Experimental investigation of organic fouling mitigation in membrane filtration and removal by magnetic iron oxide particles

  • Here magnetic iron oxide particles (MIOPs) were synthesized under atmospheric air and which size was controlled by regulating the flow rate of alkali addition and used for efficient removal of bovine serum albumin (BSA) from water. The MIOPs were characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transformation-Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results revealed a successful preparation of the MIOPs. The removal efficiency for BSA using MIOPs was found to be about 100% at lower concentrations (≥ 10 mg/L). The maximum adsorption of 64.7 mg/g for BSA was achieved as per the Langmuir adsorption model. In addition, microfiltration membrane for removal of BSA as model protein organic foulant is also studied. The effect of various MIOPs adsorbent sizes of 210, 680 and 1130 nm on the absorption capacity of BSA was investigated. Water permeability of the BSA integrated with the smallest size MIOPs membrane was increased by approximately 22% compared by the neat BSA membrane during dead-end filtration. Furthermore, the presence of small size MIOPs were also effective in increasing the permeate flux.

A Study of Research on Related Driving Rehabilitation (운전재활과 관련된 연구에 관한 고찰)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to grasp the general status and trend of the driving rehabilitation research focusing on interested topics, study subjects, therapeutic approaches, study designs, etc. Methods : It targeted 18 papers published in the RISS (Research Information Service System) from 2000 to 2014, and performed a descriptive statistical analysis by classifying these papers to topics, study subjects, study forms, study designs, study fields, and researchers. Results : As a result of the analysis, for the study form in the driving rehabilitation field, the rate of experimental papers was 61.1%, the highest. Major study subjects turned out to be occupational therapists, the disabled, and the aged, in order. For the study quality and design, the rate of survey and non randomized-single experimental study, which correspond to stage IV, was the highest, and the general study quality was found to be low. For the study field, the rates of the roles and recognition of occupational therapists, evaluation on driving ability of the disabled, and institutional improvement and future measures were the highest, each of which being 16.7%. Conclusion : Through this study, major study subjects and study quality in the driving rehabilitation field could be grasped, and it could be found that for development of the driving rehabilitation field, higher quality researches on more various study subjects would be needed in the future.

Hesperidin Suppresses Melanosome Transport by Blocking the Interaction of Rab27A-Melanophilin

  • We investigated the inhibitory effects of hesperidin on melanogenesis. To find melanosome transport inhibitor from natural products, we collected the structural information of natural products from Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) and performed pharmacophore-based in silico screening for Rab27A and melanophilin (MLPH). Hesperidin did not inhibit melanin production in B16F10 murine melanoma cells stimulated with ${\alpha}$-melanocyte stimulating hormone (${\alpha}$-MSH), and also did not affect the catalytic activity of tyrosinase. But, hesperidin inhibited melanosome transport in melanocyte and showed skin lightening effect in pigmented reconstructed epidermis model. Therefore, we suggest that hesperidin is a useful inhibitor of melanosome transport and it might be applied to whitening agent.

Effect of Plant Based Essential Oil on Immune Response of Silkworm, Antheraea assama Westwood (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae)

  • Botanicals have been regarded as sustainable solution of pest control because of their nominal effect on nontarget pest, biodegradability and other environment friendly properties. However, study on impact of botanicals against beneficial insects is less. In this investigation effort has been made to study the effect of essential oils of Ocimum sanctum, Ocimum gratissimum and Ageratum conyzoides against non-mulberry silkworm Antheraea assama in terms of percent mortality, total haemocyte count (THC) and phenol oxidase (PO) enzyme activity. After application of essential oil of the plants by contact residual film technique, age dependent decrease of percent mortality was recorded. Topical treatment of oil at higher dosages ($1{\mu}lg^{-1}$ and $0.5{\mu}lg^{-1}$) caused 100% mortality of late instar larvae at 24 hour but the lowest dose ($0.25{\mu}lg^{-1}$) did not cause any mortality till 48 hour of treatment. Initial increase of total haemocyte count (THC) was recorded at early hours of treatment (0.25 hour) at all dosages (1, 0.5, $0.25{\mu}lg^{-1}$) after topical treatment. A dose dependent increase was observed in phenol oxidase enzyme activity and this might indicate ability of the essential oils to cause induction of immune response in Antheraea assama larvae.

  • Even though the origin and nature of nocturnal paroxysmal dystonia (NPD) remains unclear, it has been considered as a manifestation of the nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy. We report a 17-year-old man with abnormal stereotyped movement during sleep. Video-EEG monitoring, ictal SPECT and night polysomnography did not show any evidence of epilepsy. However, the partial response to large dose of carbamazepine and the scoring according to the frontal lobe epilepsy and parasomnias (FLEP) scale suggest his events could be classified as epilepsy. Therefore we think the FLEP scale might be a useful tool for differential diagnosis in a patient presenting NPD.

An Analysis of the Digital Library Research Trends in Korea (국내 디지털 도서관 연구 동향 분석)

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the research trends on the digital libraries in Korea. To achieve this objective, a total of 578 author-assigned English keywords were collected from the 272 major LIS journal articles published in Korea during last ten years-period, i.e., 2007-2016. The collected data were analyzed using NetMiner V.4 to discover their 'degree centrality' and 'betweenness centrality'. As the results, 'Academic Library', 'Reference Service', 'Public Library', 'E Resource', and 'E Book' showed the most frequently conducted research topics, and 'Academic Library', 'Reference Service', 'Information Behavior', and 'E Resource' were the most influencing research topics. Finally, 'Academic Library', 'Metadata', 'Information Behavior', 'E Resource', and 'Librarian' seemed the most widely intervening research topics in this research.

A New method for the Calculation of Leakage Reactance in Power Transformers

  • Transformers are one of the most precious elements of the electric power system. Stability and reliability of the electric power network mainly depend on the working of the transformer. Leakage reactance of the transformer is one of the important factors and accurate calculation of the leakage reactance is necessary for the transformer designers and electric distributors. Leakage reactance of the transformer depends on the geometry of the transformer. There are many different methods for the calculations of the leakage reactance however mostly are usable when the axial heights of the high voltage and low voltage windings are equal. When the axial heights of high voltage and low voltage windings are asymmetric most of the analytical methods are not reliable. In this study, a new analytical method is introduced for the calculation of the leakage reactance. Fourteen different transformers are investigated in this study and four of them are presented in this paper. The results of the new analytical method are compared with the experimental results. Other analytical and numerical methods are also compared with this new method. Results show that this method is more reliable and accurate as compared to the other analytical methods. The maximum relative error between short-circuit test and proposed method for these fourteen transformers was less than 2.8%.

  • 최근 Full-HD TV, UHDTV의 보급에 따라 고화질 영상에 대한 수요가 증가하고 있으며 N-Screen 서비스의 확장으로 고화질 영상을 빠르게 전송하는 문제의 중요성은 더욱 커지고 있다. 고화질 영상을 빠르게 전송하기 위해서는 압축 효율의 향상이 필요한데, 일반적으로 영상에 잡음이 많을 때에는 압축 효율이 떨어진다. 본 논문에서는 다양한 원인의 잡음들 중에 film grain noise에 초점을 맞추어 이를 조절하여 영상압축의 효율을 높이는 방법을 연구한다. film grain은 영화촬영 방법 및 환경 등에 따라 강도가 달라지기도 하지만 필름으로 촬영한 모든 영화에서 쉽게 관찰할 수 있으며 앞으로도 계속 포함이 될 것으로 예상되고, 디지털 영화의 경우에도 저조도에서는 이와 비슷한 특성의 잡음이 발생한다. 재안하는 방법에서는 film grain이 포함된 영상에서 grain을 추출/제거한 영상을 압축하며 추출한 film grain에서 작은 영역을 선택하여 sample grain을 만든 후 별도로 압축한다. 디코더에서 grain을 없앤 영상만을 보여줄 수 있지만, 경우에 따라 grain이 없으면 심미적으로 오히려 좋지 않은 결과가 보이기도 한다. 따라서 압축을 푼 후에는 sample grain에서 원본 영상 크기의 grain을 합성한 후 grain을 제거한 영상과 더하여 grain이 포함된 영상을 재 생성한다. 실험한 결과 원본과 유사한 grain이 생성되면서 압축효율이 향상됨을 확인할 수 있다.

  • This study conducted semiotic analysis of drama . Based on Paradigm, Syntagm concept, I apprehended the characteristics of descriptive structure of drama, characters and contemplated on ideology reflected in the drama. As a result, it has approaching method of Critical Pluralism which strongly exposes resistance ideology. The drama intensified Classical Ideology such as gender role, hero, and family ideology, also it consists of Humane Introspection Ideology such as self-understanding, mutual-understanding, and self-serving bias.

  • The characteristic of mutant has long history, which is shown in various science fictions. There are different types and characters like Satyrs from Ancient Greek to superheroes in present. In fact, however, mutant as a cultural content has not been discussed sufficiently in Korea, even if related analyses were required indeed. In the thesis the characteristic and types of 'Homo Mutant' will be introduced and analyzed in many aspects and look for the reason why 'Homo Mutant' can be revealed and apply for further possibilities.
