A GIS-based Supply and Demand Potential Mapping of Forestry-biomass Energy (GIS를 기반으로 한 산림바이오에너지의 공급 및 수요 잠재지도 작성)

  • This study purposed to construct supply and demand potential map of forest bioenergy with a GIS-based decision support system. The target areas of this study were a part of the forests in Yongdong region, Gangwondo, and most types of forests were pinus densiflora, pinus koreaiansis, and Oak. Data about forest type, age classes, the number of households, regional silviculture planning was stored in GIS to define the potential areas for supplying potential bioenergy from the forests, and to assess biomass available for a household. Theoretical potential biomass energy based on silviculture plan was estimated in average 3,144 Tcal, and this quantity will be enough to supply the quantity of demand of households in that area. However, if it assumed that average collecting rates of Kangwon province were 10%, the available quantity of biomass will be between 6% and 15% of demand. If the collecting rates were 60%, the supply of biomass could exceed the quantity of demand in certain cities.

  • This study aimed to assess biomass energy resources available from waste wood due to forest land conversion. Forest land area of 7,806ha on annul average during 2001-2005 was converted to other land use and the growing stock of $266,551m^3$ was felled annually due to the conversion. Biomass energy potential of waste wood due to forest land conversion was estimated to 102,325 tons of biomass on annual average during 2001-2005 of which 57,945 tons were from coniferous forest and 44,379 tons were from broadleaved forest. Biomass energy Potential Per unit area Per year increased for the same period and was estimated to 13.0 tons of biomass on annual average.

Comparison of Carbon Sequestration Potential of Winter Cover Crop Cultivation in Rice Paddy Soil

  • BACKGROUND: Cultivation of winter cover crops is strongly recommended to increase land utilization efficiency, animal feeding material self-production, and to improve soil and environmental quality. METHODS AND RESULTS: Four major winter crops (barley, Chinese milk vetch, hairy vetch, and rye) having different C/N ratio were seeded in silt loam paddy soil in the November 2007 and the aboveground biomass was harvested on the late May 2008 to evaluate its effectiveness as green manure, and root biomass distribution was characterized at the different depth (0-60 cm) to study its effect on physical properties and carbon sequestration in soil. During this experiment, the naturally growing weed in the rice paddy soil in Korea, short awn foxtail (Alopecurus aequalis Sobol), was considered as control treatment. Above-ground biomass of all cover crops selected was significantly higher than that of the control treatment (2.8 Mg/ha). Comparatively higher above-ground biomass productivity of rye and barley (15.8 and 13.5 Mg/ha, respectively) suggested that these cover crops possibly had the highest potential as a green manure and animal feeding material. Root biomass production of different cover crops followed the same trend as that for their above ground biomass. Rye (Secale cereal) might have the highest potential for soil C accumulation (7893 C kg/ha) by root biomass development, and then followed by barley (6985 C kg/ha), hairy vetch (6467 C kg/ha), Chinese milk vetch (6671 C kg/ha), and control (5791 C kg/ha). CONCLUSION(s): Cover crops like rye and barley having high biomass productivity might be the most effective winter cover crops to increase organic carbon distribution in different soil aggregates which might be beneficial to improve soil structure, aeration etc. and C sequestration.

Seaweed Biomass Resources in Korea (한국의 해조류 바이오매스자원 현황)

  • There is a growing worldwide interest in the potential of marine biomass as an environmentally friendly and economically sustainable resource. Due to the great lack of comprehensive information about domestic seaweed resources, this study aimed to analyze the existing literature on the production and types of domestic seaweed species. Based on this data the possibilities of industrial use of domestic seaweed for the production of biofuels and bioplastics had been assessed. Our review took into account the seaweed species on domestic coasts as well as the species currently in great production via seaweed farming. Due to their wide distribution, their status as farmed crops, and the likelihood of securing their reliable supply, Codium fragile, Hizikia fuciformis, and Gelidium amansii were deemed to be the most appropriate candidates for domestic industrial use. The industrial potential of seaweed biomass was also explored by comparing the predicted amount of biomass necessary to replace current gasoline and plastics use with currently available farming space. The results of our study imply that once a steady and adequate supply of the proper kinds of seaweed can be secured through seaweed farming, there is a great potential for the development of new seaweed-based biofuels and bioplastics industries in Korea.

Estimation of Nitrogen Storage Potential and Aboveground Biomass of Tree Species Treated with Liquid Pig Manure (양돈분뇨 처리에 따른 수목의 질소저장 및 지상부 바이오매스 추정)

  • This study was conducted to estimate aboveground biomass and nitrogen storage potential of tree species-eight clones of a poplar and hybrids, one clone of Salix alba L., dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu and W.C. Cheng), yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.), Okamoto maple (Acer okamotoanum Nakai), and pin oak (Quercus palustris $M{\ddot{u}}nchh.$)- after treating with liquid pig manure. Stems showed the highest percentage of aboveground biomass, and followed by branches and leaves. Nitrogen content in aboveground biomass components was the highest in leaves, and followed by branches and stems. Average aboveground biomass production was higher in the clones and species treated with manure than those of not treated, 30 ton/ha and 16 ton/ha, respectively. In the manure-treated site, clone 'Dorskamp' of Populus deltoides${\times}$Populus nigra showed the highest aboveground biomass (48.3 ton/ha). Average nitrogen storage potential was superior in the clones and species treated with manure than those of not treated, 159 kg/ha and 90 kg/ha, respectively. Clone 'Dorskamp' also showed the greatest nitrogen storage potential (286.5 kg/ha) among tested tree species. Therefore, 'Dorskamp' is the most suitable clone for treating liquid pig manure, but additional studies are needed to determine any damages or tolerance from the treatment.

Energy potential and feasibility of utilization for domestic forest biomass as an alternative resource (대체에너지원으로서 국내 산림바이오매스 자원의 잠재력과 이용가능성)

  • This study aims to study the definition and characteristics of forest biomass as an alternative energy and to estimate the energy potential and feasibility of forest biomass utilization in domestic. Especially, significant attention is given to woody biomass such as forest residue, thinning log, etc. due to their renewable, sustainable and abundant properties. The results were summarized as follows. The utilization of these forest biomass could play an important role to activate the forest industry and increase the public benefit functions of forest, but more attention on their utilization is required and how they can be utilize more efficiently is the new task assigned to our forestry for sustainable forest management.

  • In compare with a major developed countries, Korea consumes much energy, but also eliminates much carbon dioxide. Agricultural sector eliminate much carbon dioxide than industrial sector. In Kyoto protocol, Korea needs to reduce carbon dioxide. One way to reduce carbon dioxide is utilization of biomass in rural area. This paper focus on utilization of biomass in rural area. If use 20% potential amount of biomass, it obtain 50% of TPES on agricultural sector. The condition of utilization biomass is connected with agricultural policy, environmental policy, and energy policy. And environmental restriction keep pace with economical incentive.

  • The biomass resources is one of promising ways to solve energy exhaustion issues and global warming issues at the same time. To evaluate domestic biomass resources potential such as agricultural wastes, forestry wastes, livestock wastes and municipal solid wastes, statistics data from various organizations were collected and analyzed in this study. Also, space energy densities of each districts in Korea were calculated and analyzed. The results from the evaluation of biomass energy potential and space energy densities in Korea might be useful to estimate the availability of biomass energy conversion processes and to choice a appropriate process to convert domestic biomass into energy.

Mapping and Assessment of Forest Biomass Resources in Korea (우리나라 산림 바이오매스 자원량 평가 및 지도화)

  • This study was conducted to assess forest biomass resource which is a carbon sink and a renewable resource in Korea. The total forest biomass resource potential was 804 million tons, and conifers, broadleaved forest and mixed forest accounted for 265 million tons, 282 million tons, and 257 million tons, respectively. Proportionately to regional forest stocks, biomass potential of Gangwon-do had most biomass potential, followed by Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongsangnam-do. The woody biomass from the byproduct of sawn timber in commercial harvesting was 707 thousand ton/year, and that from the byproduct of forest tending was 592 thousand ton/year. The amount resulted in about 1,300 thousand ton/year of potential supplies from forest biomass resource into the energy market. It's tonnage of oil equivalent(toe) was 585 thousand ton/year. In this study, we developed a program (BiomassMap V2.0) for forest biomass resource mapping. Used system to develop this program was Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Office Access ArcGIS and Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. Additionally, This program made use of tool such as ESRI MapObjects2.1 in order to take advantage of spatial information. This program shows the map of total biomass stock, annual biomass growth at forest land in Korea, and biomass production from forest tending and commercial harvesting. The information can also be managed by the program. The biomass resource map can be identified by regional and forest type for the purpose of utilization. So, we expect the map and program to be very useful for forest managers in the near future.

Evaluations of Potential Biofuels and Environmental Implications with Latent Biomass Resources in South Korea (국내 바이오매스 잠재 가용자원을 이용한 바이오 연료 생산량 및 온실가스 감축효과 분석)

  • Biofuel based on available biomass in rural area could contribute to increase the vitality and income of rural residents. This study estimates the potential production and environmental benefits of biofuel production from surplus rice, rice straw, cow manure, and food waste in South Korea. We could produce about 2.4 billion liters of ethanol using surplus rice and rice straw and 841 million $m^3$ of methane from cow manure and food waste. 1.7 billion liters of gasoline and 800 million liters of diesel could be replaced with these potential biofuel productions, which can annually reduce 4.9 million ton $CO_2$ eq. GHGs.
