Mechanisms of Uniparental Mitochondrial DNA Inheritance in Cryptococcus neoformans

  • In contrast to the nuclear genome, the mitochondrial genome does not follow Mendelian laws of inheritance. The nuclear genome of meiotic progeny comes from the recombination of both parental genomes, whereas the meiotic progeny could inherit mitochondria from one, the other, or both parents. In fact, one fascinating phenomenon is that mitochondrial DNA in the majority of eukaryotes is inherited from only one particular parent. Typically, such unidirectional and uniparental inheritance of mitochondrial DNA can be explained by the size of the gametes involved in mating, with the larger gamete contributing towards mitochondrial DNA inheritance. However, in the human fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans, bisexual mating involves the fusion of two isogamous cells of mating type (MAT) a and MAT${\alpha}$, yet the mitochondrial DNA is inherited predominantly from the MATa parent. Although the exact mechanism underlying such uniparental mitochondrial inheritance in this fungus is still unclear, various hypotheses have been proposed. Elucidating the mechanism of mitochondrial inheritance in this clinically important and genetically amenable eukaryotic microbe will yield insights into general mechanisms that are likely conserved in higher eukaryotes. In this review, we highlight studies on Cryptococcus mitochondrial inheritance and point out some important questions that need to be addressed in the future.

파리 컬렉션에 나타난 밀리터리 룩 연구 (Analysis on the Military Look of the Paris Collections)

  • This study was aimed to analyze and investigate a diversity of aesthetic values expressed in the military look designs of the Paris collections by using content analysis method to find what design characteristic and image emerged in the later 20th century. A total of 267 military look works shown in fashion magazines such as Vogue and Collezioni Donna over the period between 1996 and 2000 were collected as research data, which were classified into 5 categories such as item, silhouette, color, color coordination, fashion image. The results were summarized as follows: first, it was found that coat was the most preferred item in expressing the military look image. Second, the straight line was the most referred silhouette, which indicates that it was the most suitable silhouette in expressing he bisexual image of the military look. Third, achromatic colors such as black and white were found to be of the highest frequency, which shows that achromatic colors continued to be proposed as fashionable colors around 1996 and this influence was effected in the military look. Finally, monochromatic coordination accounted for more than half of the military look, through which it could be explained that designers utilized it greatly to make an effective expression of the masculine image.

성관계와 관련된 성적지향이 고등학생의 흡연행위에 미치는 영향 (Smoking Prevalence according to Sexual Orientation among Korean High School Students)

  • Objectives: This study was to investigate the effects of sexual orientation related to sexual intercourse on smoking behavior. Methods: The study includes 33,309 Korean high school students. Of these, 31,213 had no experience of sexual intercourse, 1,739 had sexual intercourse with the heterosexual, 191 had sex with the homosexual, and 166 had sexual intercourse with the bisex. The study used 12th(2016) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey with complex sample logistic regression. Results: Adjusted confounding variables were analyzed, and it showed that smoking behavior was higher in the group had experienced sexual intercourse. The group had homosexual intercourse (OR=1.84, 95%CI=1.31-2.57) or bisexual intercourse (OR=2.78, 95%CI=2.06-3.76) showed higher risk of smoking behavior than the group had heterosexual intercourse (OR=1.67, 95%CI=1.48-1.90 Conclusions: The study results showed sexual orientation related to sexual intercourse was associated with smoking behavior. Further follow up studies and evaluations are needed.

한국 성 소수자 건강연구에 대한 고찰 (A Study on the Health Research of Sexual Minorities in Korea)

  • This paper reviewed the past social discussion and health research results on sexual minorities to suggest a future direction. Studies have been done to increase the social inclusion of sexual minorities and promote the health of sexual minorities. However, there is still a lot of exclusive awareness of sexual minorities in Korean society, and the researchers have not identified their health status. Studies have shown that factors that hinder lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people from accessing medical services are the lack of knowledge and awareness of LGBTI people and attitudes not inclusive of LGBTI people's culture. Thus, it is necessary to identify the health status of each sexual minority type and prepare health promotion measures accordingly in national health research. In addition, it is essential to provide medical personnel with sexual minority education and introduce a sexual minority education curriculum that includes theory and practice into the health care curriculum. The result of this paper may be able to act as a guide for future operation plans in health research on sexual minorities.

남성복 컬렉션에 표현된 이미지 스타일 분석 - 2001년 S/S ~ 2010년 F/W 파리컬렉션을 중심으로 - (The analysis of the image style expressed in men's fashion collection - focusing on Paris' collection from 2001 S/S to 2010 F/W -)

  • In modern society, men are selecting dress based on physical features as well as individual taste. Through this concern with appearance, new descriptive words have appeared from time to time. Therefore this study aimed to analyze the type of image style expressed in the Paris Men's Fashion Collection during the period of 2001 S/S collections~2010 F/W collections. This study used Frequency and Chi-square tests through SPSS 12.0 program for the analysis of a total of the 1,357 materials shown from nine designers. The results were as follows. As a result of examining the image style according to chronology and season by frequency and the tendency of design works by chi-square test, in the tendency of the image style by chronology, the style emphasizing a sexy and manly appearance is preferred through the tendency that Homme Fataleism has been continually released in foreign men's fashion collections for about ten years. In the tendency of the image style by season, the image style of the Homme Fataleism was highly published in SS and FW season except for SS in 2004 and 2008. In the tendency of design works by chronology and season, the H-silhouette was highly preferred for about a decade. In color, the light brown group was frequently used until 2008 while gray has mainly been of use since 2009.

20세기 록뮤직스타 헤어스타일의 특징과 상징성에 관한 연구 -1950년대에서 1970년대를 중심으로- (A Study on the Characteristics and Symbolism of Rock Music Star's Hairstyles)

  • The purpose of this thesis is to study the formative characteristics and symbolism shown in Rock stars' hairstyles through rock music to have influenced youth culture. There were a D.A style and a mop top style which included the youth characteristic to seek a new desire and value as the hairstyles of Rock & Roll stars, along with the characteristics of Rock & Roll music to represent the feeling of teenagers in 1950's at that time unlike the previous music due to high beats mixed with Rhythm & Blues (R & B) and Country music, and use of electronic guitars. We can see the desire for challenge and freedom against the then present regime, shouting love and peace, and resistance in the Psychedelic Rock music stars' hairstyle, which are untrimmed and disheveled, that is, natural. We can find explosiveness in Mohican and Spike style of Punk Rock stars playing fierce and aggressive music, along with words including indignation and assertion against the society's regime. The Artistic characteristic is implied in the following hairstyles: Glam Rock stars' hairstyle, a man's long-haired but a little long crew-cut style to reduce the bulky feeling and to give a bisexual, visible shock with hair dyed in orange to emphasize magnificence, and Punk Rock stars' hairstyle showing beauty in their own way with expression of anti-beauty to intentionally look ugly. Like this, the 20th Century's Rock music and youth culture are closely associated each other, and showed a new style, and played a leading role in street fashion, which became a momentum to much influence high fashion as a look of the 20th century modern fashion.

LGBTQ의 인권과 도서관서비스 (LGBTQ's Human Rights and Library Services)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 LGBTQ의 인권을 기저로 LGBTQ Friendly Library 정책의 방향을 제시하는 것이다. 이 목적을 달성하기 위하여, 이 글에서는 세계인권선언서(UDHR)와 미국도서관협회(ALA) 및 국제도서관연맹(IFLA)의 활동과 기존의 학술기사를 귀납적으로 분석하여, 그 결과로 우리나라 도서관의 LGBTQ 서비스 정책 수립에 필요한 7가지의 방향을 다음과 같이 제시하였다: 1) LGBTQ의 인권 향상과 도서관의 의무 선언, 2) 도서관인의 교육 강화, 3) 다양한 정보요구의 수집과 장서의 확대, 4) 정보검색 및 접근 도구의 개발, 5) 도서관 환경의 안전성과 시설사용의 평등성의 보장, 6) NGO와의 협력 네트워크의 구축, 마지막으로 7) LGBTQ 어린이 및 청소년의 지원.

융(Jung)의 아니마(Anima) 원형에 따른 남성 뷰티스타일 연구 - 남성 화장품 광고를 중심으로 - (A Study on the Characteristics of Male Beauty Style according to the Anima Archetype of Jungian Theory - Focusing on Men's Cosmetic Advertisements -)

  • The traditional masculinity has been gradually diversified towards the 21th century due to a new social environment. Men embrace his feminine side with heightened aesthetic sense using cosmetic products for better skin, hair, and nails. This diversification of male image and his beauty style proves the addition of feminity to masculinity. C. G. Jung felt that we are all really bisexual in nature. The anima is the female aspect present in the collective unconscious of men and it is the archetype through which we communicate with the collective unconscious generally, and it is important to get into touch with it for self-realization. This study analyzes subconscious desire based on the anima archetype in the collective unconscious of men through the diversity of the gender identity shown in men's cosmetic advertisements, and therefore it aim to help developing a marketing strategy of male beauty industry in the future. For this purpose, it conducted an empirical analysis of male beauty style in cosmetic advertisements through the Jungian anima theory. The conclusion of this study is as follows: First, gender identity represented in cosmetic advertisements was typified as Retrosexual, Ubersexual, Metrosexual, Cross sexual. Second, the anima archetype stimulates feminity in male beauty style. Cross sexual type has the highest feminine tendency. Third, range of utilization of cosmetic products is articulated with the diverse gender identity. Cross sexual type is most similar to the female beauty style. This feminization of male beauty style is the external expression of collective unconscious and affords human being to reach self-realization.

This diversification of women's images and styles is derived from the addition of masculinity to feminity. C. G. Jung insist that human being is bisexual in nature. Animus is the male aspect in the women's collective unconscious and it is the archetype through which we generally communicate with the collective unconscious. It is also important to get into touch with the collective unconscious for self-realization. 전남 여수시 안도섬에서 발견된 해오말의 유전학적 관계 연구 (Phylogenesis of Halophila ovalis (R. Br.) Hook. fil. (Hydrocharitaceae) from An Island, Korea)

  • 2007년 전라남도 여수시 남면 안도리에서 발견된 국내 미기록종 해오말은 지리적으로 열대부터 아열대까지 넓게 분포하는 식물로서 열매를 만든다. 잎의 모양은 계란형에 가깝고, 입꼭지는 견고하고 잎을 지지하고 있다. 뿌리는 불규칙적으로 뻗어있고, 뿌리 사이로 꽃이 형성되어 있다. 잎맥은 잎의 가장자리와 공간을 유지하고 있다. ITS1과 ITS2 부위은 한국산과 일본산 해오말은 100% 동일한 염기서열을 나타내고 있으나, 5.8S에서 한국산 해오말은 202 bp에서 206 bp까지 4개의 염기가 삽입된 것이 보였다. ITS 부위에 대한 한국산 해오말은 일본산과 동일한 유전적 clade을 나타내었으나, 필리핀, 호주, 베트남, 말레이시아산 해오말과는 유전적 분리를 보였다. 따라서 한국산 해오말은 일본에서 gene flow로 된 것으로 추정되며, 아열대성인 해오말이 우리나라 연안에 나타난 것은 기후변동에 의한 수온상승과도 밀접한 관계가 있는 것으로 보인다.
