Sedimentary rocks from construction waste are discarded through open storage and landfilling, which causes an increase in construction cost and inefficient of execution of works. Some sandstone are selected and utilized as aggregates, but shale is buried as industrial waste. Therefore, in this research, we evaluated weathering properties of shale aggregate that is widely distributed throughout Daegu-Kyeongbuk region and freeze-thaw characteristics of concrete according to the replacement ratio of shale aggregate, in an effort to stabilize aggregate supply-demand in Daegu-Kyeongbuk region and develop alternative aggregates. We used red shale and black shale in the experiment, which were exported from a construction site in Deagu. We verified the usage of shale as a concrete aggregate by comparing andesite, which is broadly used as a thick aggregate for concrete, to hornfels, which is a metamorphic sedimentary rock. As a result of the experiment, we observed no degradation phenomenon for andesite and hornfels. However, a part of country rock containing black shale was found to be exfoliated. Red shale started having cracks in the direction of stratification after 1.5 months of direct exposure, and it broke into smaller pieces after approximately 4 months. After 300 cycles of freeze-thaw process on the concrete manufactured according to the replacement ratio of shale aggregate, the modulus of elasticity was 97% for plain and 95% for hornfels. In the case of RS_100, it was 57% after 210 cycles, and for BS_100, it was 54% after 240 cycles. Therefore, we established that, as the number of repetition increases, the freeze-thaw resistance decreases dramatically.

The purpose of this study is to investigate properties of unsaturated polyester mortar using the shale as find aggregates. To evaluate properties of unsaturated polyester mortar using crushed sand from Black shale, Red shale, Gray shale, we peformed the experiment according the F/B ratio of 25, 30, 35% and the volume of fine aggregate of 50, 53, 56%. The Result of this study is as follows. the strength of unsaturated polyester mortar is higher than those of river sand. The F/B ratio is higher and the volume of find aggregate is lower, the strength of unsaturated polyester mortar is higher
This study is investigated for the trace element concentration in the soils derived from different parent rocks, which are serpentinites, metamorphic rocks and black shales, and the absorption of the trace element by Pinus rigida in Hongseong and Keumsan, Chungnam, respectively. The concentrations of nickel, chrominium and cobalt are high in the serpentinites, whereas the concentrations of zinc, molybdenium and iron are high in the metamorphic rocks. These elements in black shale are lower than those in serpentinites and metamorphic rocks. The serpentine soils show high nickel, chrominium and cobalt content, while zinc and iron content are high in the mixed soils(serpentinites + metamorphic rocks) and black shales. Comparing with parent rocks, all of trace elements in their weathered soils are low. The pH of serpentine soil is high, 7.73~9.55 and that of black shale soil in 5.61. In serpentine area, the absorptions of chrominium by P. rigida is lower than its in the soils. The absorption of zinc by P. rigida is high relative to zinc concentration in soils. The Co/Ni and Fe/Ni quotient in P. rigida over serpentine soils are considerably lower than those growing over other soils tpes.
The chiastolite bearing shale was known to occur in various coal fields in South Korea among which the Kangneung coal fields is the most outstanding in quality and quantity of chiastolite. The chiastolite occurs mostly in black shales of Sadong formation and little in shales of Hongjom and Kobangsan formations, and is most abundant in the footwall coaly shales of the Sadong coal seams. The chiastolite has been proved to be thermal contact product of the high aluminous shale that comes into contact with Kangneung granite. The distribution of chiastolite in the Kangneung coal field is irregular. The eastern part of the region contains more chiastolite than that of western part. It is believed that the difference of the grade is due to the intensity of metamorphism. The grade of chiastolite in the shale varies from few percent up to as high as 60 % in volume, and the minable reserve of the chiastolite is estimated about 4,700,000 tons. This reserves is rather concentrated in few localities such as in Jiam Mine, Jungrim Mine, Sir 1 Hang in the Whasung Mine, the second and third sections of Kangneung Mine and Umbuelri district. The chemical composition of chiastolite bearing coaly shale is $SiO_2$, 35.0%; $Al_2O_3$, 27.0%; $Fe_2O_3$, 0.29%.

Sedimentary rocks dug up in construction fields are mostly stockpiled for landfill disposal, leading to an increase in construction costs and construction inefficiency. After screening, some of the sandstone can be used as aggregate; however, most of the shale ends up as industrial waste in practice. In this study, to stabilize the demand and develop resources for alternative aggregates of concrete, the potential use of shale, which is widely distributed in the Daegu-Kyeongbuk region, as a concrete aggregate was evaluated. Red and black shale exported from a Daegu excavation site was selected for use in the experiments and evaluated by comparing with hornfels, which is widely used as a coarse aggregate and is a type of andesite and metamorphosed sedimentary rock. The physical properties of the aggregate were evaluated in accordance with the test methods of KS F 2527 "crushed concrete aggregate," and the compressive strength against the shale aggregate replacement ratio was measured. The compressive strength of the concrete after 28 days was 30.8 MPa when the black shale replaced 100% of the aggregate in the concrete and 31.1 MPa when the red shale replaced 100% of the aggregate in the concrete. Compared with the compressive strength of 37.5 MPa for concrete prepared by using plain aggregate, using shale as a substitute for the aggregate produced an average compressive strength that was 82% of normal concrete.

Soil and rock were yielded during construction of subway in Taegu. Produced rock is a kind of a sedimentary rock with low strength and low durability of shrinkage. So it is difficult using for resources engineering. But in our country, it is very important to use material resources due to lack of natural resources. In this study, after cracking sedimentary rock like black shale and red shale, they are compared with granite which usually used road constriction field to investigate property of use for road construction. Consequently, the engineering character of origin rock is satisfactory, but the soundness test, black shale and red shale are less than KS 12.9%, 37.5% respectively. The result of concrete freezing-thawing test shows that the strength among three materials is not a wide difference but red shale has relatively low strength. The result of asphalt freezing-thawing test with 50 cycles indicates that the stability of red shale in lower than KS 484~561kg on base course, 336~375kg on surface course respectively. A further research should be needed for propriety to the material of shale.
The geology of the mine consists of Cretaceous lower andesitic breccia member, tuffaceous black shale, upper tuffaceous sandstone member and andesitic dike. Ore bodies are two parallel veins of breccia originated from hydrothermal activity of later acidic igneous intrusion. First two periods of mineralization, gold and silver, and copper, and later copper enrichment was identified. The first two might have been occurred during boiling of hydrothermal solution that formed breccia and copper enrichment was accomplished by enhancement of $CO_2$ fugacity from the organic material contained in the black shale. With all the geologic and mineralogic data and inferences attained from other investigators it was estimated that the optimum depth of the ore mineralization was between 500m and 300m below the surface of Kyong-Sang series.
3D magnetic inversion, based on the assemblage of 2D forward modeling and inversion as a practical technique to reflect the a priori information, was conducted to investigate the spatial distribution features of black-shale related and pyrometamorphic uranium deposit and several lithological units of Ogcheon Super Group in an area of Geumsan. By using the 3D visualization technique with suitable susceptibility interval and horizontal slice map, the spatial distribution of magnetic susceptibility corresponded to the black shale related uranium bearing lithological units, Black Slate member was well coincided with a information of uranium deposit. Also, even though it is indirect indicator for the detetction of uranium deposits interbedded in Gray Hornfels member, spatial susceptibility distribution which shows the south-east magnetic linearment corresponding to the Majeon-ri formation and Dark Gray Slate were matched well. From this investigation, we inferred that maximum depth extension which Black Slate member can be separately recognized with respect to adjacent Dark Gray Slate with strong magnetic susceptibility anomaly is about 150m with reference elevation level of 306m. In addition, Majeon-ri formation located south of Black Slate member revels relatively high magnetic susceptibility range but shows high spatial susceptibility fluctation. And, as an intrusive rocks, Jurassic Biotite Granite shows relatively low magnetic susceptibility characteristics. On the contrary, Cretaceous granite distributed in soutthern part of the study area shows the relatively high susceptibility distribution.

Concentrations of several heavy metals in soils derived from black shale and slate have been reported to be higher than the average concentrations in non-polluted soils. This study describes and characterizes soil minerals, and investigates the distribution of heavy metals in soils, and then examines their relationship. Soils in the study area are mainly consist of guartz and feldspars with minor amount of kaolin, illite, vermiculite, chlorite and illite-vermiculite interstratified minerals. Mineral compositions are similar in mountain-, farmland-, and paddy-soils. The residual soils derived from sandy phyllites contain less illites than those from black shale and black slate. Heavy metals appear to be more concentrated in soils than in rocks. The concentrate ratios in soils to rocks ranges 1.1 times for Cr, 2 for Cu, 1.4 for Ni. The contour maps of Cd, Zn, Pb, Cu contents using 0.43N $HNO_3$-extraction imply that these elements are highly concentrated in the soils near the past uranium exploration region, coal seams, black slate beds and tailings than other parts of the study area. The proportions of the day in most soils are less than 10%. In spite of small proportions of the clay, the concentrations of heavy metals from clay fractions to the total concentrations are high: 1~2.4 times for Co, 1.4~2.5 for Cu, 1.2~2.6 for Ni, 1~5 for Pb, 1~2.7 for Zn and 1.6~1.8 for Cr and V. The contents of organic carbons in clay fractions are also 1.5~3.9 times higher than in silt and sand fractions. Cu, Pb and organic carbons show positive relationship in all size fractions. In the size-fractionated soil profile samples, the contents of heavy metals and organic carbons show analogous trends with depth. For the clay fractions of soil profile samples, the contents of heavy metals with depth have analogous trends to abundances of vermiculites, which have the high CEC in main clay minerals.
