Membrane fouling is the main issue hindering the expansion of low pressure membrane processes for surface water treatment. Therefore, applying periodic hydraulic cleaning for fouling control should be well optimized. Better understanding of membrane fouling associated with periodic hydraulic cleaning would be useful to optimize membrane cleaning strategies. By comparing experimental permeability data with the classical Hermia blocking laws, this study aims at analyzing membrane fouling and understanding dominant fouling mechanisms occurring when filtering a synthetic surface water solution with a pressurized membrane process during six filtration cycles of 30 min each, separated with cyclic cleaning of 1 min by backwashing and forward flushing separately and combined. When applying single cleaning technique, membrane fouling during the first cycles was controlled by complete blocking mechanism while the last cycles were dominated by cake formation. Nevertheless, when combining cleaning technique better membrane regeneration was obtained and fouling was mainly due to cake formation.

Cirsium japonicum var. maackii is a traditional Korean wild perennial herb used to treat blood circulation, high blood pressure, inflammation, diabetes, and kidney damage. However, it is not known whether C. japonicum var. maackii directly improves endothelial dysfunction. In this study, the effect of C. japonicum var. maackii (CJE) on tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-induced vascular inflammation was investigated in vitro using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). As a result, CJE inhibited the production of VCAM-1, ICAM-1 and ROS increased by TNF-α in HUVECs. In addition, treatment with CJE attenuated IκB phosphorylation and translocation of NF-κB to the nucleus. These results suggest that CJE can suppress TNFα-induced adhesion molecule expression by blocking NF-κB signaling and inhibiting ROS generation. The results of this study show that CJE has the potential to be used to treat and prevent inflammation associated with endothelial cell damage.

The reconstructed images from highly compressed MPEG or H.263 data have noticeable image degradations, such as blocking artifacts near the block boundaries, corner outliers at cross points of blocks, and ringing noise near image edges, because the MPEG or H.263 quantizes the transformed coefficients of 8$\times$8 pixel blocks. A post-processing algorithm has been proposed by authors to reduce quantization effects, such as blocking artifacts, corner outliers, and ringing noise, in MPEG-decompressed images. Our signal-adaptive post-processing algorithm reduces the quantization effects adaptively by using both spatial frequency and temporal information extracted from the compressed data. The blocking artifacts are reduced by one-dimensional (1-D) horizontal and vertical low pass filtering (LPF), and the ringing noise is reduced by two-dimensional (2-D) signal-adaptive filtering (SAF). A comparison study of the subjective quality evaluation using modified single stimulus method (MSSM), the objective quality evaluation (PSNR) and the computation complexity analysis between the signal-adaptive post-processing algorithm and the MPEG-4 VM (Verification Model) post-processing algorithm is performed by computer simulation with several MPEG-4 image sequences. According to the comparison study, the subjective image qualities of both algorithms are similar, whereas the PSNR and the comparison complexity analysis of the signal-adaptive post-processing algorithm shows better performance than the VM post-processing algorithm.

In this paper, a extended blocking probability formula for reverse link of a DS/CDMA cellular system supporting voice and data service is derived in Rayleigh fading channel. Also, voice and data Erlang capacity considering shadowing are analyzed and compared with those considering both shadowing and multipath fading, respectively. Assuming that the blocking probability set 1% in the Rayleigh fading channel, they are observed that voice Erlang capacity of 13.38 Erlangs and data Erlang capacity of 8.92 Erlangs are supported at the data rate $R_b$=9.6 kbps, and voice Erlang capacity of 7.47 Erlangs and data Erlang capacity of 4.98 Erlangs are supported at the data rate $R_b$=14.4 kbps, respectively, and then are less 21.4% for $R_b$=9.6 kbps, 24.9% for $R_b$=14.4 kbps than Erlang capacity considering shadowing only, respectively. It is shown that the effect of multipath fading must not be ignored. Also, it is presented that accurate voice and data Erlang capacity which could be supported by the DS/CDMA cellular system.
To investigate the modulation of nerve growth factor (NGF) during corneal epithelial wound healing and the effect of topical NGF on corneal epithelial wound healing in dogs. An axial epithelial defect was created in the right eye using 6mm axial corneal mechanical debridement while the left served as an unwounded control. The tears were collected from both eyes during 1 week and the corneal epithelium was processed for the measurement of NGF at day 0 and 7. The NGF content of tears and corneal epithelium was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In another experiment, the animals were divided into 3 groups. The right eyes in each group were treated every six hours with 200 ug/ml of recombinant human (rh) NGF, murine NGF, or 600 ug/ml of anti-NGF blocking antibody. The left eye of each animal was treated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) to serve as controls. Wound healing was analyzed using NIH image software. Tear NGF was markedly increased in the wounded eyes, relative to tears from control eyes during the early healing period. The NGF content of the corneal epithelium was elevated in the wounded eye (p=0.024). Time to wound closure and rate of epithelial migration were not significantly different between the NGF treated or the NGF antibody treated, and the control BSA treated eyes. Corneal epithelial wounding increased NGF content only on the wounded side during the early healing period. Neither topical recombinant human or murine NGF affected corneal epithelial wound healing in the normal dog.

In order to discover new types of 5-hydroxytryptamine antagonists, we have devoted our attention to investigating naturally occurring compounds having anti-5HT activity in vitro. Recently, ${\gamma}$-mangostin [1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxy-2,8-bis(3-methyl-2-bytenyl)-9H-xanthen-9-one] from the fruit hull of Garcinia mangostana Linn has been shown to be a selective antagonist for 5-hydroxytryptamine$_{2A}$ receptors in smooth muscle and platelets. It is of interesting that y-mangostin which does not have a nitrogen atom, possesses marked 5-$HT_{2A}$ receptor blocking activity. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of ${\gamma}$-mangostin on central 5-HT receptors by using animal behavioural models. Intracerebronventricular injection of ${\gamma}$-mangostin (10-40n mol/mouse) inhibited 5-fluoro-${\alpha}$-methyltryptamin (5-FMT) (45 mg kg$^{-1}$, i.p.)-induced head-twitch response in mice in the presence or absence of citalopram (5-HT-uptake inhibitor). Neither the 5-FMT- nor the 8-hydroxy-2-( di-n-propylamino )tetralin (5-HT$_{1A}$-agonist)-induced 5-HT syndrome (head weaving and hindlimb abduction) was affected by ${\gamma}$-mangostin. The locomotor activity stimulated by 5-FMT through the activation of at-adrenoceptors did not alter in the presence of ${\gamma}$-mangostin. 5-HT-induced inositol phosphates accumulation in mouse brain slices was abolished by ketanserin. ${\gamma}$-Mangostin caused a concentration-dependent inhibition of the inositol phosphates accumulation and the binding of [$^3H$]-spiperone, a specific 5-$HT_{2A}$ receptor antagonist, to mouse brain membranes. Kinetic analysis of the [$^H3$]-spiperone binding revealed that ${\gamma}$-mangostin increased the $_{d}$ value without affecting the $B_{max}$ value, indicating the mode of the competitive nature of the inhibition by ${\gamma}$-mangostin. These results suggest that ${\gamma}$-mangostin inhibits 5-FMT-induced head-twitch response in mice by blocking 5-$HT_{2A}$ receptors not by blocking the release of 5-HT from the central neurone. ${\gamma}$-Mangostin is a promising 5-$HT_{2A}$ receptors antagonist in the central nervous system.m.

A scheme to evaluate the number of users and cell coverage of a WCDMA supporting multi-rate traffic is newly presented through calculation of the realizable Erlang capacity from a derived blocking probability and the path loss from the COST231 Walfisch-Ikegami(W) model. We evaluate the voice-data Erlang capacities at various data rates of 15 kbps to 960 kbps and it is shown that they have a linear relationship to each other. When the E$\_$b//N$\_$o/ is low from 4 ㏈ to 3 ㏈ in case of voice capacity of 50 Erlang at 8 kbps, the result shows the increase for the data capacity of 10 Erlang and the enlargement of 100 m for the cell coverage at low rate of 15 kbps, and the increase of 0.11 Erlang and the enlargement of 40 m at high rate of 960 kbps. The increase of the blocking probability results in the increase of the Erlang capacity, but not an effect on the cell coverage, and the increase of active users in a cell results in the decrease of the coverage.
This experiment did comparison and analysis that protected soil particle migration have affect on function of the filter and therefore fall function of the filter. Results obtained are as follows: 1.High water head makes to be much movement of fine sand and out flow of particle to the outside. The filter have large opening size that reached stability an early stage, but much fine sand is washed away. If the velocity turns fast and becomes small, blocking phenomenon is remarkable nearby the filter-sand interface. 2. The movement of fine sand that effect on function of filter depend on opening size and change of water head. Under the same condition, USCE filter and USSPL filter is reached earlier than other filter that is stability of stage, because it's opening size is large. 3. Residual quantity of fine sand migration was largly come out in order of USSPL, USCE, USBR, Newton & Hurley, Bertram filter. 4. The time required to stability of flow was taken less in order of Bertram, Newton & Hurley, USBR, USSPL, USCE filter and coefficient of permeability was highly come out in order of USBR, Bertram, Newton & Hurley, USSPL, USCE filter. 5. It proved that USCE and USSPL is suitable for the filter criteria.

In the present paper, as a way of reducing heavyweight impact sounds, in particular, among floor impact sounds which have come to the forefront as a social issue recently, a floor joist slab is proposed that is expected to bring an effect of reducing heavyweight impact sounds through a shift in the natural frequency by installing a floor joist on a flat-type slab to increase the rigidity of the floor slab, differently from the existing method that increases the thickness of floor slab, and the heavyweight impact sound characteristics depending on the floor joist height and interval are interpretively analyzed. As a result of the analysis, though a trend is shown where the sound pressure level decreases as the slab thickness of floor joist increases, and as no difference is shown when thickness is above a certain value, it is thought that there is a threshold for the effect of an increase in floor thickness on blockage of heavyweight impact sounds. Also, as an increase in floor rigidity resulting from an increase in the floor joist height and a decrease in the interval does not lead to a consistent increase in the performance of blocking heavyweight impact sounds, it is thought that a different floor joist height and interval should be applied to each type of house to expect optimum performance of blocking heavyweight impact sounds, and an increase of 100mm in the floor joist height or a decrease of about 100mm in the interval is expected to bring an effect of reducing heavyweight impact sounds by about 1dB to 2dB.
Interaction occuring among the different Ca concentrations, pH and temperatures in the promotive effect of Ca in pollen growth was studied by using pollen from Crinum asiaticum and Cryptostegia grandiflora. Data for pollen tube elongation were found to be more indicative of representing the promotive action of Ca ion in pollen growth than those for pollen germination, and were served to evaluate the experimental results. The pollen growth increased as the concentration of Ca increase. The optimal pH range for pollen growth shifted from the lower pH to the higher as the concentration of Ca increase. The characteristic Ca effect was disappeared, and no pH effect at various ranges was observed when pollen grains were grown at the low temperature(8$^{\circ}C$). The Ca effect became quite pronounced if temperature were raised. The Ca effect became even mroe striking if the condition was in higher pH ranges (weak alkaline). Higher pH ranges were found to be more favorable for the Ca action, whereas higher temperature was required to bring about more pronounced Ca effect. Thus, the longest pollen tube was obtained with the highest pH, temperature adopted for the medium supplemented with Ca in the present experiment, and the shortest tube with the lowest temperature applied at the highest pH. Pectin synthesis in pollen tube was considered as a metabolic process, whereas Ca binding in pectin of the pollen tube wall as non-metabolic in nature. Disappearance of Ca effect at the low temperature was probably brought about by blocking the metabolic synthesis of pectin, and nonmetabolic Ca binding seems to take place more extensively with higher concentrations of Ca and at higher pH levels than the lower.
