Here we consider the evaluation of the the dynamic component of the second order force due to wave diffraction by a circular cylinder analytically and numerically. The cylinder is fixed, vertical, surface piercing in water of finite uniform depth. The formulation of the wave-structure interaction is based on the assumption of a homogeneous, ideal, incompressible, and inviscid fluid. The nonlinearity in the wave-structure interaction problem arises from the free surface boundary conditions, namely, dynamic and kinematic free surface boundary conditions. We expand the velocity potential and free surface elevation functions in terms of a small parameter and then consider the second order diffraction problem. After deriving the pressure using Bernoulli's equation, we obtain the analytical expression for the dynamic component of the second order force on the cylinder by integrating the pressure over the wetted surface. The computation of the dynamic force component requires only the first order velocity potential. Numerical results for the dynamic force component are presented.
Numerical wave tank is a robust tool by which the nonlinear interactions between the body and the free-surface can be treated in time-domain. In this paper, a two-dimensional numerical wave tank based on the Spectral/Boundary-Element Method is developed, and applied successfully to the study of nonlinear wave diffraction around a submerged circular cylinder. Particularly, it is shown that the high-order wave components of significant wave height are developed in the lee-side of the cylinder and that these waves result in a negative drift force on the circular cylider.

A numerical analysis of the wave characteristics of wave diffraction and the interference effects for a single cylinder and for two cylinders were carried out by the Boundary Element Method using constant elements. The Present investigation was limited to the diffraction of 2-dimensional linear waves by vertical impervious cylinders. Numerical model has been written to calculate the wave diffraction coefficient both on the boundary of the cylinders and at points away from it. The accuracy of the computational scheme was investigated by comparing the analytical results of the other reseraches. Good agreement was observed.
In this paper, the boundary element method is applied to solve the diffraction of waves by multiple vertical cylinders under the assumption of linear wave theory. A numerical analysis by boundary element method is based on Green's theorem and introduced to an integral equation for the fluid velocity potential around the cylinders. The numerical results obtained in this study are compared with the experimental data and the results of the theory using multiple scattering techniques. The comparisons show strong agreement. This numerical analysis method developed by using boundary element method could be used broadly for the design of various offshore structures to be constructed in coastal zones in the future.
The present study is to estimate the effect of wave height affecting at the front face of breakwater systems, when a submarine trench is dredged in the distant offshore from outer breakwater. The wave diffraction field, which is important hydraulic factor in the ocean, is considered to be two dimensional(2D) plane and the configuration of the submarine trench on the sea bed designated by single horizontal long-rectangular system. The numerical simulation is performed by using Green function based on the boundary integral equation and meshed at moving boundary conditions. The results of present numerical simulations are illustrated by applying the normal incidence. It is shown that the ratios of wave height reduction at the front face of breakwater systems are approximately 20% by the effect of placing long trench on the sea bed. This study can effectively be utilized for safety assessment to various breakwater systems in the ocean field.

A high-frequency analysis technique, called the hidden rays of diffraction (HRD), is reviewed in this paper. The physical optics and the rigorous diffraction coefficients of a perfectly conducting wedge illuminated by a plane wave are compared. The physical existence of hidden rays on the shadow boundary is explained in view of the geometric theory of diffraction (GTD). In particular, a systematic tracing of hidden rays and its visualization are precisely described by introducing the concept of the supplementary boundary. The physical meaning of the null-field condition in the complementary region is also explained.

In this study, a radiation and a diffraction problems of a floating body in two-layer fluids were solved by the Numerical Wave Tank(NWT) technique in the frequency domain. In two-layer fluids, two different wave modes exist and the hydrodynamic coefficients can be obtained separately for each mode. The two-domain Boundary Element Method(BEM) in the potential fluid using the whole-domain matrix scheme was used to investigate the characteristics of wave forces, added mass and damping coefficients. The effects of the ratio of density and water depth in the lower domain were also evaluated and compared with given references.
The present study is to investigate the effect of wave-structure interaction such as wave oscillation. The theoretical method is based upon the linear diffraction theory obtained by the boundary element method. The water depth and incident wave period in fluid region are assumed to be constant. To investigate the wave interaction due to offshore structures, the numerical program has been developed and the simulation has been carried out by varying the conditions of distance and width of offshore structures. This study can effectively be utilized for safety assessment to various breakwater systems and layout of offshore breakwater in the ocean and coastal field. It can give information for the safety to construct offshore structure and revetment in coastal region.

A two-dimensional numerical model based on the finite element method was built to simulate the wave propagation phenomena that occur during the ultrasonic time of flight diffraction (TOFD) process. First, longitudinal-wave TOFD was simulated, and the numerical results agreed well with the theoretical results. Shear-wave TOFD was also investigated because shear waves have higher intensity and resolution. The shear wave propagation was studied using three models with different boundary conditions, and the tip-diffracted shear-to-longitudinal wave was extracted from the A-scan signal difference between the cracked and non-cracked specimens. This signal showed very good agreement between the geometrical and numerical arrival times. The results of this study not only provide better understanding of the diffraction phenomena in TOFD, but also prove the potential of shear-wave TOFD for practical application.
The diffraction of waves by three bottom fixed vertical circular cylinders is investigated by using the boundary element method. This method has been successfully applied to the isolated vertical circular cylinder and now is used to study the interaction between waves and multiple vertical cylinders. In this paper, a numerical analysis by the boundary element method is developed by the linear potential theory. The numerical analysis by the boundary element method is based on Green's second theorem and introduced to an integral equation for the fluid velocity potential around the vertical circular cylinders. To verify this method, the results obtained in present study are compared with the results computed by the multiple scattering method. The results of the comparisons show strong agreement. Also in this paper, several numerical examples are given to illustrate the effects of various parameters on the wave exciting force such are the separation distance, the wave number and the incident wave angle. This numerical computation method might be used broadly for the design of various offshore structures to be constructed in the future.
