In this research, biological uptake of heavy metals(Cd(II), Cu(II), Zn(II)) was measured under various conditions ; pH, initial heavy metal concentration, temperature, contact time and the amount of biomass through batch test. From this research, it was found that heavy metals might be removed through adsorption and accumulation in activated sludge process. Heavy metals were highly concentrated by microbial floc in activated sludge. Also, the removal efficiency was reached up to 80~90% within and after 1 hour the increase of removal efficiency was minimal. The order of accumulation efficiency was Cu(II)>Zn(II)>Cd(II), and the bonding strength between heavy metals and microbial floc may be expressed in order of Cu(II)>Zn(II)>Cd(II).
In this study, the detoxification methods were evaluated for the removal of fermentation inhibitors from synthetic solution containing the composition similar to the lignocellulosic hydrolysate. The enzyme peroxidase and laccase were used as a biological treatment method. The physico-chemical methods such as adsorption and ion exchange were applied by using activated charcoal and ion exchange resins. The enzyme peroxidase showed a excellent removal of phenolic compounds. The 5-HMF and furfural were completely removed by activated charcoal. The anion exchange resin showed a good result for detoxification of acetic acid. The activated charcoal and ion exchange resins lead to a loss of sugars more or less. The choice of detoxification method must be made after considering the composition and inhibitors in hydrolysates.
Biological phosphorus removal is characterized by complex interactions between different intracellular components of energy as PHA. Therefore, fundamental understanding of the behavior of the intracellular components and their influence on the removal of phosphorus is essential before control strategies to stabilize the proper process. The purpose of this study is to investigate relationship between release of phosphorus and synthesis of intracellular storage polymer. Mass of stored intracellular storage polymer was 21.2 mg PHA/L, 28.8 mg PHA/g MLSS. And phosphorus release/intracellular storage polymer synthesis rate was 1.8545 mg stored polymer/mg Phosphate. In the aerobic phase, mass of PAOs synthesis is 49.37 mg PAOs/L. And PAOs fraction was 6.7-6.9%. Thus intracellular storage polymer synthesis by PAOs is calculated as 493mg PHA/g PAOs.
Advanced Phase Isolation Ditch (APID) process was studied to develop economic retrofitting technology, for the plants where retrofitting of common activated sludge process is required. In this study, to develop and apply the modified intermittently aeration mode as process control conditions for treating municipal wastewater, a demonstration plant was installed and operated in the existing sewage treatment plant of P city. During this study, the average effluent $BOD_5$, SS, T-N, and T-P concentrations were 6.3, 4.5, 10.0, and 1.3 mg/L. The modified mode decreased the nitrification capability more than the conventional mode in the application period. Nitrate in the anaerobic condition can have a negative effect on biological phosphorus removal. In the decreasing nitrate levels, the modified mode increased the biological ability of removal phosphorus more than the conventional mode in this study. Therefore, newly developed APID process with modified intermittent aeration mode can be one of the useful processes for stable organic matter and nutrients removal.
Several tests were conducted to optimize the design parameters of ln-situ soil flushing processes for diesel contaminated soil. According to the batch extraction test for three anionic surfactants evaluation, Calgonit limiting bubble occurrence was selected for its higher oil cleaning efficiency. After optimum surfactant selection, there were many sets of column flushing test. Over 70% of BTEX was removed in this surfactant dose with 400% of soil volume. In the case of no surfactant addition flushing in column, so called "blank flushing test", BTEX removal rate was 64%. But when we reused the effluent for the cleaning solution, the removal rate was decreased to 46.9%. This result showed reabsorption of oil occurred on the soil. With the addition of Calgonit solution to the diesel contaminated column, BTEX was removed up to 98.9% during the first flushing and 99.4% for the second recirculation flushing. In microcosm tests, diesel contaminated soils were cleaned by both surfactant flushing and biological activities. In anoxic condition, nitrate was used as an electron acceptor while the surfactant and the oil were used an electron donor. BTEX removal efficiency could be achieved up to 80% by biological degradation.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the partial oxidation of the biological treatment plant effluents using Fenton's reagent as a pretreatment step prior to a tertiary biological oxidation of these effluents. Fenton's reagent was evaluated as a pretreatment process for inhibitory or refractory organics. Based on the Fenton oxidation system, the petrochemical wastewater treatment plant effluent was shown to have significant improvement in toxicity after oxidation with hydrogen peroxide. For example, at ranee of 42 ∼ 184 mg/L COD of petrochemical plant effluents, the COD removal efficiencies were from 38.2% to 60.1% after reaction with hydrogen peroxide 200 mg/L and Fe2+ 100 mg/L and reaction time was 30 minutes. The total TOC reduction were about 15.8∼22.4% with same test condition and difference between the overall removal rate and BOD/COD ratio after Fenton's oxidation estabilished in the biodegradation and otherwise meets the discharge standard or reuse for cooling tower make-up water.
In this study, the factors affecting biological N and P removal using SND (simultaneous nitrification and denitrification) process were investigated and evaluated to examine the possibility of treating N and P through SND with NADH by surveying N and P traces in an aeration tank. Variations of $NH_4^+$-N+$NO_3^-$-N concentration were used to estimate the degree of SND in each point (P2, P3, P4, P5) of the aeration tank and these variations showed that denitrification efficiency in P2 (front zone), nitrification and denitrification efficiencies in P4 (middle zone) were 67%, 86% and 39%, respectively. When $PO_4^{-3}$-P concentration was analyzed in each point of the aeration tank, it was shown that $PO_4^{-3}$-P concentration coming into P2 was 1.25 mg/L, which increased to 2.22 mg/L by P release in P2 zone and then decreased to 0.74 mg/L by P uptake in P4. Consequently, we were able to estimate which high P removal efficiency observed in this study was caused by biological phosphorus removal. To determine the operating factors affecting effluent T-N, we analyzed the correlation among FN/M ratio, C/N ratio, Temp., SRT etc and these results showed that the correlation among FN/M ratio, C/N ratio and Temp was not high. However, the relationship of SRT and other parameters (effluent $NH_4^+$-N and effluent BOD) and the short SRT could have an affect on effluent $NH_4^+$-N and so effluent BOD could be increased. Thus, SRT operation should be controlled over 10 days. The results for analyzing the correlation between SRT and influent $NO_3^-$-N in order to investigate the operating factors affecting effluent T-P showed that T-P or $PO_4^{-3}$-P was not highly correlation with SRT, whereas $PO_4^{-3}$-P concentration increased along with increasing $NO_3^-$-N concentration into P2. Based on these results, we concluded, using regression analysis (R2=0.97), that effluent $PO_4^{-3}$-P concentration depends on $NO_3^-$-N concentration into P2.
This study was conducted to remove the dyes in dye wastewater by the chemical precipitation or biological treatment which are one of the main pollutants in dye wastewater. In order to remove the disperse dyes effectively in aqueous solution by chemical precipitation process, coagulation and flocculation tests were carried out using several coagulants on various reaction conditions. It was found that the Ferrous sulfate was the most effective coagulant for the removal of disperse dye(DB79), and we could get the best result for the removal of disperse dye(DB56) in the aspects of TOC removal efficiency and sludge yield. When the Ferrous sulfate dosage was 800mg/l, the sludge settling velocity was very fast$(SV_{30}=4\%)$, and the color was effectively removed in the disperse dye(DB79) solution. Although the color removal was ineffective when the Alum was used as a coagulant, the sludge yield decreased in comparison with the Ferrous sulfate or the Ferric sulfate being used in the disperse dye(DB56) solution. In order to decolorize disperse dye(DR17) by using biological treatment process, a strain which has potential ability to degrade disperse dyes was isolated from natural system. The optimal culture conditions of temperature and pH were found to be $40^{\circ}C\;and\;8.5\~9$, respectively. When yeast extract was mixed with polypeptone at the mixing ratio of 1:1 as a nitrogen source, decolorization efficiency was highest$(93\%)$ among the nitrogen sources. The strain screened was excellent to adjust to pH, and it seems to have ability to control pH needed to growth. The optimal culture conditions in concentration of $MgSO_{4.}\cdot7H_2O\;and\;KH_2PO_4$ were $0.1\%(w/v)\;and\;0.2\%(w/v)$, respectively. Strains degrading and decolorizing reactive dyes, RB198 and RR141 which were isolated from water system, are named RBK1 and RRK. And the cell growth characteristics of RBK1 and RRK were investigated. The optimal culture conditions of temperature and pH were found to be 30t' and 7.0, respectively. Optimum nitrogen source was peptone, and it was found that decolorization efficiencies by strains RBK1 and RRK, were $85\%\;and\;62\%$, respectively, with introduction of 4,000mg/l of peptone. In the case of RBK1, color removal efficiencies were very high below 400mg/l. Decolorization efficiency was over $90\%$ at 20hours of culture time. The Color degradation ability of RRK was lower than that of RBK1.
Swine wastewater contains high amounts of organic matter and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus). The biological nitrogen removal can be achieved by nitrification and denitrification processes. Nitrification-denitrification can be performed via nitrite which is called as the short-cut process. This Short-cut process saves up to 25% of oxygen and 40% of external carbon during nitrification and denitrification. In this study, the batch tests were conducted to assess the different parameters for the nitrite sulfur utilizing denitrification, such as alkalinity, temperature, initial nitrite concentration, and dissolved oxygen. The experimental results showed that the nitrite removal efficiency of the reactor was found to be over 95% under the optimum condition ($30^{\circ}C$ and sufficient alkalinity). Autotrophic nitrate denitrification was inhibited at low alkalinity condition showing only 10% removal efficiency, while nitrite denitrification was achieved over 95%. The nitrite removal rates were found similar at both $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$. In addition, nitrite removal efficiencies were inhibited by increasing oxygen concentration, but sulfate concentration increased due to sulfur oxidation under an aerobic condition. Sulfate production and alkalinity consumption were decreased with nitrite compared those with nitrate.

In this study, The effects of three different biological activated carbon (BAC) materials (each coal, coconut and wood based activated carbons) and anthracite, empty bed contact time (EBCT) and water temperature on the removal of MK, HHCB and AHTN in BAC filters were investigated. Experiments were conducted at three water temperatures (5, 15 and $25^{\circ}C$) and four EBCTs (5, 10, 15 and 20 min). The results indicated that coal based BAC retained more attached bacterial biomass on the surface of the activated carbon than the other BAC, increasing EBCT or increasing water temperature increased the synthetic musk compounds (SMCs) removal in BAC columns. The kinetic analysis suggested a first-order reaction model for MK, HHCB and AHTN removal at various water temperatures (5, 15 and $25^{\circ}C$). The pseudo-first-order biodegradation rate constants and half-lives were also calculated for MK, HHCB and AHTN removal at 5, 15 and $25^{\circ}C$. The pseudo-first-order biodegradation rate constants and half-lives of MK, HHCB and AHTN ranging from 0.0082 $min^{-1}$ to 0.4452 $min^{-1}$ and from 1.56 min to 84.51 min could be used to assist water utilities in designing and operating BAC filters for SMCs removal.
