  • The state-of-the-art video-based point cloud compression(V-PCC) has a high efficiency of compressing 3D point cloud by projecting points onto 2D images. These images are then padded and compressed by High-Efficiency Video Coding(HEVC). Pixels in padded 2D images are classified into three groups including origin pixels, padded pixels and unoccupied pixels. Origin pixels are generated from projection of 3D point cloud. Padded pixels and unoccupied pixels are generated by copying values from origin pixels during image padding. For padded pixels, they are reconstructed to 3D space during geometry reconstruction as well as origin pixels. For unoccupied pixels, they are not reconstructed. The rate distortion optimization(RDO) used in HEVC is mainly aimed at keeping the balance between video distortion and video bitrates. However, traditional RDO is unreliable for padded pixels and unoccupied pixels, which leads to significant waste of bits in geometry reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a new RDO scheme which takes 3D-Distortion into account instead of traditional video distortion for padded pixels and unoccupied pixels. Firstly, these pixels are classified based on the occupancy map. Secondly, different strategies are applied to these pixels to calculate their 3D-Distortions. Finally, the obtained 3D-Distortions replace the sum square error(SSE) during the full RDO process in intra prediction and inter prediction. The proposed method is applied to geometry frames. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves an average of 31.41% and 6.14% bitrate saving for D1 metric in Random Access setting and All Intra setting on geometry videos compared with V-PCC anchor.

  • In hybrid block-based video coding, transform coding converts spatial domain residual signals into frequency domain data and concentrates energy in a low frequency band to achieve a high compression efficiency in entropy coding. The state-of-the-art video coding standard, VVC(Versatile Video Coding), uses DCT-2(Discrete Cosine Transform type 2), DST-7(Discrete Sine Transform type 7), and DCT-8(Discrete Cosine Transform type 8) for primary transform. In this paper, considering that DCT-2, DST-7, and DCT-8 are all linear transformations, we propose an inverse transform that reduces the number of multiplications in the inverse transform by using the linearity of the linear transform. The proposed inverse transform method reduced encoding time and decoding time by an average 26%, 15% in AI and 4%, 10% in RA without the increase of bitrate compared to VTM-8.2.

  • Netflix, Amazon Prime, and YouTube are the most popular and fastest-growing streaming services globally. It is a matter of great interest for the streaming service providers to preview their service infrastructure and streaming strategy in order to provide new streaming services. Hence, the first part of the paper presents a detailed survey of the Content Distribution Network (CDN) and cloud infrastructure of these service providers. To understand the streaming strategy of these service providers, the second part of the paper deduces a common quality-of-service (QoS) model based on rebuffering time, bitrate, progressive download ratio, and standard deviation of the On-Off cycle. This model is then used to analyze and compare the streaming behaviors of these services. This study concluded that the streaming behaviors of all these services are similar as they all use Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) on top of TCP. However, the amount of data that they download in the buffering state and steady-state vary, resulting in different progressive download ratios, rebuffering levels, and bitrates. The characteristics of their On-Off cycle are also different resulting in different QoS. Hence a thorough adaptive bit rate (ABR) analysis is presented in this paper. The streaming behaviors of these services are tested on different access network bandwidths, ranging from 75 kbps to 30 Mbps. The survey results indicate that Netflix QoS and streaming behavior are significantly consistent followed by Amazon Prime and YouTube. Our approach can be used to compare and contrast the streaming services' strategies and finetune their ABR and flow control mechanisms.

  • One of the existing terrestrial multi-channel DTV service frameworks, called KoreaView, provides four programs, composed of MPEG-2 based one HD video and H.264/AVC based three SD videos within one single 6MHz frequency bandwidth. However the additional 3 SD videos can not provide enough quality due to its reduced spatial resolution and low target bitrates. In this paper, we propose a framework, which is called a terrestrial multi-channel high quality hybrid DTV service, to overcome such a weakness of KoreaView services. In the proposed framework, the three additional SD videos are encoded based on an H.264/SVC Spatial Base layer, which is compliant with H.264/AVC, and are delivered via broadcasting networks. On the other hand, and the corresponding three additional HD videos are encoded based on an H.264/SVC Spatial Enhancement layer, which are transmitted over broadband networks such as Internet, thus allowing the three additional videos for users with better quality of experience. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework, various experimental results are provided for real video contents being used for DTV services. First, the experimental results show that, when the SD sequences are encoded by the H.264/SVC Spatial Base layer at a target bitrate of 1.5Mbps, the resulting PSNR values are ranged from 34.5dB to 42.9dB, which is a sufficient level of service quality. Also it is noted that 690kbps-8,200kbps are needed for the HD test sequences when they are encoded in the H.264/SVC Spatial Enhancement layer at similar PSNR values for the same HD sequences encoded by MPEG-2 at a target bitrate of 12 Mbps.

  • In this paper we propose the fast CU (Coding Unit) mode decision method. To reduce computational complexity and save encoding time of HEVC, we divided CU, PU (Prediction Unit) and TU (Transform Unit) decision process into two stages. In the first stage, because $2N{\times}2N$ PU mode is mostly selected among $2N{\times}2N$, $N{\times}2N$, $2N{\times}N$, $N{\times}N$ PU modes, proposed algorithm uses only $2N{\times}2N$ PU mode deciding depth of each CU in the LCU (Largest CU). And then, proposed method decides exact PU and TU modes at the depth level which is decided in the first stage. In addition, early skip decision rule is applied to the proposed method to obtain more efficient computational complexity reduction. The proposed method reduces computational complexity of the HEVC encoder by simplifying a CU depth decision method. We could obtain about 50% computational complexity reduction in comparison with HM 3.3 HEVC reference software while bitrate compressed by the proposed algorithm increases only 2%.

  • Object-oriented analysis-synthesis coding (OOASC) subdivides each image of a sequence into a number of moving objects and estimates and compensates the motion of each object. It employs a motion parameter technique for estimating motion information of each object. The motion parameter technique employing gradient operators requires a high computational load. The main objective of this paper is to present efficient motion parameter estimation techniques using the hierarchical structure in object-oriented analysis-synthesis coding. In order to achieve this goal, this paper proposes two algorithms : hybrid motion parameter estimation method (HMPEM) and adaptive motion parameter estimation method (AMPEM) using the hierarchical structure. HMPEM uses the proposed hierarchical structure, in which six or eight motion parameters are estimated by a parameter verification process in a low-resolution image, whose size is equal to one fourth of that of an original image. AMPEM uses the same hierarchical structure with the motion detection criterion that measures the amount of motion based on the temporal co-occurrence matrices for adaptive estimation of the motion parameters. This method is fast and easily implemented using parallel processing techniques. Theoretical analysis and computer simulation show that the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) of the image reconstructed by the proposed method lies between those of images reconstructed by the conventional 6- and 8-parameter estimation methods with a greatly reduced computational load by a factor of about four.

  • Adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming technology has become an important and prevalent feature in many multimedia delivery systems, with content providers such as Netflix and Amazon using ABR streaming to increase bandwidth efficiency and provide the maximum user experience when channel conditions are not ideal. Where such systems could see improvement is in the delivery of live video with a closed loop cognitive control of video encoding. In this paper, we present streaming camera system which provides spatially and temporally adaptive video streams, learning the user's preferences in order to make intelligent scaling decisions. The system employs a hardware based H.264/AVC encoder for video compression. The encoding parameters can be configured by the user or by the cognitive system on behalf of the user when the bandwidth changes. A cognitive video client developed in this study learns the user's preferences(i.e. video size over frame rate) over time and intelligently adapts encoding parameters when the channel conditions change. It has been demonstrated that the cognitive decision system developed has the ability to control video bandwidth by altering the spatial and temporal resolution, as well as the ability to make scaling decisions.

  • Compressive sensing (CS) has drawn much interest as a new sampling technique that enables signals to be sampled at a much lower than the Nyquist rate. By noting that the block-based compressive sensing can still keep spatial correlation in measurement domain, in this paper, we propose a novel encoding technique for measurement data obtained in the block-based CS of natural image. We apply discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to decorrelate CS measurements and then assign a proper quantization scheme to those DWT coefficients. Thus, redundancy of CS measurements and bitrate of system are reduced remarkably. Experimental results show improvements in rate-distortion performance by the proposed method against two existing methods of scalar quantization (SQ) and differential pulse-code modulation (DPCM). In the best case, the proposed method gains up to 4 dB, 0.9 dB, and 2.5 dB compared with the Block-based CS-Smoothed Projected Landweber plus SQ, Block-based CS-Smoothed Projected Landweber plus DPCM, and Multihypothesis Block-based CS-Smoothed Projected Landweber plus DPCM, respectively.

  • While the broadband network and multimedia technologies have been developing, the commercial market of digital contents has also been widely spreading with recently starting IPTV. Generally, PC player can display digital contents obtained through middleware like a settop box and can only bring the informations about contents like CODEC, bitrate etc. useful for only experts. But general users want to know more optional informations like content's subject, description etc. So unlike previous PC player, we proposed a player system that can get inserted informations, namely EPG(Electronic Program Guide), without database after bringing contents to PC through settop box. In addition, we also proposed DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform) based blind watermark generating method to insert EPG informations. We can extract watermark without original image and insert robust watermark in proportion to coefficients in frequency domain. And we analyzed and parsed PSI data from MPEG-TS. So we could insert wanted information using watermark from EPG. And we composed UI by extracting EPG information from watermark interted contents. Finally we modularized whole system into the watermark insert/extract application and directshow filter based player. So we tried to design this system so that the general developer can do in a way that is easier and faster.
