EXPERIMENTAL REPRODUCTION AND NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE SIDE FORCE ON AN OGIVE FOREBODY AT A HIGH ANGLE OF ATTACK (고받음각 동체에 발생하는 측력의 실험적 재현 및 수치적 분석)

  • Behavior of the side force generated at high angles of attack by two ogive-cylinder bodies of revolution with nose fineness ratio of 2.3 (B1) and 3.5 (B2) and the effect of a strip placed close the nose tip of each body (B1S and B2S) are analyzed through the wind tunnel test at ReD=200,000 and a=42~60 deg. The side force generated by B1 is increased by placing a strip. The side force generated by B2 is in the starboard direction and its magnitude is higher than that of the B1S. The effect of the strips with various dimensions placed on B2 is investigated. It is found that the 4-layer strip placed on the starboard reversed the direction of the side force into port direction. It is confirmed by numerical simulations that the strip promotes the flow separation and increases the average pressure on the side where it is placed and consequently produces the side force in the corresponding direction.

  • In this paper, a systematic 5-mode(road steering, all-wheel steering, crab steering, reduced swing out mode and independent steering) steering algorithm design process for an all-terrain mobile crane with 5 axles and all steerable wheels is proposed. Steering angles for each steering mode are designed based not only on basic theory but also on vehicle specification, design limitation and requirements. A multi-body dynamic analysis is carried out to investigate the feasibility of the steering algorithm. According to the results, the proposed steering algorithm meets the objective of each steering mode.

  • The effect of the bow shape on the ship motion response among longitudinal regular waves, is investigated employing the strip theory. The two dimensional hydrodynamic forces such as added mass and damping are calculated by the integral equation method for arbitrary sections. Nine ship models are selected for investigation. They are U, UV and V bow ship forms of different block coefficient of 0.6, 0.7 and 0.8 with constant after body. The heave amplitude of the V bow ship is smaller than that of the U bow ship in the whole range of wave length except extremely short wave as were stated by the earlier investigators. This results holds also in the case of bow vertical motions such as vertical relative displacement, velocity and acceralation. As to the pitch amplitudes, the V bow ship gives smaller value in long waves but larger value in short waves. However, heave and pitch phase angles are practically not influenced by the form of the fore body sections. In the bow motions, a little difference in phase angle is appeared in the vicinity of the wave which has same ship length. With respect to the wave exiting force and moment unfovourable effects could be expected in V bow ships. And these tendency hold also in the wave bending moment.

Study for Real-World Accident Database and Occupant Behavior Analysis in Far-Side Collisions (Far-Side 실사고 분석과 승객거동해석 연구)

  • Occupant behaviors and body contact with vehicle interior parts are main injury mechanism in far-side collisions. In vehicle side impact accident where the crash accident occurs on the opposite side of the vehicle from the a particular occupant, it is exposed in terms of relatively larger lateral motion to interact with the opposite side of the vehicle structure. The challenge of minimizing motions of upper body and injury risk according to a direct contact is a primary occupant protection research. This study has performed a data analysis of real-world accident database extracted from the 2016~2020 CISS database and a parametric investigation of impact angles and occupant kinematics in far-side lateral and oblique impact simulations. A detailed data analysis was conducted to reveal the relationship among the accident and injury data. Database analysis and computational far-side impact results proposed the fundamental vehicle design for safety improvement in far-side collisions.

Unsteady Lift and Drag Forces Acting on the Elliptic Cylinder

  • A parametric study has been accomplished to figure out the effects of elliptic cylinder thickness, angle of attack, and Reynolds number on the unsteady lift and drag forces exerted on the elliptic cylinder. A two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes flow solver is developed based on the SIMPLER method in the body-intrinsic coordinates system to analyze the unsteady viscous flow over elliptic cylinder. Thickness-to-chord ratios of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 elliptic cylinders are simulated at different Reynolds numbers of 400 and 600, and angles of attack of $10^{\circ},\;20^{\circ},\;and\;30^{\circ}$. Through this study, it is observed that the elliptic cylinder thickness, angle of attack, and Reynolds number are very important parameters to decide the lift and drag forces. All these parameters also affect significantly the frequencies of the unsteady force oscillations.

  • The aim of this study is to show the effect of starting block angle on the starting motion of sprinters using a crouching start. After installing starting blocks on forced platform, and having four highly comparative sprinters use the starting blocks, I analyzed the angular momentum of a crouching start. From the results of the analysis, the following conclusions could be drawn: There were differences of angular momentum both in body's X, Y, and Z axes and in the thighs' X axes, but not in the pelvis and lower legs. As to the general change of block angle, we noticed that an angular momentum for each segments was higher at an angle of 50 to 55 degrees.

  • Shark skin has functionalities such as self-cleaning and antifouling; it also exhibits excellent drag reduction owing to a hierarchical structure of microgrooves and nanometer-long chain mucus drag reduction interfaces around the shark body. In this study, the wettability of a shark skin surface and its replicas are evaluated. First, a shark skin template is taken from a real shark. Then, shark skin replicas are produced directly from a shark skin template, using a micromolding technique. The quantitative replication precision of the shark skin replicas is evaluated by comparing the geometry of the shark skin template to the replica using 2D surface profiles. Contact angles at the solid-air-water interfaces are evaluated for the shark skin template and its replicas under two conditions: with and without hydrophobic coating. The results show that the microriblets on shark skin improve the hydrophobic feature and play a critical role in self-cleaning.

Optimal Trajectory Modeling of Humanoid Robot for Argentina Tango Walking

  • To implement Argentina tango dancer-like walking of the humanoid robot, a new trajectory generation scheme based on particle swarm optimization of the blending polynomial is presented. Firstly, the characteristics of Argentina tango walking are derived from observation of tango dance. Secondly, these are reflected in walking pose conditions and cost functions of particle swarm optimization to determine the coefficients of blending polynomial. For the stability of biped walking, zero moment point and reference trajectory of swing foot are also included in cost function. Thirdly, after tango walking cycle is divided into 3 stages with 2 postures, optimal trajectories of ankles, knees and hip of lower body, which include 6 sagittal and 4 coronal angles, are derived in consequence of optimization. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed scheme is validated by simulating biped walking of humanoid robot with derived trajectories under the 3D Simscape environment.

  • This study represents numerical analysis on the thermal and fluid flow of the air layer in a solar collector. The boundary conditions was assumed that the top and bottom wall of the air layer have a heating and cooling surface. respectively. and this calculation model have a solid body with a cooling temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. As the results of simulations. the magnitudes of the velocity vectors and isotherms are increased proportionally to the tilt angles. As the tilt angle is increased. the mean Nusselt numbers are increased and the maximum value of the mean Nusselt number was appeared at tilt angle ${\theta}=75^{\circ}$.

Influence of Surface Tension on Pinhole Phenomenon of Earthen Ware Glazes (도기유의 표면장력이 Pinhole 현상에 미치는 영향)

  • The corelation between surface tensions and surface appearances of SK O5a opaque glazes for earthen wares were investigated. The surface tension values were theoretically calculated by using Dietzel's factors of constituent oxides of glaze. The surface appearances of glazes, especially the pinhole phenomena were strongly effected by the surface tension values showing the following general tendencies: (1) In the range of 305±3 dynes/cm of surface tensions, glazes showed almost no pjnholes. (2) In the range of surface tensions less than 300 dynes/cm, the large numbers of small pinholes or eggshell textures were observed. (3) In the range of surface tensions higher than 310 dynes/cm, large and deep pinholes were observed. (4) The contact angles of glazes on the wall tile body substrate are in the good proportional agreement with the surface tension values calculated by Dietzel's factors.
