Injection of microbubbles within the turbulent boundary layer has been investigated for several years as a method to achieve drag reduction. However, the physical mechanism of this phenomenon is not yet fully understood. Experiments in a channel flow for single phase (water) and two phase (water and microbubbles) flows with various void fraction values are studied for a Reynolds number of 5128 based on the half height of the channel and bulk velocity. The state-of-the art Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) measurement technique is used to measure the instantaneous full-field velocity components. Comparisons between turbulent statistical quantities with various values of local void fraction are presented to elucidate the influence of the microbubbles presence within the boundary layer. A decrease in the Reynolds stress distribution and turbulence production is obtained with the increase of microbubble concentration. The results obtained indicate a decorrelation of the streamwise and normal fluctuating velocities when microbubbles are injected within the boundary layer.
In this paper, a robust controller is proposed to achieve an accurate tracking for an uncertain nonlinear plant with actuator dynamics. The extent of parameter uncertainty can be quantified by using linear parameterization technique. A switching controller is proposed to guarantee the global asymptotic stability of the plant. In order to eliminate the chattering caused by the switching controller, a smoothing controller is designed using the boundary layer technique around the sliding surface and guarantees the uniform ultimate boundedness of the tracking error.
In object tracking, the template matching methods have been developed and frequently used. It is fast enough, but not robust to an object with the variation of size and shape. In order to overcome the limitation of the template matching method, this paper proposes a template update technique. After finding an object position using the correlation-based adaptive predictive search, the proposed method selects blocks which contain object's boundary. It estimates the motion of boundary using block matching, and then updates template. We applied it to IR image sequences including an approaching object. From the experimental results, the proposed method showed successful performance to track object.
The object boundary of an image plays an important role for image interpretation. In this paper, we introduce a concept of hierarchical mesh-based image segmentation for finding object boundaries. In each hierarchical layer, we employ neighborhood searching and boundary tracking methods to refine the initial boundary estimate. We also apply a local region growing method to define closed contours. Experimental results indicate that reliable segmentation of objects can be accomplished by the pro-posed tow complexity technique.
In this paper, a robust controller is proposed to achieve the accurate tracking for uncertain robot manipulators with hydraulic actuator dynamics. The parameter uncertainty can be quantified by the linear parameterization technique. A switching controller is proposed to guarantee the global asymptotic stability of the plant. In order to eliminate the chattering caused by the switching controller, a smoothing controller is proposed using the boundary layer technique around the sliding surface. It is shown that the smoothing controller guarantees the uniform ultimate boundedness of the tracking, error. The proposed controller shows good better tracking performance.
This paper proposed a framework for handover method in continuously tracking a person of interest across cooperative pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras. The algorithm here is based on a robust non-parametric technique for climbing density gradients to find the peak of probability distributions called the mean shift algorithm. Most tracking algorithms use only one cue (such as color). The color features are not always discriminative enough for target localization because illumination or viewpoints tend to change. Moreover the background may be of a color similar to that of the target. In our proposed system, the continuous person tracking across cooperative PTZ cameras by mean shift tracking that using color and shape histogram to be feature distributions. Color and shape distributions of interested person are used to register the target person across cameras. For the first camera, we select interested person for tracking using skin color, cloth color and boundary of body. To handover tracking process between two cameras, the second camera receives color and shape cues of a target person from the first camera and using linear color calibration to help with handover process. Our experimental results demonstrate color and shape feature in mean shift algorithm is capable for continuously and accurately track the target person across cameras.
Most material of engineering interest undergoes solidification process from liquid to solid state. Identifying the underlying mechanism during solidification process is essential to determine the microstructure of material which governs the physical properties of final product. In this paper, we expand our previous two-dimensional numerical technique to three-dimensional simulation for computing dendritic solidification process with fluid convection. We used Level Contour Reconstruction Method to track the moving liquid-solid interface and Sharp Interface Technique to correctly implement phase changing boundary condition. Three-dimensional results showed clear difference compared to two-dimensional simulation on tip growth rate and velocity.
