velocity of the oxidase for ferrocytochrome c were 0.032~0.044 mM and 0.019~0.021 mM/min, respectively. After adaption to basal diet for a week, experimental diets containing 6 mg Cu/kg, or zero mg Cu/kg, or 12 mg Cu/kg were fed to a control group, a copper-free group and a copper-rich group of Sprague-Dawley rats, respectively, for 4 weeks. The specific activities assayed for the ferrocytochrome $c-O_2$ system of isolated cytochrome oxidase from the rat liver of control, copper-free, and copper-rich group were 1.00, 1.19, and 0.878 nmol/mg/ml/min, respectively. Their degrees of purification were 11.38, 10.82 and 8.78 fold, respectively. The specific activities for liver and heart mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase of copper-free/copper-rich groups assayed using the ferrocytochrome $c-O_2$ system were 81.4% and 96.4%/64.1% and 61.1%, respectively, compared with those of the control.

Background: Bovine pericardium is one of the most widely used materials in bioprosthetic heart valves. Immunologic responses have been implicated as potential causes of limited durability of xenogenic valves. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of decellularization and ${\alpha}$-galactosidase (${\alpha}$-gal) to remove major xenoreactive antigens from xenogenic tissues. Materials and Methods: Recombinant Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron (B. thetaiotaomicron) ${\alpha}$-gal or decellularization, or both were used to remove ${\alpha}$-gal from bovine pericardium. It was confirmed by ${\alpha}$-gal-bovine serum albumin-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), high-performance anion exchange chromatography, flow cytometry, 3,3'-diaminobenzidine-staining, and lectin-based ELISA. The mechanical properties of bovine pericardium after decellularization or ${\alpha}$-gal treatment were investigated by tests of tensile-strength, permeability, and compliance. Collagen fiber rearrangement was also evaluated by a 20,000${\times}$ transmission electron microscope (TEM). Results: Recombinant B. thetaiotaomicron ${\alpha}$-gal could effectively remove ${\alpha}$-gal from bovine pericardium B. thetaiotaomicron (0.1 U/mL, pH 7.2) while recombinant human ${\alpha}$-gal removed it recombinant human ${\alpha}$-gal (10 U/mL, pH 5.0). There was no difference in the mechanical properties of fresh and recombinant ${\alpha}$-gal-treated bovine pericardium. Furthermore, the TEM findings demonstrated that recombinant ${\alpha}$-gal made no difference in the arrangement of collagen fiber bundles with decellularization. Conclusion: Recombinant B. thetaiotaomicron ${\alpha}$-gal effectively removed ${\alpha}$-gal from bovine pericardium with a small amount under physiological conditions compared to human recombinant ${\alpha}$-gal, which may alleviate the harmful xenoreactive immunologic responses of ${\alpha}$-gal. Recombinant ${\alpha}$-gal treatment had no adverse effects on the mechanical properties of bovine pericardium.
