  • In this paper, image compression based on neural networks is presented with block classification and coding. Multilayer neural networks with error back-propagation learning algorithm are used to transform the normalized image date into the compressed hidden values by reducing spatial redundancies. Image compression can basically be achieved with smaller number of hidden neurons than the numbers of input and output neurons. Additionally, the image blocks can be grouped for adaptive compression rates depending on the characteristics of the complexity of the blocks in accordance with the sensitivity of the human visual system(HVS). The quantized output of the hidden neuron can also be entropy coded for an efficient transmission. In computer simulation, this approach lie in the good performances even with images outside the training set and about 25:1 compression rate was achieved using the entropy coding without much degradation of the reconstructed images.

  • This study is carried out to analyze transition about educational facilities of elementary schools with the change of policy and to find out a developmental direction for qualitative improvement. An analysis of blueprints is done to 34 elementary schools representing periodic characteristics after the 1960's. As a result, various cases were shown in arrangement type, unit space, block planning and plane planning of the schools after a abolition of law about the standardization of educational facilities on 1997, however, they were showing a tendency to simplify after the introduction of BTL on 2005. Spatial composition factors were very various in the schools planned from the middle of 1990's to the early of 2000's. Meanwhile, nearly fifty percent of occupying ratio about learning space in the schools of standard type was gradually decreased by modernization planning on 1990's. However, it was increased a little again after the BTL. In case of living area, the occupying ratio was comparatively high in the schools having characteristics of 1990's and it also tends to increase after the introduction of BTL.

  • We propose a novel monitoring system for diagnosing crack faults of the wind turbine using image information. The proposed method classifies a normal state and a abnormal state for the blade parts of the wind turbine. Specifically, the images are input to the proposed system in various states of wind turbine rotation. according to the blade condition. Then, the video of rotating blades on the wind turbine is divided into several image frames. Motion vectors are estimated using the previous and current images using the motion estimation, and the change of the motion vectors is analyzed according to the blade state. Finally, we determine the final blade state using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. In SVM, features are constructed using the area information of the blades and the motion vector values. The experimental results showed that the proposed method had high classification performance and its $F_1$ score was 0.9790.

  • In order to block mobile junk messages automatically, many studies on spam filters have applied machine learning algorithms. Most previous research focused only on the accuracy rate of spam filters from the view point of the algorithm used, not on individual user's preferences. In terms of individual taste, the spam filters implemented on a mobile device have the advantage over spam filters on a network node, because it deals with only incoming messages on the users' phone and generates no additional traffic during the filtering process. However, a spam filter on a mobile phone has to consider the consumption of resources, because energy, memory and computing ability are limited. Moreover, as time passes an increasing number of feature words are likely to exhaust mobile resources. In this paper we propose a spam filter model distributed between a users' computer and smart phone. We expect the model to follow personal decision boundaries and use the uniform resources of smart phones. An authorized user's computer takes on the more complex and time consuming jobs, such as feature selection and training, while the smart phone performs only the minimum amount of work for filtering and utilizes the results of the information calculated on the desktop. Our experiments show that the accuracy of our method is more than 95% with Na$\ddot{i}$ve Bayes and Support Vector Machine, and our model that uses uniform memory does not affect other applications that run on the smart phone.

  • The problem of blocking artifacts is very common in block-based image and video compression, especially at very low bit rates. In this paper, we propose a post-processing method for JPEG-coded image deblocking via sparse representation and adaptive residual threshold. This method includes three steps. First, we obtain the dictionary by online dictionary learning and the compressed images. The dictionary is then modified by the histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) feature descriptor and K-means cluster. Second, an adaptive residual threshold for orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) is proposed and used for sparse coding by combining blind image blocking assessment. At last, to take advantage of human visual system (HVS), the edge regions of the obtained deblocked image can be further modified by the edge regions of the compressed image. The experimental results show that our proposed method can keep the image more texture and edge information while reducing the image blocking artifacts.

  • This paper proposes a method to detect LP(License Plate) of vehicles in indoor and outdoor parking lots. In restricted environment, there are many conventional methods for detecting LP. But, it is difficult to detect LP in natural and complex scenes with background clutters because several patterns similar with text or LP always exist in complicated backgrounds. To verify the performance of LP text detection in natural images, we apply MB-LGP feature by combining with ensemble machine learning algorithm in purpose of selecting optimal features of small number in huge pool. The feature selection is performed by adaptive boosting algorithm that shows great performance in minimum false positive detection ratio and in computing time when combined with cascade approach. MSER is used to provide initial text regions of vehicle LP. Throughout the experiment using real images, the proposed method functions robustly extracting LP in natural scene as well as the controlled environment.

  • Screen splitting is one of the fundamental tasks in different methods including video and image compression, screen classification, screen content coding and the like. These methods in turn support various applications in data communications, remote screen sharing, remote desktop delivery to assist teaching-learning, telemedicine, Desktop as a Service etc. In the literature we find systems requiring splitting assumes a fixed size split that do not change dynamically, also there is no analysis why that split is chosen in terms of performance. By doing mathematical analysis this paper first finds the efficient splitting schemes that can be easily automated to make a system adaptive. Thereafter, taking the screen motion detection as a case study, it demonstrates the effects of various splitting methods on motion detection performance. The simulation results clearly shows how classification performances varies with different splitting which will facilitate to choose the best splitting for a specific application scenario as well as making the system adaptive by providing dynamic splitting.

  • As natural language processing technology using machine learning develops, a Smart Home Network Service (SHNS) is drawing attention again. However, it is difficult to apply a standardized authentication scheme for SHNS because of the diversity of components and the variability of users. Blockchain is proposed for data authentication in a distributed environment. But there is a limit to applying it to SHNS due to the computational overhead required when implementing a proof-of-work system. In this paper, a lightweight work proof system is proposed. The proposed lightweight proof-of-work system is proposed to manage block generation by controlling the work authority of the device. In addition, this paper proposes an access control scheme for SHNS.

  • Palmprint recognition has drawn increasingly attentions in the past decade due to its uniqueness and reliability. Traditional palmprint recognition methods usually use high-resolution images as the identification basis so that they can achieve relatively high precision. However, high-resolution images mean more computation cost in the recognition process, which usually cannot be guaranteed in mobile computing. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved low-resolution palmprint image recognition method based on residual networks. The main contributions include: 1) We introduce a channel attention mechanism to refactor the extracted feature maps, which can pay more attention to the informative feature maps and suppress the useless ones. 2) The ResStage group structure proposed by us divides the original residual block into three stages, and we stabilize the signal characteristics before each stage by means of BN normalization operation to enhance the feature channel. Comparison experiments are conducted on a public dataset provided by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieve a rank-1 accuracy of 98.17% when tested on low-resolution images with the size of 12dpi, which outperforms all the compared methods obviously.
