A portable recoilless guided missile generates a strong back blast and impulsive noise at the nozzle when it launches. In the case of indoor operations, the hazard of the blast noise from a recoilless weapon increases due to limited indoor spaces. Also, the noise levels determine the operational feasibility of a weapon; therefore, it is important to predict the blast noise levels distribution in the indoor space in advance. In addition, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method generally used for fluid related simulations, requires high computing cost and time to simulate the whole domains. The domain includes both blast wave region and large and various indoor space region. Therefore, an efficient method for predicting the far-field noise level within a short time should be developed. This paper describes an analysis model for predicting the indoor noise distributions by considering the shape effect of the building within a short time. A new developed blast wave model was implemented using the noise source. Additionally, noise reflections at the closed surfaces such as walls and noise transmissions at the opened surfaces such as windows and doors were considered in calculating the noise levels. The predicted noise levels were compared with the experimental data obtained from the indoor launch test to validate the reliability of program.

In this study, numerical analysis was carried out on a complex pressure field of blast waves caused by the detonation of high explosives in various environments. The generated blast waves propagated in the air, upon the sudden release of high energy induced by the explosion. Reflected waves were created when the pressure waves encountered certain obstacles such as the ground or the walls of structures. The propagation of the blast waves and its interaction with the reflected waves were simulated. An adaptive mesh refinement was applied to improve the efficiency of distribution of computer resource, for the computational calculation of the blast wave propagation in a wide open space. In addition, the integration of the calculation domains for the explosive and air were considered when the maximum density of the explosive region was below critical value. The results were verified by comparison with the pressure time history from blast wave experiments performed under two topographical conditions.

Owing to the recent increase in the frequency of explosion accidents, blast resistive design has garnered attention to reduce the damage of important structural elements. However, domestic research on the blast resistive structures is still insufficient, and domestic design guideline against blast loads are not documented yet. In this study, a numerical study on the RC blast resistive walls, where the test variable was the presence of FRP sheet, was performed using LS-DYNA program. Based on the numerical results, displacement-time hysteretic curve, pressure-impulse diagram, and fragility curve of the test specimens were derived. It was shown that the FRP sheet strengthening method is efficient to improve the blast resistive performance of the RC wall. Also, the strengthening effect of FRP sheet on the RC wall was stronger when the magnitude of the blast load was greater.

More than 70% of the accidents that occur on offshore installations stem from hydrocarbon explosions and fires, which, because they involve blast effects and heat, are extremely hazardous and have serious consequences in terms of human health, structural safety, and the surrounding environment. Blast barriers are integral structures in a typical offshore topside module to protect personnel and safety critical equipment by preventing the escalation of events caused by hydrocarbon explosions. Many researchers have shown the adequacy of the simple design tool commonly used by the offshore industry for the analysis and design of blast walls. However, limited information is available for corrugated blast wall design with explosion impact response characteristics. Therefore, this paper presents a parametric study on the explosion impact response characteristics of an offshore installation's stainless steel corrugated blast wall. This paperalso investigates and recommends design parameters for the structural design of a corrugated blast wall based on a nonlinear structural analysis of experiential results.

Permeable polymer concrete can be applied to roads, sidewalks, river embankments, drain pipes, conduits, retaining walls, yards, parking lots, plazas, interlocking blocks, etc. This study was to explore a possibility of using blast furnace slag powder and stone dust of industrial by-products as fillers for Eco-permeable polymer concrete. Different mix proportions were tried to find an optimum mix proportion of the Ecopermeable polymer concrete. The tests were carried out at $20{\pm}1^{circ}C$ and $60{\pm}2\%$ relative humidity. At 7 days of curing, unit weight, coefficient of permeability, dynamic modulus of elasticity, compressive, flexural and splitting tensile strengths ranged between $1,821{\~}1,955 kg/m^{3}$, $0.056{\~}0.081\;cm/s$, $114{\times}0^{2}{\~}157{\times}10^{2}\;MPa,\;17.6{\~}24.7\;MPa,\;5.98{\~}7.94\;MPa\;and\;3.43{\~}4.70\;MPa$, respectively. It was concluded that the blast furnace slag powder and stone dust can be used in the Eco-permeable polymer concrete.
This paper addresses two main issues relevant to the structural assessment of buildings subjected to explosions. The first issue regards the robustness evaluation of steel frame structures: a procedure is provided for computing "robustness curves" and it is applied to a 20-storey steel frame building, describing the residual strength of the (blast) damaged structure under different local damage levels. The second issue regards the precise evaluation of blast pressures acting on structural elements using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) techniques. This last aspect is treated with particular reference to gas explosions, focusing on some critical parameters (room congestion, failure of non-structural walls and ignition point location) which influence the development of the explosion. From the analyses, it can be deduced that, at least for the examined cases, the obtained robustness curves provide a suitable tool that can be used for risk management and assessment purposes. Moreover, the variation of relevant CFD analysis outcomes (e.g., pressure) due to the variation of the analysis parameters is found to be significant.
With the recent increase in gas energy use, risk management for explosion accidents has been emphasized. Protective walls can be used to reduce damage from explosions. The KOSHA GUIDE D-65-2018 suggests the minimum thickness and height of protective walls, minimum reinforcement diameter, and maximum spacing of reinforcements for the structural safety of the protective walls. However, no related evidence has been presented. In this study, the blast load carrying capacity of the protective wall was analyzed by the pressure-impulse diagrams while changing the yield strength of the reinforcement, concrete compressive strength, reinforcement ratio, protective wall height, and thickness, to check the adequacy of the KOSHA GUIDE. Results show that failure may occur even with design based on the criteria presented by KOSHA GUIDE. In order to achieve structural safety of protective walls, additional criteria for minimum reinforcement yield strength and maximum height of protective wall are suggested for inclusion in KOSHA GUIDE. Moreover, the existing value for minimum reinforcement ratio and the thickness of the protective wall should be increased.

This paper presents two-step simulations to calculate the influence of blast-induced pressures on explosion-protection valves installed at the boundary between a protection facility and a tunnel entering the facility. The first step is to calculate the respective overpressure on the entrance and exit of the tunnel when an explosion occurs near the tunnel entrance and exit to approach the protection facility. Secondly, the blast pressures on the explosion-protection valves mounted to walls located near the tunnel inside approaching the protection facility are analyzed with a 0.1 ms time variation using the results obtained from the first-step calculations. The following conclusions could be derived as a results: (1) The analysis of the entrance tunnel scenario, P1, leads to the maximum overpressure of 47 kPa, approximately a half of the ambient pressure, at the inner entrance due to the effect of blast barrier. For the scenario, P2, the case not blocked by the barrier, the maximum overpressure is 628 kPa, which is relatively high, namely, 5.2 times the ambient pressure. (2) It is observed that the pressure for the entrance tunnel is effectively mitigated because the initial blast pressures are partially offset from each other according to the geometry of the entrance and a portion of the pressures is discharged to the outside.
Equivalent Single-Degree-of-Freedom(SDOF) analysis, most used for blast-resistant design, does not consider the effects of gravity load on the performance evaluation of blast resistance of structural members. However, since there exists gravity load on columns and walls of structures, the blast resistance of structural members should be evaluated considering gravity load on them. In this paper, an approach to reflect the gravity load effects on the equivalent SDOF analysis for dynamic blast response of structural members is proposed. For this purpose, the parametric studies using finite element analysis were performed by varying maximum blast load, blast load duration, and gravity load with constant the resistance and natural period of a structural member. The finite element analysis results were compared with the equivalent SDOF analysis results and the blast response of the structure member was estimated by conducting finite element analyses for various gravity loads. Finally, a graphical solution for ductility of a structural member with the variables of blast load, gravity load and structural member properties was developed. The blast response of structural members under gravity load could be estimated reasonably and easily by using this graphical solution.
