Investigation of Galling In Forming Galvanized Steel Sheet

  • The major purpose of the present study is to evaluate the performance of various galvanized (GI) or galvannealed (GA) mild steels and AHSS in stamping applications. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of selected stamping operations was conducted to estimate the critical pressure boundary conditions that exist in practice. Using this information, laboratory tribotests, e.g. Twist Compression (TCT), Deep Drawing (DDT) and Strip Drawing (SDT) Tests, were developed to evaluate the performance of selected lubricants and die materials/coatings in forming galvanized steels of interest. The sheet materials investigated included mild steels and AHSS (e.g. DP600 GI/GA, DP780 GI/GA, TRIP780 GA and DP980 GI/GA). Experimental results showed that galvanized material resulted in more galling, while galvannealed material showed more powdering and flaking. The surface roughness and chemical composition of galvanized sheet materials affected the severity of galling under the same testing conditions, i.e. lubricants and die materials/coatings. The results of this study helped to determine the critical interface pressure that initiates lubricant failure and galling in stamping selected galvanized sheet materials. Thus, to prevent or postpone the critical interface conditions, the results of this study can be used to select the optimum combination of galvanized sheet, die material, die coating and lubricant for forming structural automotive components.

Development of Friction Reduction Method between Piston Ring and Cylinder Liner (피스톤 링과 실린더 라이너에서의 마찰저감 기술개발)

  • The friction loss between piston rings and cylinder liner is due to the tension of the piston rings. Lubricant is usually supplied to reduce the friction. However, the sliding speed of the piston varies during the reciprocating cycle and is very low near TDC(Top Dead Center)/BDC(Bottom Dead Center), where the hydrodynamic lubrication cannot be sustained. Since the lubrication regime is shifted from the hydrodynamic to the boundary lubrication near TDC/BDC, wear particles are easily generated so that the friction loss becomes bigger and bigger due to the plowing effect of wear particles. In this study, for the purpose of reducing the friction loss, an undulated surface is adopted to the cylinder liner to trap wear particles. The friction force variations, which are measured by strain gaged, show that the concept of undulated surface is one of the promising methods to effectively reduce the friction between piston rings and cylinder liner.

An Analysis of the Static and Dynamic Characteristics of Infinite Width Tilting-Pad Journal Bearings in Consideration of Ram-Prssure (선단압력을 고려한 무한폭 틸팅-패드 저어널 베어링의 정특성 및 동특성 해석)

  • In this paper, the influence of ram-pressure on the static and dynamic characteristics of infinite width tilting-pad journal bearing is investigated theoretically. The ram-pressure is obtained by assumption of conservation of mechanical energy of the lubricant flow through the leading edge of the pad. The pressure in the lubricating film is numerically calculated using the ram-pressure obtained as the inlet pressure boundary condition of the pad. The static equilibrium state of tilting-pad journal bearing is determined by Newton-Raphson iteration method. A numerical results are presented in graphic form and relationships between the ram-pressure and the static and dynamic characteristics are discussed.

  • Morphological analysis of wear particles in the lubricating oil is a very effective and versatile means of lubricant analysis for machine condition monitoring and fault diagnosis. The prospects for determining quantitative information about wear particle morphology have been considerably enhanced by recent developments reported in the application of image processing and analysis techniques. This study was undertaken to investigate the influence of oiliness agent and extreme pressure agent on the shape of wear particles. The wear test was performed under different experimental conditions with stearic acid, dibenzyl disulfide(DBDS) and tricresol phosphate(TCP) in paraffinic base oil. Wear particles characteristics were described using four shape parameters, namely 50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity. The results showed that the four shape parameters of wear particles depend on a kind of the additives. This analysis of wear debris with computer image processing techniques is sufficient to distinguish some types of wear debris. The wear volume of three kinds of the specimens are affected by the additives with boundary films.

  • A software for design of turbine bearings has been developed based on both the theoretical analysis and experimental investigation. Static and dynamic performance, i.e. load capacity, frictional loss, temperature distribution, stiffness and damping coefficients, stability etc., can be obtained by using this software taking into account the effects of three dimensional variation of lubricant viscosity, turbulence and inlet pressure. A performance test rig was developed by self-design and technology, which was used to verify static and dynamic characteristics and to investigate the proper boundary conditions for theoretical analysis. Consequently HANJUNG has developed the self-design technology for design of turbine bearings for power plants.

Evaluation of Antiwear Performance of Mono/multilayer LB Molecular Films (단층/다층 LB 분자막의 내마멸 성능 평가)

  • The antiwear properties of amphiphilic monolayers and composite multilayer on silicon surface were investigated using micro­tribometer and Auger Electron Spectroscopy. Langmuir­Blodgett (LB) monolayers from behenic acid, 2,4­heneicosanedione(HD) and its lopper complex((HD)$_2$Cu) were fabricated on silicon surface and the composite multilayer of 5­bilayer of (HD)$_2$Cu was fabricated on the surface of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) self­assembled monolayer (SAM). We observed that LB monolayers and the composite multilayer exhibited a steady and excellent friction response when compared with the OTS SAM. These LB mono and multilayer also showed much higher wear­resistance than the OTS SAM.

  • Tribologicsl diagnostics as the ensemble of means and methods of continuous monitoring of the state of friction characteristics of moving junctions is playing an ever important part in the development of friction, lubrication, and wear theory end practice. The scheme presenting the main areas of tribological diagnostics is given in Fig. I. This growing part of TD is determined by the general tendency of modern technology, expressed in an attempt to organically combine the functions of measuring, evaluating,and predicting the parameters and characteristics of the processee taking place in the operating device. The logical result of this integration in future is the closed system correcting its operation in accordance with sn established program. Unfortunately, tribotechnicsl devices are still very far from such an ideal system at the present time. While in the friction assemblies with hydrodynamic lubrication it is possible in the first approximation to realize feed-backs in the lubricant circulation system with the aid of monitoring of the pressure, temperature and filtration, in the systems operating without lubrication and with boundary lubricetion even the process of selection of the diagnostic parameters has not been completed.

  • Wear and wear transition mechanisms during sliding as a function of time in Al2O3 have been studied to understand the wear behaviour of brittle ceramic materials. Commercial Si3N4 ball was rotated against flat Al2O3 specimens which were hot pressed and polished using upto 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diamond paste. Paraffin oil was used as a lubricant. Experimental data show that wear of Al2O3 is separated into distinct two stages, i.e., initial stage of slow wear and final stage of rapid wear. Microstructural observations at worn surface show that wear occurs through grooving and grain pull-out in the initial and final stage respectively. TEM observations beneath the worn surfaces show that grain pull-out starts to occur by the propagation of grain boundary cracks induced by dislocation pile-up throughthe surface.

The Stability of the Flexible Rotor Mounted on Circumferentially Grooved Floating Ring Journal Bearings (원주방향 급유홈 프로팅링 저널베어링으로 지지된 탄성 회전체의 안정성)

  • The stability of the flexible rotor mounted on circumferentially grooved floating ring journal bearings was investigated theoretically and experimentally. The floating ring journal bearing was analyzed by using JFO reformation boundary condition. The flexible shaft was analyzed by the finite element method based on Rayleigh beam theory. It was found that the measured ring speed agrees well with the theoretical results. The instability of the system due to not only the outer film but also the inner film of the bearing could be predicted by the theory which allows negative vapor pressure. The tendency that reducing the supply pressure of lubricant stabilizes the system was observed both experimentally and theoretically.
