The Evolution of Rigid Amorphous Fraction and Its Correlation with the Glass Transition Behavior in Semicrystalline Bisphenol-A Polycarbonate

  • The evolution of conformational constraints in bisphenol-A polycarbonate (BAPC) upon quiescent bulk crystallization was quantitatively analyzed from calorimetric study employing a rigid amorphous fraction (RAF) as an indicator of the level of conformational constraints. From the correlation between corrected crystallinity (X$\sub$c/) and total rigid fraction (f$\sub$r/), it was found that, regardless of molar mass distribution and thermal treatment conditions, semicrystalline BAPC always exhibits greater f$\sub$r/ than X$\sub$c/ maintaining a quantitative relationship of f$\sub$r/〓2X$\sub$c/ in the range of 0.0 $\sub$c/< 0.4. This directly indicates the evolution of approximately the same amount of RAF as X$\sub$c/, (i.e., RAF〓X$\sub$c/) upon bulk crystallization of BAPC. It was also found that T$\sub$g/ per se and T$\sub$g/ broadening enhance as RAF increases, and there appears to be a critical level of RAF (>0.2) needed to initiate significant changes in both quantities.

  • This syudy analyzed the main bodies, marginal space, Position of the main bodies of current textbooks in high schools and "the eriteria of reading system for textbooks" which was suggested the Department of Education and Provided some suggestions for the improvement. The research methods used for the study were both literature review and survey rdsdarch with a questionaire. Inorder to research for the main body of textbook, space of margin, the optimum position of the main body, sizes of litters, spaces between letters, words, lines, length of lines, sizes of main body and margin, and margin and position of main body were checked through a related literature review. For the questionaire experiment, a questionaire based on data drawn from analysis of current textbooks, :criteria for reading system of textbook" suggested by the Department of Education, and some suggestions for improvement by the researcher was made and used for the test, targetting 384 body and girl student in high schools.n high schools.

Evaluation of the sub-lethal toxicity of Cu, Pb, bisphenol A and polychlorinated biphenyl to the marine dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides

  • Algae are sensitive to a wide range of pollutants, and are effective bioindicators in ecotoxicity assessments. Here, we evaluated the sub-lethal sensitivity of the marine dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides upon exposure to copper (Cu), lead (Pb), bisphenol A (BPA), and Aroclor 1016 (polychlorinated biphenyl, PCB). Toxic effects were assessed by observations of the reduction in cell counts and chlorophyll a levels after exposure to each toxicant. C. polykrikoides displayed dose-dependent, sigmoidal responses when exposed to the tested chemicals. $EC_{50}$-72 h values for Cu, Pb, BPA, and PCB were 12.74, 46.70, 68.15, and $1.07mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. PCB, which is an endocrine-disrupting chemical, was the most sensitive, proving its toxic effect on the dinoflagellate. This study provides baseline data on the toxic effects of commonly used heavy metals and endocrine-disrupting chemicals to a marine dinoflagellate.

Dielectric Changes During the Curing of Epoxy Resin Based on the Diglcidyl Ether of Bisphenol A (DGEBA) with Diamine

  • The curing characteristics of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) as a curing agent were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheometrics mechanical spectrometry (RMS), and dielectric analysis (DEA). The isothermal curing kinetics measured by DSC were well represented with the generalized auto-catalytic reaction model. With the temperature sweep, the inverse relationship between complex viscosity measured by RMS and ionic conductivity obtained from DEA was established indicating that the mobility of free ions represented by the ionic conductivity in DEA measurement and the chain segment motion as revealed by the complex viscosity measured from RMS are equivalent. From isothermal curing measurements at several different temperatures, the ionic conductivity contribution was shown to be dominant in the dielectric loss factor at the early stage of cure. The contribution of the dipole relaxation in dielectric loss factor became larger as the curing further proceeded. The critical degrees of cure, at which the dipolar contribution in the dielectric loss factor starts to appear, increases as isothermal curing temperature is increased. The dielectric relaxation time at the same degree of cure was shorter for a sample cured at higher curing temperature.

  • Bisphenol A(BPA) is a monomer widely used in the manufacturing polycarbonate plastic or epoxy resin and Mancozeb (MCZ), a polymeric complex of zinc and manganese salts of ethylene bisthiocarbamate, is widely used in agriculture as fungicide, insecticide and herbcide. These chemicals have been recently known as endocrine disruptors. To investigate the effects of BPA and MCZ on LPS-induced cytokine production (TNF-${\alpha}$) in vivo, female ICR mice were administered to various concentration of these materials (BPA; 100, 500, 1000 mg/kg/day, and MCZ; 250, 500, 1000, 1500 mg/kg/day) for 30 days and serum cytokine levels were measured at 1h post LPS injection (day 32) in BPA- or MCZ-administered mice.   • Bisphenol-A (BPA), a known endocrine disruptor, is a main building block of epoxy resin which is widely used as a coating agent in residential water storage tanks. Therefore, BPA leaching from the epoxy resin may have adverse effects on human health. The possibility of BPA leaching from three epoxy resins were tested with a modified KS D 8502 method at 20, 50, 75 and $100^{\circ}C$ in deionized water and the specified test water, respectively. BPA leached to the test water was identified using GC-MS and quantified with GC-FID after a sequential extraction and concentration. The results showed that BPA leaching has occurred in all three samples tested. The quantify of BPA leaching from unit area of epoxy resin coating was in the range of $10.677{\sim}273.120{\mu}g/m^2$ for sample A, 29.737~1734.045 for sample B and 52.857~548.778 for sample C depending on the test temperature, respectively. In general, the amount of BPA leaching increased as the water temperature increases. This result implies a higher risk of BPA leaching to drinking water during a hot summer season. In addition, microbial growth, measured by colony forming units, in epoxy coated water tanks was higher than that in a stainless steel tank suggesting that compounds leaching from epoxy resin may support the growth of microorganisms in a residential water holding tank.

Korean Red Ginseng suppresses bisphenol A-induced expression of cyclooxygenase-2 and cellular migration of A549 human lung cancer cell through inhibition of reactive oxygen species

  • Background: Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) is a natural product with antiinflammatory and anticarcinogenic effects. We have previously reported that the endocrine-disrupting compound bisphenol A (BPA)-induced cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) via nuclear translocation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase and promoted the migration of A549. Here, in this study, we assessed the protective effect of KRG on the BPA-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and expression of COX-2 and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in A549 cells. Methods: The effects of KRG on the upregulation of ROS production and COX-2 and MMP-9 expression by BPA were evaluated by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACs) analysis, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, and western blotting. Antimigration ability by KRG was evaluated by migration assay in A549 cells. Results: KRG significantly suppressed the BPA-induced COX-2, the activity of NF-κB, the production of ROS, and the migration of A549 cells. These effects led to the downregulation of the expression of MMP-9. Conclusions: Overall, our results suggest that KRG exerts an antiinflammatory effect on BPA-treated A549 cells via the suppression of ROS and downregulation of NF-κB activation and COX-2 expression which leads to a decrease in cellular migration and MMP-9 expression. These results provide a new possible therapeutic application of KRG to protect BPA-induced possible inflammatory disorders.

Recent research from our laboratory has shown that SPA disrupts interaction between thyroid hormone and its receptor in a non-competitive manner, and alters the thyroid-hormone dependent expression of growth hormone(GH) and prolactin(PRL).   • We investigated the effects of bisphenol A (BPA), endocrine disruptor, on the mixed lymphocyte reaction and TNF-$\alpha$ production of antigen presenting cells in mice. Cells from mouse (C57BL/6) bone marrow were cultured with GM-CSF for 8 days and mature dendritic cells (DCs) were prepared. These DCs proliferation in response to Balb/c splenocytes was measured at 72 h of culture with BPA by tritiated thymidine incorporation ([3H]TdR) and [3H]TdR incorporation was determined by scintilation counting.
