Beaches in estuaries, bays, and harbors are frequently contaminated with indicators of human pathogens such as fecal indicator bacteria. Tracking down the sources of contamination at these enclosed beaches is complicated by the many point and non-point sources that could potentially degrade water quality along the shore. A mathematical framework was developed to test quantitative relationships between fecal indicator bacteria concentration in ankle depth water at enclosed beaches, the loading rate of fecal indicator bacteria from non-point sources located along the shore, physical characteristics of the beach that affect the transport of fecal indicator bacteria across the beach boundary layer, and a background concentration of fecal indicator bacteria attributable to point sources of fecal pollution that impact water quality over a large region of the embayment. Field measurements of fecal indicator bacteria concentrations and water turbulence at an enclosed beach were generally consistent with predictions and assumptions of the mathematical model, and demonstrated its utility for assessing waste load of non-point sources, such as runoff, bather shedding, bird droppings, and tidal washing of contaminated sediments.
As a part of target motion analysis(TMA) with highly noisy bearings-only measurements from a passive sonar system, a nonlinear batch estimator is proposed to provide the initial estimates to a sequential estimator called the modified gain extended Kalman filter(MGEKF). Based on the system observability analysis of passive target tracking, a practical and effective method is suggested to determine the observer maneuvers for improved TMA performance through system observability enhancing. Also suggested is a method to determine observer location for enhanced system observability at the initial phase of TMA from various engagement boundaries which represent the relationship between observer-target relative geometrical data and system observability. The proposed TMA methods are tested by a series of computer simulation runs.
This paper presents a current sensorless maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control method for dual-mode photovoltaic (PV) module-type interleaved flyback inverters (ILFIs). This system, called the MIC (Module Integrated Converter), has been recently studied in small PV power generation systems. Because the MIC is an inverter connected to one or two PV arrays, the power system is not affected by problems with other inverters. However, since the each PV array requires an inverter, there is a disadvantage that the initial installation cost is increased. To overcome this disadvantage, this paper uses a flyback inverter topology. A flyback inverter topology has an advantage in terms of cost because it uses fewer parts than the other transformer inverter topologies. The MPPT control method is essential in PV power generation systems. For the MPPT control method, expensive dc voltage and current sensors are used in the MIC system. In this paper, a MPPT control method without current sensor where the input current is calculated by a simple equation is proposed. This paper also deals with dual-mode control. Simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the performance and effectiveness of the proposed current sensorless MPPT control method on a 110 [W] prototype.
A number of algorithm using the VSS(Variable Structure System) for uncertain dynamic system are developed. But, in these algorithms, the assumption that the uncertainties are bounded and their bounds are available to the designer is involved. And bounds on the uncertainties are an important clue to guarantee the stability of the closed loop system. However, sometimes bounds on the uncertainties may not be easily obtained because of the complexity of the structure of the uncertainties. Therefore, a methodology by which the boundary values on the uncertainties can be easily obtained is required. The VSS proposed in this proposal employ the new adaptive VSS scheme for uncertain dynamic system being estimated on line. The resulting control law is simple and easy to apply to on line computer control. It can also suppress chattering and maintain good tracking precision even if unmodeled dynamics are considered. And, a new method using nonlinear switching surface is introduced so that the speed response is improved and the good transient response can be obtained. Simulation results are presented and show the advantage of the proposed adaptive VSS with nonlinear switching surfaces.

Skin detection is used in many applications, such as face recognition, hand tracking, and human-computer interaction. There are many skin color detection algorithms that are used to extract human skin color regions that are based on the thresholding technique since it is simple and fast for computation. The efficiency of each color space depends on its robustness to the change in lighting and the ability to distinguish skin color pixels in images that have a complex background. For more accurate skin detection, we are proposing a new threshold based on RGB and YUV color spaces. The proposed approach starts by converting the RGB color space to the YUV color model. Then it separates the Y channel, which represents the intensity of the color model from the U and V channels to eliminate the effects of luminance. After that the threshold values are selected based on the testing of the boundary of skin colors with the help of the color histogram. Finally, the threshold was applied to the input image to extract skin parts. The detected skin regions were quantitatively compared to the actual skin parts in the input images to measure the accuracy and to compare the results of our threshold to the results of other's thresholds to prove the efficiency of our approach. The results of the experiment show that the proposed threshold is more robust in terms of dealing with the complex background and light conditions than others.

This paper presents a numerical investigation on propagation of hydrocarbon (ethylene-air mixture) detonation in a deformable copper tube. In this study, we deal with interactions of multi-materials, gas and solid. In gas phase, the model consists of the reactive compressible Navier-Stokes equations and one step chemical reaction. Also we use Inviscid Euler equations in solid. In order to the interface tracking and the determination of boundary values, our model handle level-set and ghost fluid method. Through the numerical simulation results, we identify generations of expansion waves and interferences by the wall deformation. In addition, we predict the minimum copper tube thickness that ensures safety under an incident detonation.

This research proposes a modeling and controller design of a three-level boost (TLB) converter for the implementation of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) in the photovoltaic power conditioning system (PCS). Contrary to the output voltage control of the conventional controller, the Photovoltaic PCS requires an input voltage controller for MPPT operation. A TLB converter has the advantage of decreasing the inductor size and increasing efficiency compared with the existing booster converter. However, an optimal controller is difficult to design due to the complexity of the TLB operations, which have two operational modes on the duty ratio boundary of 0.5. Therefore, the unified linear model equations of the TLB converters, which can be applicable to both operational modes, are derived using linearized solar cell expressions. Furthermore, the transfer functions are obtained for the controller design. The MPPT voltage controller is designed using MATLAB SISOTOOL. In addition, a controller for capacitor voltage unbalancing is described and designed. The simulations and experimental verifications are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the small-signal analysis and control system design.

This study presents results of analysis on fault-related landforms and the Quaternary fluvial landforms, which are important evidences for active faulting by identifying surface deformation, around the Ulsan Fault Zone. In addition, this study suggests lineament map and inferred active fault-line map based on analyzing linearity and continuity of these landforms and by compiling location information of existing active faults. We convince that quantitative tectonic-geomorphological analysis are an effective method for active faults tracking, in particular, considering the conditions of relatively low seismicity and surface ruptured-events in the Korean Peninsula compared to plate boundary active areas. However, research on active fault in South Korea is just an infant stage since the 1990s and requires accumulation of research achievements on development and application of various fault analysis techniques, analysing and standardizing linear structures.
A various technology of remote sensing and image analysis are applied to study landscape changes and their influencing factors in stream corridors. We developed a method to detect landscape changes over time by calculating the optical index using multispectral images taken from satellites at various time points, calculating the threshold to delineate the boundaries of water bodies, and creating binarized maps into land and water areas. This method was applied to the upstream reach of the weirs in the Geumgang River to track changes in the sandbar formed by the opening of the weir gate. First, we collected multispectral images with a resolution of 10 m × 10 m taken from the Sentinel-2 satellite at various times before and after the opening of the dam in the Geumgang River. The normalized difference water index (NDWI) was calculated using the green light and near-infrared bands from the collected images. The Otsu's threshold of NDWI calculated to delineate the boundary of the water body ranged from -0.0573 to 0.1367. The boundary of the water area determined by remote sensing matched the boundary in the actual image. A map binarized into water and land areas was created using NDWI and the Otsu's threshold. According to these results of the developed method, it was estimated that a total of 379.7 ha of new sandbar was formed by opening the three weir floodgates from 2017 to 2021 in the longitudinal range from Baekje Weir to Daecheong Dam on the Geumgang River. The landscape detection method developed in this study is evaluated as a useful method that can obtain objective results with few resources over a wide spatial and temporal range.
This study summarizes advantages and disadvantages of numerical methods and compares ELLAM and LEZOOMPC to develop an efficient numerical modeling technique on contaminant transport. Eulerian-Lagrangian method and Eulerian method are commonly used numerical techniques. However Eulerian-Lagrangian method does not conserve mass globally and fails to treat boundary in a straightforward manner. Also, Eulerian method has restrictions on the size of Courant number and mesh Peclet number because of time truncation error. ELLAM (Eulerian Lagrangian Localized Adjoint Method) which has been popularly used for past 10 years in numerical modeling, is known for overcoming these numerical problems of Eulerian-Lagrangian method and Eulerian method. However, this study investigates advantages and disadvantages of ELLAM and suggests a change for the better. To figure out the disadvantages of ELLAM, the results of ELLAM, LEZOOMPC (Lagrangian-Eulerian ZOOMing Peak and valley Capturing), and visual MODFLOW are compared for four examples having different mesh Peclet numbers. The result of ELLAM generates numerical oscillation at infinite of mesh Peclet number, but that of LEZOOMPC yields accurate simulations. The simulation results suggest that the numerical error of ELLAM could be alleviated by adopting some schemes in LEZOOMPC. In other words, the numerical model which combines ELLAM with backward particle tracking, forward particle tracking, adaptively local zooming, and peak/valley capturing of LEZOOMPC can be developed for not only overcoming the numerical error of ELLAM, but also keeping the numerical advantage of ELLAM.
