  • The present work is concerned with a numerical investigation of the behaviour of reinforced-concrete beams with non-bonded flexural tension reinforcement. The numerically-established behaviour of such beams with and without transverse reinforcement is compared with its counterpart of similar beams with bonded reinforcement. From the comparison, it is found that the development of bond anywhere within the shear span inevitably leads to inclined cracking which is the cause of 'shear' failure. On the other hand, the lack of bond within the shear span of the beams is found, not only to prevent cracking within the shear span, but, also, to lead to a flexural type of failure preceded by the formation of horizontal splitting of concrete in the compressive zone. It is also found that delaying the extension of horizontal splitting through the provision of transverse reinforcement in the beam mid span can lead to flexural failure after yielding of the tension reinforcement. Yielding of the tension reinforcement before the horizontal splitting of the compressive zone may also be achieved by reducing the amount of the latter reinforcement.

  • The present experimental study addresses the structural response of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened in shear. Thirteen RC beams were divided into four different sets to investigate the effect of transverse and longitudinal steel reinforcement ratios, concrete compressive strength change and orientation for installing carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates. Then, we employed a shear strengthening solution through externally bonded reinforcement in grooves (EBRIG) and externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) techniques. In this regard, rectangular beams of $200{\times}300{\times}2000mm$ dimensions were subjected to the 4-point static loading condition and their load-displacement curves, load-carrying capacity and ductility changes were compared. The results revealed that using EBRIG method, the gain percentage augmented with the increase in the longitudinal reinforcement ratio. Also, in the RC beams with stirrups, the gain in shear strength decreased as transverse reinforcement ratio increased. The results also revealed that the shear resistance obtained by the experimental tests were in acceptable agreement with the design equations. Besides, the results of this research indicated that using the EBRIG system through vertical grooves in RC beams with and without stirrups caused the energy absorption to increase about 85% and 97%, respectively, relative to the control.

  • Following previous work carried out in Building Research Institute in Japan, finite element analyses of conceptual column designs are performed in this paper. The effectiveness of the numerical model is evaluated by experimental tests and parametric studies are conducted to determine influential factors in conceptual column designs. First, three different column designs are analysed: bonded, un-bonded, and un-bonded with additional reinforcing bars. The load-displacement curves and cracking patterns in concrete are obtained and compared with experimental ones. The comparisons indicate that the finite element model is able to reflect the experimental results closely. Both numerical and experimental results show that, the introduction of un-bonded zones in a column end can reduce cracking strains, accordingly reduce the stiffness and strength as well; the addition of extra reinforcement in the un-bonded zones can offset the losses of the stiffness and strength. To decide the proper length of the un-bonded zones and the sufficient amount of the additional reinforcing bars, parametric studies are carried out on their influences. It has been found that the stiffness of un-bonded designs slightly decreases with increasing the length of the un-bonded zones and increases with the size of the additional reinforcing bars.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relations between unbonded tendon stress and its influential parameters, i.e. bonded reinforcement ratio, span/depth ratio, and loading type. To this end, the influence of such parameters was examined with twenty eight test results of previous studies. Afterwards, an experimental study was carried out with twenty one test specimens. The investigation of previous and current experiments revealed the followings; (1) The bonded reinforcement ratio and prestressing ratio were proved to be important variables on the unbonded tendon stress. (2) The ratio of span to depth and the type of loading affected the unbonded tendon stress partially although their effects varied with bonded reinforcement ratio. (3) AASHTO LRFD Code and Moon/Lim's design equations predicted the experimental results well with the safety margin.

  • Ten beams bonded with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) laminates were tested under cyclic loading with the load range and the FRP reinforcement ratio as test parameters. The maximum load level during cyclic loading was 55%, 65% and 75% of the static flexural strength while the minimum load level was kept constant at 35%. Deflections of the beams at the end of 525000 cycles were found to increase by 16% and 44% when the maximum load level was increased from 55% to 65% and 75% of the static flexural strength, respectively. Beams with FRP reinforcement ratios of 0.64% and 1.28% were found to exhibit lesser deflections of about 15% and 20%, respectively, compared to a similar beam without FRP reinforcement. An analytical approach based on cycle-dependent effective moduli of elasticity of concrete and FRP reinforcement is presented and found to predict the deflections of the test beams well.

  • The flexural behavior of a strengthened beam that is a reinforced concrete beam with externally bonded carbon fiber sheets, is theoretically and experimentally investigated. A rectangular beam having a width of 20cm depth of 30cm and effective depth of 25cm is chosen. In order to have a variety of beams analyzed, three reinforcement ratios are chosen for the analysis: 1)$\frac{1}{2}$$\rho$$_{max}$, which is the most suitable reinforcement ratio for deflection consideration and the highest reinforcement ratio for practical designing beams as well; 2)$\rho$$_{max}$, which is the lowest reinforcement ratio for design purposes; and 3)the reinforcement ratio halfway from 1) and 2). Carbon fiber sheets with width of 15cm are externally bonded at the bottom fiber of the beam. The effect of the amount of carbon fiber sheets varying from 1 to 4 plies on the flexural capacity of the strengthened beam are also examined. Yield loads, ultimate loads, and flexural rigidities of the strengthened beam from the experimental results are composed with theoretical ones.nes.

  • Economical use of larix (larch) boards (grade 3) in industries is lower than that of imported hardwood; thus, studies have been conducted toward performance improvement of larix boards. Herein, flexural modulus of larix board samples laminated with wood adhesives polyurethane resins, poly (vinyl acetate) resins, phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde resins, melamine-formaldehyde resins, and urea-formaldehyde resins was compared with that of the samples bonded with adhesives reinforced with mesh-type basalt fibers. Moreover, the flexural moduli of the laminated samples bonded by mesh-type basalt fibers were compared with those of reinforced samples. The results showed that boards laminated with polyurethane and urea-formaldehyde resin adhesives had higher flexural modulus than those without the lamination. In particular, the increase in the flexural modulus was relatively significant for the 2- and 3-ply board structures laminated with polyurethane adhesives compared to those with reinforcement. The 3-ply board structure without reinforcement had the highest flexural modulus when the urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive was used.

  • Recently, the external prestressed concrete structures are increasingly being built. The mechanical behavior of prestressed concrete beams with external tendon is different from that of normal bonded PSC beams in that the increment of tendon stress was derived by whole member behavior. By this reason, the ultimate stress of external tendon is smaller than that of bonded tendon or internal unbonded tendon. The purposes of the present paper are therefore to improve the mechanical behavior of external unbonded tendon by using partially bonded external tendon and to evaluate the flexural behavior of partially bonded external tendon by the flexural member experiment. From the experimental results, before flexural cracking, there was no difference between external unbonded, partially bonded and bonded tendons. However, after cracking, yielding load of reinforcement, ultimate load, and tendon stress were increased in the sequence of external unbonded, partially bonded and bonded tendon members. The equation of ACI-318 and AASHTO 1994 were not matched with test results and had no correlations. So the newly proposed equation will be needed including the consideration of tendon profile, tendon bonded type, and so on. The proposed partially bonded external tendon in this paper will be a effective basis for the evaluation of external tendons in construction and design.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the structural behavior of reinforced concrete columns rehabilitated with epoxy-bonded steel plates subjected to axial load. Eleven specimens were made to evaluate structural capacity of reinforced concrete columns rehabilitated with steel plates. This study considers the change of the internal force and the deformation of reinforced concrete column with reinforcing steel plates, and analyzes the effect of the improvement of strength and ductility. Based on the test results, this study brings the following conclusions. In case of the effect of reinforcement by the ratio of the same volume, the internal force for the test model, which the width of the reinforcing steel plate is small, is effectively higher. The smaller the width and the thickness of reinforcing steel plate, the more effective the effect of reinforcement is. For applying the theorical equation by Uzumeri, the maximum load and the coefficient of effective crossing reinforcement by the width and the thickness of steel plate reflected the properties of reinforcing steel plate.

  • For the Externally bonded FRP systems, flexural design method is studied focusing on the reinforcement layer of the carbon fiber sheets. As the FRP layer is added, strengthening rate increases, but not proportionally as the FRP layer increases. This is reflected in the design formula appropriately by the bond cofficients from the added layers. As the number of FRP layer increases, the stress reinforcement and FRP sheet decreases, and it generally corresponds to the decrease rate of member flexural strength. This phenomenon is appearing indentically in a design formula and experimental result. The rate of $M_{test}$ and $M_n$ is 1.19 and it is estimated as safety factor which is the reduction factor, ${\psi}_f = 0.85$.
