A pilot scale anaerobic fixed-bed with a reactor volume of $2.8m^3$ was built to treat slaughterhouse wastewater. Bamboo rings were chosen as support media mainly because of their cheaper price in underdeveloped countries. Even with their lower porosity and specific surface, the reactor performance showed a maximum 95% COD removal efficiency at an organic loading rate (OLR) of $1kg\;COD/m^3-d$ with its corresponding hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 7.5 d. At a higher OLR of $4.0kg\;COD/m^3-d$, the COD removal efficiency of 75% was achieved with an HRT of 2 d. No big difference in COD removal efficiencies was found between the reactors operated in both upflow and downflow modes. Their operational behavior and effluent characteristics were similar. The effluent COD/TKN ratio of 6.67 at an OLR of $4.0kg\;COD/m^3-d$ was only marginal acceptable range for a subsequent biological denitrification process. Otherwise carbon supplementation is required at a lower OLR.
This review discusses the production of alpha-particle-emitting radionuclides in radioimmunotherapy. Radioimmunotherapy labeled with alpha-particle is expected to be very useful for the treatment of monocellular cancer (e.g. leukemia) and micrometastasis at an early stage, residual tumor remained in tissues after chemotherapy and tumor resection, due to the high linear energy transfer (LET) and the short path length in biological tissue of alpha particle. Despite of the expected effectiveness of alpha-particle in radioimmunotherapy, its clinical research has not been activated by the several reasons, shortage of a suitable a-particle development and a reliable radionuclide production and supply system, appropriate antibody and chelator development. Among them, the establishment of radionuclide development and supply system is a key factor to make an alpha-immunotherapy more popular in clinical trial. Alpha-emitter can be produced by several methods, natural radionuclides, reactor irradiation, cyclotron irradiation, generator system and elution. Due to the sharply increasing demand of $^{213}Bi$, which is a most promising radionuclide in radioimmunotherapy and now has been produced with reactor, the cyclotron production system should be developed urgently to meet the demand.
While the enhanced biological phosphorus removal(EBPR), in anaerobic/aerobic condition, was known to remove phosphorus by means of metabolism of poly-P microorganisms, the phosphorus removed could be released in the form of ortho-P in the aerobic fixed biofilm reactor. This study was initiated to investigate the cause of ortho-P release in the aerobic fixed biofilm reactor. The resutls indicated that the phosphorus release was caused by autooxidation. The synthesis and release of phosphrous were related to the ORP and the boundary value for the phase change was about 170mV. In the synthesis phase, the phosphorus removal rate per COD removed was $0.023mgP_{syn}/mgCOD_{rem}$. The phosprous contents of the microorganism were 4.3 ~ 6.0% on a dry weight basis.
An investigation was made to develop new biofilm medium which could be applied to the Sequencing Batch Biofilm Reactor(SBBR) system for enhanced nutrient removal. 21 kinds of polyurethane media were tested fro adhesion ability for nitrifying bacteria. Nitrification rates were also tested by introducing synthetic wastewater containing ammonium-nitrogen to reactors with biofilm media. It was found that Z96-06 medium had higher selective adhension ability for nitrifying bacteria than the other biofilm media. The nitrification rate was 2.21 mg {{{{ { NH}`_{4 } ^{ +} }}}}-N /L$.$h$.$g MLSS when we operated the SBBR system containing Z96-06. Nitrification rate of the SBBR system increased approximately by 30% compared with that of the Sequencing Batch Reactor(SBR) system which did not contain biological carrier.

There have been several problems in treating shipboard sewage due to special environmental conditions of ship, such as limited space, rolling and pitching, change of temperature and so on. It was suggested that Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR) might be suitable process for overcome these problems in terms of small size, high capacity of treating wastewater and full automation. In this study a SBR process was employed for biological treatment of organic wastes in the shipboard sewage. This process was able to remove nitrogen and phosphorus as well as organic matter efficiently. More than 95% of chemical oxygen demand(COD) were removed. In addition, about 97% of total nitrogen (T-N) was reduced. The total phosphorus(T-P) reduction averaged 93%. A disturbance operation caused by the treatment of Methylene Blue Active Substances(MBAS) was not observed.

Development of carbon-neutral fuel production technologies to solve climate change issues is progressing worldwide. Among them, methane can be produced through the synthesis of hydrogen produced by renewable energy and carbon dioxide captured through a CO2 methanation reaction, and the fuel produced in this way is called synthetic methane or e-methane. The CO2 methanation reaction can be conducted via biological or thermochemical methods. In this study, a 30 Nm3/h thermochemical CO2 methanation process consisting of an isothermal reactor and an adiabatic reactor was used. The CO2 conversion rate and methane concentration according to the temperature measurement results at the center and outside of the adiabatic reactor were analyzed. The gas flow into the adiabatic reactor was found to reach equilibrium after about 1.10 seconds or more by evaluating the residence time. Furthermore, experimental and analysis results were compared to evaluate performance of the reactor.
Aerated submerged bio-film (ASBF) pilot plant has been developed. The presented studies optimized an inexpensive method of enhanced wastewater treatment. The objectives of this research were to describe pilot scale experiments for efficient removal of dissolved organic and nitrogen compounds by using ASBF reactor in plug-flow reactor (PFR) and improve understanding of dissolved organic matter and nitrogen compounds removal rates with dynamic relationships between heterotrophs and autotrophs in the fixed-film reactor. This research explores the possibility of enhancing the performance of shallow wastewater treatment lagoons through the addition of specially designed structures. This direct gas-phase contact should increase the oxygen transfer rate into the bio-film, as well as increase the micro-climate mixing of water, nutrients, and waste products into and out of the bio-film. This research also investigated the efficiency of dissolved organic matter and ammonia nitrogen removals in the ASBF. As it was anticipated, nitrification activity was highest during periods when the flow rate was lower, but it seemed to decline during times when the flow rate was highest. And ammonia nitrogen removal rates were more sensitive than dissolved organic matter removal rates when flow rates exceeded 2.2 L/min.
A batch and a continuous type experiments were conducted to test the conditions for simultaneous phosphorus release and uptake, and denitrification, taking place in one process. The bacteria able to denitrify as well as to remove phosphorus were evaluated for the application to biological nutrient removal(BNR) process. In the batch-type experiment, simultaneous reactions of phosphorus release and uptake, and also denitrification were observed under anoxic condition with high organic and nitrate loading. However the rate and the degree of P release were lower than that occurred under anaerobic condition. BNR processes composed of anaerobic-anoxic-oxic(AXO), anoxic-anaerobic-oxic(XAO) and anoxic-oxic(XO) were operated in continuous condition. The anoxic reactors in each process received nitrate loading. In the AXO process, P release in anaerobic reactor and the luxury uptake in oxic reactor proceeded actively regardless to nitrate loading. However in XAO and XO processes, P release and luxury uptake occurred only with the nitrate loading less than $0.07\;kg{NO_3}^--N$/kgMLSS-d. With higher nitrate load, P release increased and the luxury uptake decreased. Therefore, it appeared that the application of denitrifying phosphorus-removing bacteria (DPB) to BNR process must first resolve the problem with decrease of luxury uptake of phosphorus in oxic reactor.
Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to study the conversion of sludge from conventional activated sludge to nitrogen-phosphorus removal sludge using two types of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) systems, a conventional SBR and sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR). The nitrogen and phosphorus removal characteristics were similar between SBR and SBBR and the removal efficiencies were very low when the influent TOC concentrations were low. The nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies in SBR were 96% and 77.5%, respectively, which were higher than those in SBBR (88% and 42.5%) at the high influent TOC concentration. In SBBR, the simultaneous nitrification-denitrification was occurred because of the biofilm process. The variations of pH, DO concentration and ORP were changed as the variation of influent TOC concentration both in SBR and SBBR and their periodical characteristics were cleary shown at the high influent TOC concentration. Especially, the pH, DO concentration and ORP inflections, were cleary occurred in SBR compared with SBBR.
