  • In this paper, a procedure is presented to optimize ship propulsion systems considering the hull- propeller-engine interactions. The propeller diameter and expanded blade ratio are systematically varied to find out the optimum combinations of RPM and BHP at a given design speed by considering cavitation criteria, and then by comparing the fuel oil consumptions of each main engine candidates which can produce each combination of RPM and BHP, appropriate main engine with the lowest fuel oil consumption together with principal characteristics of the optimum propeller are selected.

  • The hovercraft is the amphibious hovercraft. Design and manufacturing companies of the aero propeller exist rarely in the world. Hence the propeller has beef designed and manufactured by manufacturing companies which make aero propeller mainly. In this paper, the hovercraft propeller of similar, which is building and designing by HHIC, is considered the type of aero propeller, rotational speed, diameter, number of blades, Open air propeller efficiency. As the result of check, hovercraft which is necessary huge static thrust is needed the ducted propeller in order to improve climbing capacity. However, the number of blades and turning direction almost do not affect.

  • For the optimal design of an automotive blower system, effects of the scroll cut-off starting angle, the clearance between blade tip and bellmouth, and the scroll expansion angle on the performance of sirocco fan are investigated experimentally. Best performance is achieved at fan exposure ratio $\Deltae/r_c$,/TEX> =1.0, and clearance ratio $\DeltaeC/C=0.62. Flow characteristics inside sirocco fan are also studied by using LDV. Flow patterns in the inside of fan can be classified into three regions. Velocity vector has the same direction as rotational direction of fan at 0~$120^{\circ}$, toward the fan blades at 150~$180^{\circ}$, and opposite direction at 210~$330^{\circ}$. Turbulent intensity is relatively high near the cut-off edge in the scroll housing.

  • Flows through impellers of centrifugal compressors are calculated by a streamline curvature method. A method for the exit boundary condition is suggested in the present paper. Flow angles are assumed to be deviated from the blade angle parabolically. The maximum deviation is adjusted for the whole angular momentum to balance with the empirically estimated value by using Stanitz' slip-factor. The present method is verified to reasonably simulate flows through the impeller, when the 3-dimensionality of the flow is not strong. It is also shown that the method can be applied for the design of the splitter in the impeller.

  • The cooling of data centers has emerged as a significant challenge as the density of IT equipment increased. With the rapid increasing of heat load and cooling system, predictions for electronics power trends have been closely watched. A data center power density projection is needed so that IT organizations can develop data centers with adequate cooling for reasonable lifetimes. This paper will discuss the need for something more than processor and equipment power trend projections which have overestimated the required infrastructure for customers. This projection will use data from a survey of actual enterprise data centers and the ASHRAE projections to formulate a data center server heat load trend projection.

  • Propeller blades have complex airfoil section type geometry and the thickness is continuously varied to both its length and cord-wise direction. in the present research, the finite element analysis program PROSTEC (Propeller Stress Evaluation Code) is developed to calculate the structural responses of propeller blades in irregular ship wake field. To represent the curved and skewed geometry of propeller blades accurately, 20-node curved solid element using the quadratic shape function is adopted. Input data for the analysis including the geometry and pressure distribution of propeller blades can be generated automatically from the propeller design program. And to visualize the results of analysis on windows system conveniently, the post processor PROSTEC-POST is developed.

  • In the present study, a transient incompressible viscous turbulent flow is simulated for the automotive torque converter with moving mesh technique. For the analysis, entire torque converter flow passages are modeled. Computed torque ratio, capacity factor and efficiency show a good agreement with the experiment data. The flow instabilities characterized by back-flow and wake etc. appeared in some cascade passages are shown to be propagating along tangential direction. These flow patterns are mainly influenced by the pump and turbine blade passing and can't be predicted through conventional steady simulation with a mixing plane approach. The understanding of the unsteady flow characteristics in a torque converter achieved in the present study may lead to the optimal design of a torque converter.

  • This paper is written for the development of boiler combustion air control algorithm of coal-fired power plant by the steps of design, coding and test. The control algorithms were designed in the shape of cascade control for two parts of air master, forced draft fan pitch blade by standard function blocks. This control algorithms were coded to the control programs of distributed control systems under development. The simulator for coal-fired power plant was used in the test step and automatic control, sequence control and emergency stop tests were performed successfully like the tests of the actual power plant. The reliability will be obtained enough to apply to actual site if the total test has been completed in the state that all algorithms were linked mutually. It is expected that the project result will contribute to the safe operation of domestic power plant and the self-reliance of coal-fired power plant control technique.

  • Numerical analysis of three-dimensional vicous flow is used to compute the design speed operating line of a transonic axial-flow compressor. The Navier-Stokes equation was solved by an explicit finite-difference numerical scheme and the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model was applied. A spatially-varying time-step and an implicit residual smoothing were used to improve convergence. Two-stage axial compressor of a turboshaft engine developed KARI was chosen for the analysis. Numerical results show reasonably good agreements with experimental measurements made by KARI. Numerical solutions indicate that there exist a strong shock-boundary layer interaction and a subsequent large flow separation. It is also observed that the shock is moved ahead of the blade passage at near-stall condition.
