  • Structural stability and shock absorption are important properties for corrugated board. In order to maintain structural stability, adhesive properties between top/bottom liners and corrugated medium are not only essential but also important for productivity and product quality. Borax has been an essential ingredient in corrugating adhesive solution. Borax increases viscosity, bonding between starchs and green adhesive bond. The objective of this research is to improving adhesive strength and viscosity stability by adding cross-linking agent instead of borax. Rheology and penetration of main starch gelatinization slurry were affected by borax addition level. Borax increased viscosity and decreased viscosity stability, while cross-linking additives increased viscosity stability and adhesive strength by anchoring effect.

  • Damaged liners may be detected by using leakage detection systems. For the reason, many types of leakage detection systems are applied to analyze or detect damages of lining system such as electrical detection method for the landfill sites. However, most of them can be applied in the new landfill construction sites because sensors should be installed in the bottom of liner systems. This paper shows a case study reviewing the development of a fence type leakage detection method, monitoring system and pilot plant test results, so that they can be economically and efficiently applied to actual used or in-use sites without a leakage detection system.

  • Various geosynthetics used as liners or protection layers are installed in the solid waste landfills. The interface shear strength between geosynthetics installed at the slope of the landfill is a very important variable for the safe design of the bottom and cover systems in the solid waste landfills. The interface shear strength between Geomembrane and Geotexile is estimated by a large direct shear test in this study, The effects of normal stress, water existing between geosynthetics and surface condition of Geomembrae, i.e. smooth or textured, were investigated. The test results show that the effect varied depending on the level of normal stress and the type of geosynthetic combinations. The shear strength was evaluated by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion in this research. The shear strength parameters obtained from tests considering the site specific conditions such as normal stress, dry or wet, and surface condition of geosynthetic should be applied to the design of geosynthetics installed at the slope of the landfill to construct a safe solid waste landfill.
