To improve the heat transfer efficiency of the reactor fuel assembly, it is necessary to accurately calculate the two-phase flow boiling characteristics and the critical heat flux (CHF) in the fuel assembly. In this paper, a Eulerian two-fluid model combined with the extended wall boiling model was used to numerically simulate the 5 × 5 fuel rod bundle with spacer grids (four sets of mixing vane grids and four sets of simple support grids without mixing vanes). We calculated and analyzed 11 experimental conditions under different pressure, inlet temperature, and mass flux. After comparing the CHF and the location of departure from the nucleate boiling obtained by the numerical simulation with the experimental results, we confirmed the reliability of computational fluid dynamic analysis for the prediction of the CHF of the rod bundle and the boiling characteristics of the two-phase flow. Subsequently, we analyzed the influence of the spacer grid and mixing vanes on the void fraction, liquid temperature, and secondary flow distribution. The research in this article provides theoretical support for the design of fuel assemblies.
Nucleate boiling experiments on heating surface of constant wall temperature were performed using R113 for almost saturated pool boiling conditions. A microscale heater array and Wheatstone bridge circuits were used to maintain a constant wall temperature condition of heating surface and to measure the heat flow rate with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Bubble images during the bubble growth were taken as 5000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera synchronized with the heat flow rate measurements. The bubble growth behavior was analyzed using the new dimensionless parameters for each growth regions to permit comparisons with previous experimental results at the same scale. We found that the new dimensionless parameters can describe the whole growth region as initial and later (thermal) respectively. The comparisons showed good agreement in the initial and thermal growth regions. In the initial growth region including surface tension controlled, transition and inertia controlled regions as divided by Robinson and Judd, the bubble growth rate showed that the bubble radius was proportional to $t^{2/3}$ regardless of working fluids and heating conditions. And in the thermal growth region as also called asymptotic region, the bubble showed a growth rate that was proportional to $t^{1/5}$, also. Those growth rates were slower than the growth rates proposed in previous analytical analyses. The required heat flow rate for the volume change of the observed bubble was estimated to be larger than the heat flow rate measured at the wall. Heat, which is different from the instantaneous heat supplied through the heating wall, can be estimated as being transferred through the interface between bubble and liquid even with saturated pool condition. This phenomenon under a saturated pool condition needs to be analyzed and the data from this study can supply the good experimental data with the precise boundary condition (constant wall temperature).

Bubble images during the bubble growth were taken as 5000 frames a sec using a high-speed CCD camera synchronized with the heat flow rate measurements. This paper is presented an experimental study of flow boiling heat transfer characteristics of ammonia, and is focused on pressure gradient and heat transfer coefficient of the refrigerant flow inside horizontal small tube with inner diameter of 3.0 mm and length of 2000 mm. The direct heating method is applied for supplying heat to the refrigerant, where the test tube is uniformly heated by electric current. The local heat transfer coefficients were obtained over a heat flux range of 20 to $80kW/m^2$, a mass flux range of 50 to $500kg/m^2s$, a saturation temperature range of 0 to $10^{\circ}C$, and quality up to 1.0. The pressure drops increase with increasing mass flux and heat flux, and with decreasing saturation temperature. The heat transfer coefficients increase with increasing mass flux and saturation temperature in middle and high quality region. And the local heat transfer coefficient increase with increasing heat flux in low quality region. The heat transfer coefficient of the experimental result was compared with six existing heat transfer coefficient correlation. A new boiling heat transfer coefficient correlation based on the superposition model for ammonia in small tubes is developed average deviation of -0.17% and mean deviation of 10.85%.
We devised calibration procedure for industrial thermometers by a comparison method at the boiling point of nitrogen (${\sim}-196^{\circ}C$). The uncertainty of the calibration was 4 mK (k = 2). As experimentally demonstrated in this work, the effect of the atmospheric pressure on the boiling point of nitrogen can be easily detected by the thermometer. Therefore, when the boiling point of nitrogen is used for calibration of thermometer by comparison, either a reference thermometer must be used to provide the reference temperature or the effect of atmospheric pressure should be carefully considered. The use of a copper block with a large thermal mass soaked into the liquid nitrogen was proven to be more reliable, and the stability of the temperature immersed into the copper block was 1.4 mK. The temperatures at the thermometer wells, evaluated by the crossed-measurement method to compensate for the inaccuracy of the thermometers and the linear drift of the temperature of the copper block, were equivalent within 0.23 mK of standard uncertainty.
Boiling heat transfer characteristics of liquid nitrogen in a stainless steel plain tube and wire coil inserted tubes were investigated. The test tubes, which had an inner diameter of 10.6 m and a length of 1.65 m, were horizontally located. Five wire coils having different pitch and thickness were inserted into the plain tube. The pitches of the wire coils were 18.4, 27.6, and 36.8 m, and the thickness was 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 mm respectively. Tests were conducted at a saturation temperature of $-191^{\circ}$, mass fluxes from 58 to 105 kg/$m^2s$, and heat fluxes from 22.5 to 32.7 kw/$m^2$. A direct heating method was used to apply heat to the test section. The boiling heat transfer coefficients of liquid nitrogen were represented as a function of vapor quality, which showed significant drop at the dryout vapor quality. The maximum heat transfer enhancement using the wire coil inserted tubes over the plain tube was $174\%$ for 'Wire 3' having a thickness of 2.5 mm and a pitch of 18.4 mm.
In this work, nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of R134a and R1234yf are measured, on flat plain, 26 fpi low fin, Turbo-B, Turbo-C and Thermoexcel-E surfaces. All data are taken at the liquid pool temperature of $7^{\circ}C$, on a small square copper plate ($9.53mm{\times}9.53mm$), at heat fluxes from $10kW/m^2$ to $200kW/m^2$, with an interval of $10kW/m^2$. Test results show that nucleate boiling HTCs of all enhanced surfaces are greatly improved, as compared to that of a plain surface. Nucleate pool boiling HTCs of R1234yf are very similar to those of R134a, for the five surfaces tested.

Convective boiling heat transfer coefficients were measured in a horizontal minichannel with R-l34a. The test section was made of stainless steel tube with an inner diameter of 3.0 mm and a length of 2m. It was uniformly heated by applying electric current directly to the tube. Local heat transfer coefficients were obtained for heat fluxes from 10 to $40kW/m^2$, mass fluxes from 200 to $600kgT/m^2s$, qualities up to 1.0, and the inlet saturation temperature of $10^{\circ}C$. The experimental results were mapped on Wojtan et $al.'s^(7)$ and Wang et $al.'s^(8)$ flow pattern maps. The nucleate boiling was predominant at low vapor quality whereas the convective boiling was predominant at high vapor quality. Laminar flow appeared in the flow with minichannel. The experimental results were compared with six existing two-phase heat transfer coefficient correlations. A new boiling heat transfer coefficient correlation based on the superposition model for refrigerants was developed with mean and average deviations of 10.39% and -3.66%, respectively.
This work studies for heat transfer and pressure drop performance of integral inner and outer fin tubes, designed to enhance the heat transfer performance of smooth tubes for in recipro and turbo refrigerator or high performance compact heat exchangers. Eight different inner spiral fin copper tubes with integral fin at outside surfaces were employed to improve boiling heat transfer coeffcient. For comparison, tests were made using a plain tube having the inside diameter and an outside diameter equal to that at the root of the fins for the finned tubes. Pool boiling heat transfer is investigated experimentally and theoretically on single tube arrangement. The refrigerant evaporates at a saturation state of 1 bar on the outside tube surface heated by hot water. The refrigerant R11 ($CFCl_3$) was used at a pressure of $P_s=1bar$ as a convenient test fluid with a boiling temperature of $T_s=23.6^{\circ}C$. The observed heat transfer enhancement of boiling for finned tubes significantly exceeded that to be expected on grounds of increased area. The maximum Vapor - side enhancement(i.e., vapor - side heat transfer coefficient of finned tube/vapor - side coefficient for plain tube) was found to be around 4 at 1299fpm - 30grooves tube.
