In this paper, a fifth order numerical method is presented for solving singularly perturbed differential-difference equations with negative shift. In recent papers the term negative shift has been using for delay. Similar boundary value problems are associated with expected first exit time problem of the membrane, potential in models for neuron and in variational problems in control theory. In the numerical treatment for such type of boundary value problems, first we use Taylor approximation to tackle terms containing small shifts which converts it to a boundary value problem for singularly perturbed differential equation. The two point boundary value problem is transformed into general first order ordinary differential equation system. A discrete approximation of a fifth order compact difference scheme is presented for the first order system and is solved using the boundary conditions. Several numerical examples are solved and compared with exact solution. It is observed that present method approximates the exact solution very well.

A theoretical study for a forced uniform flow impinging on a rotating disk, typically involved in Chemical Vapor Deposition(CVD) and Vapor-phase Axial Deposition(VAD) processes, has been carried out. A set of exact solutions for flow and temperature fields are developed by employing a similarity variable obtained from force balance on a control volume near the disk. The solutions depend on the rotating speed of the disk, .omega., and the forced flow speed toward the disk, a. For constant forced flow speed, the overall boundary layer thickness decreases when the rotating speed increases. Approximately 5%, 15%, and 30% decreases of the thickness are obtained for .omega./a = 2, 5, and 10, respectively, compared to the case of .omega./a = 0 (axisymmetric stagnation point flow). For constant rotating disk speed the boundary layer thickness immediately decreases as the forced flow speed increases, compared to the case of .omega./a .rarw. .inf. (induced flow near a rotating disk). Effects of .omega. and a on heat transfer coefficient are studied and explained with the boundary layer characteristics.

The flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by interaction of a pair of vortices were studied experimentally. The test facility consisted of a boundary-layer wind tunnel with a vortex introduced into the flow by half-delta winglet protruding from the surface. In order to control the strength of the longitudinal vortices, the angles of attack of the vortex generators were varied from $\pm20\;degree\;to\;\pm45$ degree, but spacings between the vortex generators were fixed to 4 cm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity measurements were made using a five-hole pressure probe. Heat transfer measurements were made using the thermochromatic liquid to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. By using the method mentioned above, the following conclusions were obtained from the present experiment. The boundary layer was thinned in the regions where the secondary flow was directed toward the wall and thickened where it was directed away from the wall. The peak augmentation of the local heat transfer coefficient occurred in the downwash region near the point of minimum boundary-layer thickness.
The attitude aerodynamic control is an important subject in the design of an aerospace plane. Usually, at high altitudes, this control is fulfilled by thrusters so that the implementation of an aerodynamic control of the vehicle has the advantage of reducing the amount of thrusters fuel to be loaded on board. In the present paper, the efficiency of a wing-flap has been evaluated considering a NACA 0010 airfoil with a trailing edge flap of length equal to 35% of the chord. Computational tests have been carried out in hypersonic, rarefied flow by a direct simulation Monte Carlo code at the altitudes of 65 and 85 km, in the range of angle of attack 0-40 deg. and with flap deflection equal to 0, 15 and 30 deg.. Effects of the flap deflection have been quantified by the variations of the aerodynamic force and of the longitudinal moment. The shock wave-boundary layer interaction and the shock wave-shock wave interaction have been also considered. A possible interaction of the leading edge shock wave and of the shock wave arising from the vertex of the convex corner, produced on the lower surface of the airfoil when the flap is deflected, generates a shock wave whose intensity is stronger than those of the two interacting shock waves. This produces a consistent increment of pressure and heat flux on the lower surface of the flap, where a thermal protection system is required.

This paper describes the results of an experimental investigation of the flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by interaction of a pair of vortices. The test facility consists of a boundary-layer wind tunnel with a vortex introduced into the flow by half-delta wings(vortex generators) protruding from the surface. In order to control the strength of the two longitudinal vortices, the angles of attack of the vortex generators are varied from 20 degree to 45 degree, but spacings between the vortex generators are fixed to 4 cm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity downstream of the vortex generators is measured by a five-hole pressure probe, and the hue-capturing method using the thermochromatic liquid crystals has been used to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. By using the method mentioned above, the following conclusions are obtained from the present experiment. The boundary layer is thinned in the regions where the secondary flow is directed toward the wall and thickened where it is directed away from the wall. The peak augmentation of the local heat transfer coefficient occurs in the downwash region near the point of minimum boundary-layer thickness. Streamwise distributions of averaged Stanton number on the measurement planes show very similar trends for all the cases(${\beta}=20^{circ},\;30^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ}$).
In this paper, the variable structure model following control scheme is proposed for the nonlinear robot manipulator system. The proposed control system guarantees that the system state is in the sliding mode for all time. Therefore, error transient can be prescribed in advance for all time. Furthermore, overall system is globally exponentially stable. Chattering problem is reduced by the introduction of a boundary layer. Simulation results are given to show the usefulness of the proposed control scheme.

Active flow control, in the form of steady and unsteady momentum injection via jet blowing was studied. A jet was obtained by pressing a plenum inside the airfoil and ejecting flow out of a thin slot. The normal and drag forces were measured with leading edge or trailing edge blowing Jet and compared with the results obtained with no blowing. The blowing jet has been shown to improve the aerodynamic performance of the airfoil. The steady jet proved more effective than pulsating jet in these experimental conditions. Furthermore for the case of leading edge steady blowing jet, the alleviation of non-linearity in the normal force curve slope can be seen at higher angles of attack. No effective trailing edge jet was observed in this highly separated flow. This shows that the stall control is highly depends on the characteristics of the boundary layer near the jet slot.

The present paper deals with concept design of supersonic inlet based on compressible flow theory and flow control of bleeding in order to guarantee stability of supersonic inlet of ramjet engine in broad range of operating conditions. Shock instability, shock wave-boundary layer interaction and flow separation should be properly controlled to improve performance of the supersonic inlet. Considering shock strength, boundary layer and flow separation, the supersonic inlet is modified from the basic model which is designed under inviscid theory. Consequently, shock is stabilized, and required mass flow rate is obtained. Furthermore, bleeding is applied to the supersonic inlet to maintain performance in off-design conditions. Mass flow condition is adopted for modeling of bleeding effect, and performance of the supersonic inlet is evaluated by changing bleeding locations and numbers.
The purpose of this study is to identify and improve the performance of the adjacent room ventilation system in living room ventilation facilities, and compare and analyze the smoke control regulations of the NFPA code and the national fire safety standard (NFSC). The analysis method was fire dynamics simulation (FDS) and was used to analyze the, variations of the air supply amount, width of the boundary, change in indoor combustion and wind velocity of the incoming air. It was found to be advantageous to secure the clean layer when the amount of air supplied is less than the amount of discharged air in the fire room. However, in the supply room, it is more effective to secure the clean layer when the amount of supplied air is larger than the amount of discharged air, as a longer boundary width gives rise to better performance. In addition, it is necessary to consider the amount of air supplied and discharged as a function of the kind of flammable material. Moreover, decreasing the air inlet wind speed and amount of incoming air is advantageous for securing the clean layer of the fire room.

The oscillatory excitation with a Strouhal number of 2.65 ncar the stagnation zone of hemispherical nose model was employed to control the laminar separation bubble and the transition to turbulence. The effects of oscillatory excitation upon the separation bubble and the transition were addressed in terms of kurtosis/skewness and time-frequency analyses. The measured noise spectrum of radiated sound from the turbulent boundary layer on the axi-symmetric infinite cylinder is compared with that by Sevik's wave-number white approximations. The noise sources in TBL on axi-symmetric cylinder and the caling of their far-field sound are also discussed.
