Efficacy of itraconazole in 18 cases of Malassezia dermatitis in dogs (개에서 Malassezia 피부염에 대한 itraconazole 치료 18례)

  • Itraconazole was found to be an effective antifungal for the treatment of canine Malassezia dermatitis (MD). MD was diagnosed in 18 dogs, which were treated with itraconazole administered orally at 5 mg/kg of body weight, q12hrs, for 21 to 30 days. High prevalence breeds of MD were Maltese $(22\%)$, Cocker Spaniel $(17\%)$, Pekingese $(11\%)$, and Vizsla $(11\%)$. The dermatological signs of Malassezia dermatitis were crust $(31\%)$, alopecia $(25\%)$, hyperpigmentation $(25\%)$, scales$(19\%)$, erythema $(13\%)$, lichenification $(11\%)$, pustule $(11\%)$, ear swelling$(11\%)$, papules $(5\%)$, and offensive odor $(5\%)$. Commonly affected areas were ear canal $(41\%)$, axillae $(18\%)$, groin $(15\%)$, perianal $(12\%)$, ventral aspect of the neck $(9\%)$, interdigital spaces$(1\%)$, and muzzle $(1\%)$. Sixty seven percent of dogs with MD had cocci. Clinical responses of itraconazole were seen good, moderate, no responses of itraconazole, in $89\%,\;0\%,\;and\;11\%$, respectively, according to the owner's satisfaction to follow up call. Recurrence was detected on five good responsive dogs and adverse effects of the treatment were detected in only one dog. On the basis of this clinical study, itraconazole is a good choice in the treatment of canine Malassezia dermatitis. Efficacy, frequency of administration and veterinary approval are the major advantages.

Study on Differences in Dietary Habits, and Nutrients Status of Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian University Students (남자 대학생을 대상으로 한 Lacto-Ovo-Vegetarian과 Non-Vegetarian의 식습관 및 영양상태에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the dietary habits, health status, and nutrients status of male college students in Seoul according to vegetarian habits. The heights of lacto-ovo vegetarian and non-vegetarian students were not significantly different. However, body weight was significantly higher in the non-vegetarians. The lacto-ovo-vegetarians were vegetarians for religious reasons, and indicated 86.0% satisfaction with their meals. However, the lacto-ovo vegetarian and non-vegetarians showed concerns about low nutrient intakes. Lacto-ovo vegetarians displayed a higher proportion of meal regularity and daily breakfast as compared to non-vegetarians. In addition, their favorite food when eating out was Korean food. Lacto-ovo vegetarians showed higher intakes of milk or other dairy products (yogurt, etc.), vegetables, and fruit, as well as more regular eating habits. In contrast, the non-vegetarians showed higher intakes of high-protein foods (eggs, beans, tofu, etc.) and fatty foods. Lacto-ovo vegetarians showed lower intakes of total energy, as well as vitamins $B_2$, $B_6$, and niacin. Non-vegetarians showed in sufficient dietary fiber intake. In conclusion, lacto-ovo-vegetarians need a meal plan to consider the intake of other nutrients, while non-vegetarians should try to prevent the occurrence of health problems due to excessive intake of nutrients.

Development and Assessment of a Non-face-to-face Obesity-Management Program During the Pandemic (팬데믹 시기 비대면 비만관리 프로그램의 개발 및 평가)

  • Objective: This study evaluated the effects of a non-face-to-face obesity management program, implemented during the pandemic. Methods: The non-face-to-face obesity management program used the Intervention mapping protocol (IMP). The program was put into effect over the course of eight weeks, from September 14 to November 13, 2020 in 48 overweight and obese adults, who applied to participate through the Daegu Citizen Health Support Center. Results: IMP was first a needs assessment was conducted; second, goal setting for behavior change was established; third, evidence-based selection of arbitration method and performance strategy was performed; fourth, program design and validation; fifth, the program was run; and sixth, the results were evaluated. The average weight after participation in the program was reduced by 1.2kg, average WC decreased by 3cm, and average BMI decreased by 0.8kg/m2 (p<0.05). The results of the health behavior survey showed a positive improvement in lifestyle factors, including average daily intake calories, fruit intake, and time spent in walking exercise before and after participation in the program. A statistically significant difference was seen (p<0.05). The satisfaction level for program process evaluation was high, at 4.57±0.63 point. Conclusion: The non-face-to-face obesity management program was useful for obesity management for adults in communities, as it enables individual counseling by experts and active participation through self-body measurement and recording without restriction by time and place. However, the program had some restrictions on participation that may relate to the age of the subject, such as skill and comfort in using a mobile app.
