Many authors have established the usefulness of concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) sections as compression members while few have proved their utility as flexural members. To explore their prospective as part of CFST frame structures, two types of connections using extended end plate and seat angle are proposed for exterior joints of CFST beams and CFST columns. To investigate the performance and failure modes of the proposed bolted connections subjected to static loads, an experimental program has been executed involving ten specimens of exterior beam-to-column joints subjected to monotonically increasing load applied at the tip of beam, the performance is appraised in terms of load deformation behaviour of joints. The test parameters varied are the beam section type, type and diameter of bolts. To validate the experimental behaviour of the proposed connections in CFST beam-column joints, finite element analysis for the applied load has been performed using software ATENA-3D and the results of the proposed models are compared with experimental results. The experimental results obtained agree that the proposed CFST beam-column connections perform in a semi-rigid and partial strength mode as per specification of EC3.
For the study of the fatigue behavior, high-strength bolted connections on a small scale were manufactured, and carried on fatigue tests. Its experimental values were analysed by stress-fatigue life (S-N) curve. Three types of specimens : the base metal, the cireular hole and the welded sperimens had same net section were made. Through the same tests those experimental values were compared with those of the high-strength bolted conneetions. The results of these studies are as followings. It was found that the fatigue strength in $F_{n=100,000}$ and $F_{n=2,000,000}$ of the high-strength bolted conneetions were much more about 14% and 16% than that of the base metal specimen. It was thought that this trend was due to frictional force increasing fatigue strength. It was known that fatigue strength in $F_{n=100,000}$ and $F_{n=2,000,000}$ of the welded joints were less 29% and 21% than that of base metal specimen. It was thought that that trend was due to weld flaw. It was appeared that the fatigue strength in $F_{n=100,000}$ and $F_{n=2,000,000}$ of the high-strength bolted connections were much more about 38% and 30% than that of welded joint. It was thought that it was due to both frictional force increasing the fatigue strength in bolted connections and weld flaw decreasing the fatigue strength in welded connections. It was found that the fatigue strength in $F_{n=100,000}$ and $F_{n=2,000,000}$ of the B3 specimens were much more 2% and -2% than that of the B4 specimen. It was thought that that trend was due to the frictional force, which concerned with shape of specimen. It was known that the fatigue strength in $F_{n=100,000}$ and $F_{n=2,000,000}$ of the specimen with circular hole was less 61% and 65% than that of base metal. It was known that the allowable stress for bolted joint was higher than that of welded Joints. If that research is continued and more data are accumulated it can be expected that a basic pattern to provided the indicator of the fatigue design of the bolted connections of steel structures and persume the safety and lifeproof of existing structures is given.

A design optimization is performed for the double-bolted joint in cylindrical composite structures by using a simplified analytical method. This method uses failure criteria for the major failure modes of the bolted composite joint. For the double-bolted joint with a zigzag arrangement, it is necessary to consider an interaction effect between the bolt arrays. This paper proposes another failure mode which is determined by angle and distance between two bolts in different arrays and define a failure criterion for the failure mode. The optimal design for the double-bolted joint is carried out by considering the interactive net-tension failure mode. The genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted to determine the optimized parameters; bolt spacing, edge distance, and stacking sequence of the composite laminate. A purpose of the design optimization is to maximize the burst pressure of the cylindrical structures by ensuring structural integrity. Also, a progressive failure analysis (PFA) is performed to verify the results of the optimal design for the double-bolted joint. In PFA, Hashin 3D failure criterion is used to determine the ply that would fail. A stiffness reduction model is then used to reduce the stiffness of the failed ply for the corresponding failure mode.
Bolted connections are used commonly in the precast reinforced concrete structures. In such structures, to perform structural analysis, behaviour of connections must be determined. In this study, elastic rotation stiffness of semi-rigid bolted beam connections, applied in industrial precast structures, are determined by finite element methods. The results obtained from numerical solutions are compared with an experimental study carried out for the same connections. Furthermore, stress distributions of the connection zone are determined and a reinforcement scheme is proposed. Thus, a more appropriate reinforcement arrangement for the connection zone is enabled. The connection joint of the prefabricated frame is described as rigid, hinged or elastic, and a static analysis of the frame system is performed for each case. Values of bending moments and displacements obtained from the three solutions are compared and the effects of elastic connection are discussed.
This paper numerically assesses the initial stiffness and moment capacity of stainless steel composite bolted joints with concrete-filled circular tubular (CFCT) columns. By comparing with existing design codes including EN 1993-1-8 and AS/NZS 2327, a modified component method was proposed to better predict the flexural performance of joints involving circular columns and curved endplates. The modification was verified with independent experimental results. A wide range of finite element models were then developed to investigate the elastic deformations of column face in bending which contribute to the corresponding stiffness coefficient. A new design formula defining the stiffness coefficient of circular column face in bending was proposed through regression analysis. Results suggest that a factor for the stiffness coefficient of endplate in bending should be reduced to 0.68, and more contribution of prying forces needs to be considered. The modified component method and proposed formula are able to estimate the structural behaviour with reasonable accuracy. They are expected to be incorporated into the current design provisions as supplementary for beam-to-CFCT column joints.

There are many examples of steel structures subjected to severe environmental conditions with bolted connections directly exposed to extreme climatic agents such as freeze-thaw cycles or low temperatures. Some examples are: steel bridges, mining transfer towers, wind towers... These service conditions neither are included in Eurocode 3 or EN1090-2, nor there are references in other international standards. In this experimental research, 46 specimens of non-slip joints with HV M20 bolts and four different types of contact surfaces have been studied. Half of the specimens were subjected to fourteen twelve-hours freeze-thaw cycles, with periodic immersion in water and temperature oscillation. Subsequently, half of the connections were subjected to a slip test under monotonic load at temperature of -20 ± 0.5 ℃ and the other half at room temperature. The results were compared with others equal joints not subjected to freeze-thaw cycles and kept at room temperature for the same time. This finally resulted in 4 sets of joints by combining the freeze-thaw degradation or not with the low-temperature conditions or not in the slip testing. Therefore, a total of 16 different conditions were studied by also considering 4 different contact surfaces between the joined plates in each set. The results obtained show influence of environmental conditions on the slip resistant capacity of these joints.
With the wide application of fiber-reinforced composite material in aero-structures and mechanical parts, composite joint have become a very important research area because they are often the weakest sites in composite structures. In this paper, the failure strengths of the bolted joint and pin joint which have variable hole clearance were evaluated and compared. From the tests, the first failure loads of the bolted joint and pin joint with $880{\mu}m$ hole clearance have decreased by 24.2 % and 51.3 % compared to those of joints with $0{\mu}m$ hole clearance, respectively. Also, the failure index of the joints were calculated by the finite element method and compared with experimental results.

In this study, in order to investigate a modeling technique of the structure with bolted joints, four kinds of finite element model are introduced; a solid bolt model, a coupled bolt model, a spider bolt model, and no bolt model. All proposed models take account on prestrained effect and contact behavior of flanges to be joined. Among these models, a solid bolt model, which is modeled by using a 3-D solid element and a surface-to-surface contact element between the head/nut and the flange interfaces, has the best accurate responses compared with the experimental results. In addition, coupled bolt model, which couples the degree of freedom between the head/nut and the flange, shows the best effectiveness and usefulness in view of computational time and memory usage. Finally, the bolt model proposed here is adopted for structural analysis of a large diesel engine of a ship consisting of several parts which is connected by long stay bolts.

During the operation of military aircraft, maintenance is divided into organizational, intermediate and depot maintenance. In the depot maintenance, after removal of major parts and removable doors, damage assessment is performed. Locating damage, charactering the damage and determining its extent, zoning the damage on the part being repaired and re-evaluation of the damaged area after damage removal. Repair joints are classified by bonded joints and bolted joints, depending on joining material. In this paper, repair method in aging aircraft is investigated and the possibility of application of copmposite patch is surveyed.
In general, structures have various joints such as bonded joint, bolted joint, bearing joint and welded joint. Dynamic modelling of such joints has been the current topic of interest. In this study, the dynamic modelling of plate structures with bonded joint was investigated by using modal testing, sensitivity analysis and condensation-inverse condensation method of FEM. A proper modelling procedure was proposed and the validity was verified.
