In this paper, we proposed an temporal error concealment (EC) using the proposed boundary matching method and the adaptive block matching method. The proposed boundary matching method improves the spatial correlation of the macroblocks (MBs) by reusing the pixels of the concealed MB to estimate a motion vector of a error MB. The adaptive block matching method inspects the horizontal edge and the vertical edge feature of a error MB surroundings, and it conceals the error MBs in reference to more stronger edge feature. This improves video quality by raising edge connection feature of the error MBs and the neighborhood MBs. In particular, we restore a lost MB as the unit of 8${\times}$16 block or 16${\times}$8 block by using edge feature from the surrounding macroblocks. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm gives better results than the conventional algorithms from a subjective and an objective viewpoint.
In this paper, we present an algorithm for synthesizing intermediate views from a stereoscopic pair of images. Syntheses of intermediate images allows one to realize a more comfortable the 3D display system. The proposed method is based on block matching, which is not ordinarily used. The contour information is used for a block decision. In order to find an equivalent (or corresponding) block, there are two steps: "matching of contour-to-original image" and "matching of contour-to-contour image" methods. "Matching of contour-to-contour image" uses both left and right contour images. This block matching method allows us to find the corresponding block in spite of different block sizes. Experimental results illustrate the performance of the proposed technique and we obtained a high quality image of more than 31 dB PSNR.image of more than 31 dB PSNR.
This paper introduces a new local feature extraction method and image matching method for the localization and classification of targets. Proposed method is based on the block-by-block projection associated with directional pattern of blocks. Each pattern has its own eigen-vertors called as CEBs(Classified Eigen-Blocks). Also proposed block-based image matching method is robust to translation and occlusion. Performance of proposed feature extraction and matching method is verified by the face localization and FLIR-vehicle-image classification test.

Each pixel in a matching block does not equally contribute to block matching and the matching error is greatly affected by image complexity. On the basis of the facts, this paper proposes a fast motion estimation algorithm using some sub-blocks selected by the image complexity. The proposed algorithm divides a matching block into 16 sub-blocks, computes the image complexity in every sub-block, executes partial block matching using some sub-blocks with large complexity, and detects a motion vector. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm brings about negligible image degradation, but can reduce a large amount of computation in comparison with conventional algorithms.

By modeling the block matching algorithm as a function of the correlation of image blocks, we derive search patterns for fast block matching motion estimation. The proposed approach provides an analytical support lot the diamond-shape search pattern, which is widely used in fast block matching algorithms. We also propose a new fast motion estimation algorithm using adaptive search patterns and statistical properties of the object displacement. In order to select an appropriate search pattern, we exploit the relationship between the motion vector and the block differences. By changing the search pattern adaptively, we improve motion prediction accuracy while reducing required computational complexity compared to other fast block matching algorithms.
Stereo matching is an important technique in the are of computer vision. There are already many theorems to find disparity map using stereo images. Usually, disparity is searched by using block matching. However block matching result in blocking effects caused by using fixed size window for computing pixel correlations. This paper suggests an efficient method to remove the blocking effect in stereo matching procedures.

This paper proposes the fast partial difference elimination (PDE) algorithm. When the conventional PDE cannot skip the rest of matching procedure in a candidate block using a partial matching error, the proposed algorithm estimates to skip it again using the block matching error predicted from the computed partial matching error. The proposed algorithm can eliminate impossible candidate blocks earlier than the conventional PDE since the predicted block matching error is always bigger than the partial matching error. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the computations while keeping image quality as good as the conventional PDE.
In this paper, Enhanced binary block matching method for Constrained one-bit transform (C1BT) based motion estimation is proposed. Binary motion estimation exploits the Number of non-matched points (NNMP) as a block matching criterion instead of the Sum of Absolute Differences (SAD) for low complex motion estimation. The motion estimation using SAD could use the smaller block for more accurate motion estimation. In this paper the enhanced binary block matching method using smaller motion estimation block for C1BT is proposed to the more accurate binary matching. Experimental results shows that the proposed algorithm has better Peak Signal to Noise Ration (PSNR) results compared with conventional binary transform algorithms.

To reduce huge computation in the block matching, this paper proposes a fast block matching algorithm which limits search points in the search area. On the basis of two facts that most motion vectors are located in central part of search area and matching error is monotonic decreasing toward the best similar block, the proposed algorithm moves a matching pattern between steps by the one pixel, predicts the motion direction for the best similar block from similar blocks decided in previous steps, and limits movements of search points to ${\pm}45^{\circ}C$ on it. As a result, it could remove the needless search points and reduce the block matching computation. In comparison with the conventional similar algorithms, the proposed algorithm caused the trivial image degradation in images with fast motion but kept the equivalent image quality in images with normal motion, and it, meanwhile, reduced from about 20% to over 67% of the their block matching computation.
Motion estimation plays an important role for video coding. In this paper, we derive optimal search patterns for fast block matching motion estimation. By analyzing the block matching algorithm as a function of block shape and size, we can find an optimal search pattern for initial motion estimation. The proposed idea, which has been verified experimentally by computer simulations, can provide an analytical basis for the current MPEG-2 proposals. In order to choose a more compact search pattern for BMA, we exploit the statistical relationship between the motion and the frame difference of each block.
