Role of Liquid Biopsies in Colorectal Cancer (대장암에서 액체 생검의 역할)

  • In recent years, liquid biopsy has received immense attention. Liquid biopsy is a minimally invasive method used for obtaining biological fluids including urine, pleural fluid and, mostly, peripheral blood. Liquid biopsy involves various targets including circulating tumors cells (CTCs), circulating cell-free tumor DNA (ctDNA), and microRNA (miRNA). Colorectal cancer (CRC), like other solid tumors, shed tumor cells into the bloodstream. Analysis of these CTCs, as well as ctDNA is the primary objective of the liquid biopsy. Evaluation of CTC or ctDNA offers information about early tumor release, development of tumor metastasis and also about mechanisms involved in tumor resistance to treatment.

Nutrient Components and Physicochemical Properties of New Domestic Potato Cultivars (국내산 신품종 감자의 영양성분 및 이화학적 특성)

  • This study examined the nutrient components and physicochemical properties of three new potato cultivars: Gui Valley, Bora Valley, and Gogu Valley, which were acquired from PotatoValley Ltd., and compared them to the Superior cultivar that is widely distributed in food markets. Amino acid, fatty acid, and mineral compositions, as well as total starch, reducing sugar, dietary fiber, vitamin C, and phenolic acid contents were measured. The gelatinization and pasting properties of the potatoes were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and a rapid visco analyzer (RVA). The three new potato cultivars showed differences for various characteristics compared to the existing Superior cultivar. The Gui valley cultivar has a high potential for processing into items such as French fries or chips, due to its high starch content and low reducing sugar content. Bora valley showed an incredibly high phenolic acid contents, and Gogu valley contained high levels of dietary fiber, minerals, vitamin C, and essential amino acids. Overall, these cultivars are expected to be highly valuable items for develpment and applications of functional food.

Signal crosstalk between estrogen and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α on adiposity

  • Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor $\alpha$ and estrogen are believed to be involved in metabolic changes leading to obesity. To test this relationship, we divided female wildtype and PPAR$\alpha$-deficient mice fed on a high fat diet into the following groups: mock-operated, ovariectomized (OVX), and $E_2$-treated. The visceral white adipose tissue and plasma cholesterol levels were increased significantly in wild type OVX and decreased in the $E_2$-treated group, but interestingly not in PPAR$\alpha$-deficient mice. The mRNA levels of lipoprotein lipase in adipose tissue were also increased in only wild type OVX and decreased significantly in $E_2$-treated mice. These novel results suggest the possibility of signaling crosstalk between PPAR$\alpha$ and $E_2$, causing obesity in vivo.

  • Since the wireless smart card has played a main role in the identification security application for the building access; this research has its purpose to improve the performance of the smart card system and aims to offer more convenient to user. The contactless cards do not require insertion into a card reader and can work up to centimeters away from the reading device. To be able to cope with this performance the controlling of power consumption through the adaptive modulation and error control is needed. This paper addresses a forward error control (FEC) scheme with the adaptive Reed-Solomon code rate and an M-ary frequency shift keying (M-FSK) modulation scheme with the varying symbol size M over the link. The result of comparing energy efficiencies of adaptive error correction and adaptive modulation to other various static schemes shows to save over 50% of the energy consumption.

The Influential Factors Related to Organizational Citizenship Behavior of Nurses: With Focus on Authentic Leadership and Organizational Justice (간호사의 조직시민행동 관련 영향요인: 진성리더십과 조직공정성을 중심으로)

  • Purpose: This study was done to determine the influential factors related to organizational citizenship behavior of nurses with a focus on authentic leadership and organizational justice. Methods: The study participants were 186 nurses who work at K University Hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. Data were collected in September and October, 2013. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection and data were analyzed using the SPSS/Window program. Results: The factor most influential for organizational citizenship behavior was authentic leadership (${\beta}$=.371, p<.001), followed by organizational justice (${\beta}$=.221, p=.005), and marital status (${\beta}$=.142, p=.023). These factors accounted for 30.7% of the variance in organizational citizenship behavior. Conclusion: In order to enhance organizational citizenship behavior of nurses, strategies for human resource management, which improve the perception of head nurses' authentic leadership and organizational justice, are required.

Dielectric Study of Allyl Chloride with 2-Pentanone and 2-Hexanone in Microwave Frequency Range

  • Dielectric measurement on binary mixtures of Allyl chloride (ALC) with 2-Pentanone (2-PE) and 2-Hexanone (2-HE) has been carried out over the entire concentration range using Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technique at various temperatures in microwave frequency range of 10 MHz to 10 GHz. The static dielectric constant, excess static dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}^E_S$), effective Kirkwood correlation factor ($g^{eff}$) of binary mixtures over entire concentration range were determined to study the effect of increasing alkyl group of ketones on hetero molecular interaction. It was found that magnitude of excess static dielectric constant of mixtures increases with increase of alky group of ketones. The study reveals that the dipole moment of Allyl chloride in mixture have antiparallelism tendency where as 2-pentanone and 2-hexanone have parallelism tendency. Excess static dielectric constant is also fitted to Redlich-Kister equation to get information about rates of multimers formation.

Prognostic Significance of Expression of CD133 and Ki-67 in Gastric Cancer

  • CD133 is one of the most important stem cell markers in solid cancers and Ki-67 is a marker that reflects cell proliferation. The relationships between the expression of CD133 and Ki-67 and prognosis in gastric carcinoma are unknown and need exploring. We examined 50 gastric cancer patients retrospectively in the Radiation Oncology Department of the Faculty of Medicine, Gazi University. CD133 and Ki-67 expression was examined using immunohistochemical staining. The survival rate in patients with CD133 positive expression was significantly worse than that in the patients with negative expression (p=0.04). Expression of CD133 had a positive correlation with that of Ki-67 (r=0.350; p=0.014). Multivariate analysis revealed that the expression of CD133 was an independent prognostic factor in gastric cancer (p=0.02). Conclusion, expression of CD133 may be a useful prognostic marker in gastric cancer.

The Systematic Discussion of a Study on the Application of Computerized Cognitive Rehabilitation on Patient with Dementia in Korea (국내 치매 환자를 대상으로 한 전산화 인지 재활 적용 연구에 대한 체계적 고찰)

  • Purpose : This study aimed to investigate a study on the intervention of computerized cognitive rehabilitation applied to patients with dementia in Korea. Thus, a systematic discussion was conducted. Methods : Studies from January 2000 to December 2016 were searched in the Korea Education and Research Information Service. The main key words used were: "dementia," "computerized cognitive rehabilitation," "computerized cognitive training," "computer assisted cognitive therapy," and "computerized cognitive therapy." Result : A total of five studies were selected. The effects of the computerized cognitive rehabilitation therapy applied to patients with dementia resulted in improved cognitive functions, as well as daily living and activities instrumental to daily living. There was also an increase in brain activity. The qualitative aspects of this study showed a low level of internal and external validities due to the small number of subjects, short period of intervention, and limited study environment. Conclusion : In the future, it is necessary to continue a study in which the level of evidence is high to determine whether various cognitive rehabilitation programs are effectively applied to patients with dementia.

Effect of Analytical Parameters of Gel Permeation Chromatography on Molecular Weight Measurements of Urea-Formaldehyde Resins

  • As the molecular weight (MW) of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins had a great impact on their properties, this work was conducted to study effect of analytical parameters of gel permeation chromatography (GPC) on the MW measurement of UF resins. GPC parameters such as flow rate, column, detector temperature, and sample injection temperature were selected to compare number-average molecular weight (Mn), weight-average molecular weight (Mw), molecular weight distribution (MWD) and polydispersity index (PDI) of two UF resins with different viscosities. As expected, UF resin with higher viscosity resulted in greater Mn and Mw than those of low viscosity UF resin. When the flow rate increased, both Mn and Mw of UF resins decreased and MWD became narrower. By contrast, both Mn and Mw increased and MWD became wide when the column, detector, and sample injection temperature increased. The column, detector, and sample injection temperature of $50^{\circ}C$ at a flow rate of $0.5m{\ell}/min$ resulted in the highest MW and broadest MWD for the GPC analysis. These results suggest that the apparent molecular size or a hydrodynamic radius of UF resin molecules dissolved in the mobile phase affect to Mn, Mw and MWD.

Ultra-Clean Patterned Transfer of Single-Layer Graphene by Recyclable Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Films

  • We report an ultraclean, cost-effective, and easily scalable method of transferring and patterning large-area graphene using pressure sensitive adhesive films (PSAFs) at room temperature. This simple transfer is enabled by the difference in wettability and adhesion energy of graphene with respect to PSAF and a target substrate. The PSAF transferred graphene is found to be free from residues, and shows excellent charge carrier mobility as high as ${\sim}17,700cm^2/V{\cdot}s$ with less doping compared to the graphene transferred by thermal release tape (TRT) or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as well as good uniformity over large areas. In addition, the sheet resistance of graphene transferred by recycled PSAF does not change considerably up to 4 times, which would be advantageous for more cost-effective and environmentally friendly production of large-area graphene films for practical applications.
