  • To resolve the problems of Poisson/impulse noise, blurriness, and sharpness in degraded X-ray images, a novel and efficient enhancement algorithm based on X-ray image fusion using a discrete wavelet transform is proposed in this paper. The proposed algorithm consists of two basics. First, it applies the techniques of boundary division to detect Poisson and impulse noise corrupted pixels and then uses the Wiener filter approach to restore those corrupted pixels. Second, it applies the sharpening technique to the same degraded X-ray image. Thus, it has two source X-ray images, which individually preserve the enhancement effects. The details and approximations of these sources X-ray images are fused via different fusion rules in the wavelet domain. The results of the experiment show that the proposed algorithm successfully combines the merits of the Wiener filter and sharpening and achieves a significant proficiency in the enhancement of degraded X-ray images exhibiting Poisson noise, blurriness, and edge details.

  • In this paper we present a simple, efficient method for detection of sharp digital images. Recently many digital cameras are equipped with various autofocusing functions to help users take well-focused pictures as easily as possible. However, acquired digital pictures can be further degraded by motion, limited contrast, and inappropriate amount of exposure, to name a few. In order to decide whether to process the image or not, or whether to delete it or not, reliable measure of image quality to detect sharp images from blurry ones is needed. This paper presents a blurriness/sharpness measure, and demonstrates its feasibility using extensive experiments. This method is fast and easy to implement, and accurate. Regardless of the detection accuracy, existing measures are computation-intensive. However, the proposed measure in this paper is not demanding in computation time. Needless to say, this measure can be used for various imaging applications including autofocusing and astigmatism correction.

  • The glaucoma, cataract and causing-blindness-diseases have high clinical importance by their severity of the symptoms and possibility of causing visual loss. Glaucoma is caused by an increase in the intraocular pressure, if severe enough, can cause field loss and eventually complete blindness. In cataract, the general clarity of vision is impaired due to a loss of transparency of the chrystalline lens of the eye. The causing-blindness-diseases can be divided to PokMaeng which cause sudden blindness and ChungMaeng, in which visual acuity is losed gradually. In glaucoma, cataract and causing-blindness-diseases, the visual acuity is affected and the patient may complain blurriness, fatigue of eye, visual field loss deficiency or scintillant feeling, vitreous floaters. In this study, 32 patients who have cataract, glaucoma or other causing-blindness-diseases was treated with oriental medicine or acupuncture from July, l996 to May. 1997, and was followed up by their symptoms and visual acuity. 1. In glaucoma patients, intraocular pressure decreased significantry and the symptoms improved positively. 2. In cataract patients, there was no improvement of visual acuity but $40\%$ of patients found their symptoms improved. 3. In causing-blindness-diseases, $57\%$ of patients reported improvement of their symptoms such as blurriness or fatigue of eye. 4. Through oriental medical treatment, the symptoms of glaucoma, cataract and causing-blindness-diseases can be treated effectively. Therefore oriental management seems to be possible to cure glaucoma, cataract and causing-blindness-diseases.

  • In this paper we present a simple, efficient method for detecting the blurry photographs. Recently many digital cameras are equipped with various auto-focusing functions to help users take well-focused pictures as easily as possible. In addition, motion compensation devices are able to compensate motion causing blurriness in the images. However, digital pictures can be degraded by limited contrast, inappropriate exposure, imperfection of auto-focusing or motion compensating devices, unskillfulness of the photographers, and so on. In order to decide whether to process the images or not, or whether to delete them or not, reliable measure of image degradation to detect blurry images from sharp ones is needed. This paper presents a blurriness/sharpness measure, and demonstrates its feasibility by using extensive experiments. This method is fast, easy to implement and accurate. • In ultrasonic medical imaging, spatial compounding of images is a technique where ultrasonic beam is steered to examine patient tissues in multiple angles. In the conventional ultrasonic diagnostic imaging, the steering of the ultrasonic beam is achieved electronically using the phased array transducer elements. In this paper, a spatial compounding approach is presented where the ultrasonic probe element is rotated mechanically and the beam steering is achieved mechanically. In the spatial compounding, target position is computed using the value of the rotation axis and the transducer array angular position. However, in the process of the rotation mechanism construction and the control system there arises the inevitable uncertainties in these values. These geometric parameter errors result in the target position error, and the consequence is a blurry compounded image. In order to reduce these target position errors, we present a spatial compounding scheme where error correcting transformation matrices are computed and applied to the raw images before spatial compounding to reduce the blurriness in the compounded image. The proposed scheme is illustrated using phantom and live scan images of human knee, and it is shown that the blurriness is effectively reduced.

  • We present a novel scheme for generating line drawings from 2D images, aiming to facilitate effective visual communication. In contrast to conventional edge detectors, our technique imitates the human line drawing process to generate lines effectively and intuitively. Our technique consists of three parts: line extraction, line rendering, and user guidance. In line extraction, we extract lines by estimating a likelihood function to effectively find the genuine shape boundaries. In line rendering, we consider the feature scale and the blurriness of lines with which the detail and the focus-level of lines are controlled. We also employ stroke textures to provide a variety of illustration styles. User guidance is allowed to modify the shapes and positions of lines interactively, where immediate response is provided by GPU implementation of most line extraction operations. Experimental results demonstrate that our technique generates various kinds of line drawings from 2D images enabled by the control over detail, focus, and style.

  • This paper addresses the factors hindering the image quality of lines in inkjet printed on polyester fabric as printing media. Lines were printed onto different types of polyester fabrics in warp and filling directions. Line image quality including line width, edge blurriness, and edge raggedness was assessed. The effect of capillary wicking on line image quality of printed spun polyester fabric is discussed. The factors on the image quality include printing position(top of the yam or between the yarn), printing direction(warp or filling), yarn structures(filament or spun), thread size(yam or fiber), finishing, and ink properties(evaporation rate). More than 30% differences in image quality results were observed by changing the printing location on the spun polyester fabric. The best results of the image quality were obtained with the printed plain and spun polyester fabrics. The fiber sizes may affect capillary size; therefore, the image quality can be dissimilar. Types of finishing materials and inks greatly improve the line image quality on spun polyester fabrics.

  • This paper addresses factors of line image quality on grain leather printed via inkjet printer. Lines were printed onto coated leather media, and line width, edge blurriness, and edge raggedness were evaluated for line image quality. Various factors influenced to wetting and capillary wicking were studied and found out that wicking through capillary between fibers causes significant feathering on leather surface similar with pulp capillary in copy Paper. Polyurethane and acrylic resin coating resulted good image qualify by reducing capillary wicking. The mixture of polyurethane and acrylic resin applied on grain leather satisfied with both image quality and surface hand. $AllWrite^{TM}$ ink brought best results of image quality, comparing with $VeraPrint^{TM}$ ink and $JetWrite^{TM}$ ink.

  • Motion-induced artifacts on LCDs appear as blurred boundaries and/or color aberration between the moving objects and background. Perceived degree of the motion-induced artifacts depends on the blur width as well as color difference. This paper presents a quantitative measure for the motion-induced artifacts on LCDs. Performance of the proposed measure is verified by calculating correlation coefficients between the proposed measures and the results of human visual tests performed on the 240 Hz and 120 Hz scanning LCD TVs.

  • The present study have investigated the effect of the characteristics of stereoscopic images and viewing environment on visual fatigue. We manipulated the speed of stereo images with motion-in-depth and viewing distance, which were used as representative variables of the characteristics of stereo image and viewing environment, respectively. Visual fatigue was evaluated with use of a subjective questionnaire which is consisting of 5 different and independent factors: "Eye pain", "Visual stress," "Nauseousness", "Body stiffness", and "Blurriness". In general, when viewing time increased from 10 minutes to 20 and 40 minutes, observers felt severe visual fatigue. Among other factors, only the factor score of "Nauseousness" was significantly increased as the speed of object moving in depth became faster. When viewing distance was increased, the score of "Blurriness" was decreased. These results suggest that different kind of the visual fatigue might be induced depending on characteristics of the stereo images and viewing environment.
