A Study on Vehicle Drag Coefficients in Domestic Road Tunnels (국내 도로터널내 차량항력계수 관련 연구)

  • Drag coefficient is one of the critical design factors to quantify the piston effect in vehicle tunnels. Several problems are raised on the drag coefficient currently applied for the ventilation system design; unverified adoption of the projected frontal area of the vehicle from the foreign study in the past, and lack of consideration for the slip-streaming effect. This study aims at better estimation of the traffic-induced ventilation force in the local tunnels. Values for the projected frontal area of the vehicles running on the local roads at present are proposed and results of an extensive CFD study are studied on the slip-streaming effects in various traffic conditions to quantify $K_{blockage}$ and the drag coefficient in the domestic tunnels.

  • The challenge of penetrating obstacles along with impact from weak multipath effects makes 60GHz signal very difficult to be transmitted in non-line of sight (NLOS) channel. So 60GHz system is vulnerable to obstructions and thus likely results in link interruption. While the application of cooperative technology to solve link blockage problemin 60GHz system should consider the characteristic of directional transmission for 60GHz signal. Therefore in this paper a system is proposed to solve the link blockage problem in 60GHz NLOS communication environment based on the concept of cooperation and also the beamforming technology, which is the basis of directional transmission for 60GHz communication system. The process of anti-blockage solution with cooperative communication is presented in detail, and the fast switching and recovery schemes are well designed. The theoretical values of symbol error rate (SER) using decode and forward (DF) cooperation and amplify and forward (AF) cooperation are presented respectively when the common channel interference exists. Simulation results demonstrate that the performance based on DF cooperation is better than the performance based on AF cooperation when directional transmission is used.

Channel Interference Analysis of Wideband WLAN Based IEEE802.11n for 3rd Generation Digital Signage (3세대 디지털 사이니지를 위한 IEEE802.11n 광대역 무선랜에 대한 채널 간섭 분석)

  • In this paper, we have analyzed the effects of co-channel, adjacent-channel, and the human shield(Body Blockage) for wideband WLAN based on the IEEE802.11n 40MHz channel bandwidth required for high speed digital signage service. Simulation results show that wideband WLAN can be operated with 78 interferers over 63m distance in co- channel, 80 interferer over 61m distance in adjacent channel. By applying the mitigation method for reducing the interference, we have confirmed that protection distance is improved to 51m using beamforming, and 40m using cognitive radio in co-channel interference. Also body blockage interference is reduced using adaptive channel bandwidth, C/I ratio, beamforming, power control mitigation methodology.

  • The traffic congestion is frequently occurring due to increasing demand for vehicles and development of subcenter in roads of domestic-downtown. The design of a Great depth underground double-deck tunnel planned for construction as a solution however it's mainly for a compact-car. Its low height and small section cause causalities when fire occurs. From this study, the delay system for fire smoke diffusion is developed to minimize the occurrence of casualties when fire occurs in the Great depth underground double-deck tunnel and the CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) is used to find the optimal installation interval and the blockage ratio to maximize the system effects. The study analyzed the shorter the installation interval of the system, the higher the smoke delay effect but the efficiency-change tends to be slight above a certain distance and the larger the blockage ratio, the higher the effect but the efficiency-difference is slight according to installation interval.

Three-Dimensional Flow Analysis and Improvement of Slip Factor Model for Forward-Curved Blades Centrifugal Fan

  • This work developed improved slip factor model and correction method to predict flow through impeller in forward-curved centrifugal fan. Both steady and unsteady three-dimensional CFD analyses were performed to validate the slip factor model and the correction method. The results show that the improved slip factor model presented in this paper could provide more accurate predictions for forward-curved centrifugal impeller than the other slip factor models since the present model takes into account the effect of blade curvature. The correction method is provided to predict mass-averaged absolute circumferential velocity at the exit of impeller by taking account of blockage effects induced by the large-scale backflow near the front plate and flow separation within blade passage. The comparison with CFD results also shows that the improved slip factor model coupled with the present correction method provides accurate predictions for mass-averaged absolute circumferential velocity at the exit of impeller near and above the flow rate of peak total pressure coefficient.

Experimental study of wind-induced pressures on tall buildings of different shapes

  • The modern tall buildings are often constructed as an unconventional plan and as twin buildings. Wind load on the tall building is significantly influenced by the presence of another building in the near vicinity. So, it is imperative to study wind forces on an unconventional plan shaped tall building. Mean wind pressure coefficients of a square and 'H' plan shape tall buildings are investigated using wind tunnel experiments. The experiments were carried out for various wind directions from 00 to 900 at an interval of 300 and various locations of the identical interfering building. The experimental results are presented at the windward face from the viewpoint of effects on cladding design. To quantify the interference effects, interference factors (I.F) are calculated. Mean pressure coefficients of both models are compared for isolated and interference conditions. The results show that pressure reduces with an increase in wind angle till 600 wind direction. The interfering building at full blockage interference condition generates more suction than the other two conditions. The interference factor for both models is less than unity. H-plan building model is subjected to a higher pressure than the square model.

  • Effects of an orifice on suppression of pressure oscillation in a fluid feeding line are investigated numerically through the installation of an orifice inside the feeding line. Based on linear acoustic theory, acoustic-damping effect of an orifice is emphasized in this study. When an orifice is installed at the node of pressure oscillation corresponding to the anti-node of velocity oscillation, damping capacity is maximized. On the other hand, the orifice installed at the anti-node of pressure oscillation has little damping capacity. As the blockage ratio and thickness of an orifice increase in the feeding line, damping factor increases. The feeding line with smaller diameter has more damping capacity, but damping factor increases more appreciably with blockage ratio in the feeding line with larger diameter.

  • Objectives : This study aims to examine the efficacy and application of Cannabis according to its parts. Methods : Contents on efficacy, treatment, and application of Cannabis in Material Medica and other texts of East Asian Medicine were collected and interpreted to deduce each characteristic. Results : Cannabis was found to be applicable to various wind symptoms and wind stroke, various pain and injuries, skin diseases, blockage or leaking of urine or feces, disease related to genitalia and anus, chronic ague, women's disease related to menstruation, birth, pregnancy, and to have the effects of heightening perceptive and sensory organs, detoxification and anesthesia, stimulating hair growth, and eradicating parasites. It drives out wind-heat pathogenic qi, circulates qi and blood, which allowed it to be applied not only to blockages but to symptoms of leakage. In other words, Cannabis was used when both excess and deficiency diseases were present, the former caused by acute blockage and the latter accompanied by stagnation. Conclusions : Based on the findings of this study, future researches on the efficacy and application of Cannabis could be done more systematically. In line with recent trend of wide application of medical Cannabis, we hope for it to be more actively used in the field of East Asian Medicine based on objective evidence.

CHEMICAL EFFECTS ON PWR SUMP STRAINER BLOCKAGE AFTER A LOSS-OF-COOLANT ACCIDENT: REVIEW ON U.S. RESEARCH EFFORTS

  • Industry- or regulatory-sponsored research activities on the resolution of Generic Safety Issue (GSI)-191 were reviewed, especially on the chemical effects. Potential chemical effects on the head loss across the debris-loaded sump strainer under a post-accident condition were experimentally evidenced by small-scale bench tests, integrated chemical effects test (ICET), and vertical loop head loss tests. Three main chemical precipitates were identified by WCAP-16530-NP: calcium phosphate, aluminum oxyhydroxide, and sodium aluminum silicate. The former two precipitates were also identified as major chemical precipitates by the ICETs. The assumption that all released calcium would form precipitates is reasonable. CalSil insulation needs to be minimized especially in a plant using trisodium phosphate buffer. The assumption that all released aluminum would form precipitates appears highly conservative because ICETs and other studies suggest substantial solubility of aluminum at high temperature and inhibition of aluminum corrosion by silicate or phosphate. The industry-proposed chemical surrogates are quite effective in increasing the head loss across the debris-loaded bed and more effective than the prototypical aluminum hydroxide precipitates generated by in-situ aluminum corrosion. There appears to be some unresolved potential issues related to GSI-191 chemical effects as identified in NUREG/CR-6988. The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, however, concluded that the implications of these issues are either not generically significant or are appropriately addressed, although several issues associated with downstream in-vessel effects remain.

Changes of Blood Flow Characteristics due to Catheter Obstruction during the Coronary Angioplasty

  • Catheters are used to measure translesional pressure gradients in the stenosed coronary arteries. Uses of catheters during coronary angioplasty cause flow obstructions. A narrowed flow cross section with catheter effectively introduced a tighter stenosis than the enlarged residual stenoses after balloon angiplasty. Catheters in blood vessels cause pressure gradient rise and blood flow drop during the measurements. In this study, three dimensional computer simulations are conducted to investigate the flow blockage effects due to the catheter obstructions during the coronary angioplasty. The computer simulation models are generated by the data, which are measured by coronary angiogram, and the blood is treated as non-Newtonian fluid. The velocity, pressure, and wall shear stress variations are observed for the estimate of damages of blood vessel. This study is also extended to investigate the effects of stenotic vessel size, and shape and catheter size and location.
