Ownership of Human Biological Material - Concerning on Dead Body - (인체 유래 생물학적 물질의 소유권 - 사체를 중심으로 -)

  • Ownership is the bundle of rights that allow a person or institute to use and control an object. As the biomedical science is advanced, we should consider whether human biological material should be recognized as property. Whether separated parts of the human body can be objects of ownership is a different issue. Many thought that separated parts of the human body could not be objects of ownership. This idea is primarily based on this thought: even if a piece of human biological material is separated from a person, it still relates to that person, and if treated as a thing, human dignity may be harmed. However, some commentators have admitted separated parts of the human body into the realm of property. Though a person owns his/her body or body parts, this does not mean that he/she can do anything he/she desires. There are many natural and social limitations to exercise the ownership of human biological material as discussed above. Human dignity is the core consideration whether or not we recognize that ownership of human biological material biomedical research and knowledge.

Adsorption Characteristics of Toluene Gas Using Fluorinated Phenol-based Activated Carbons (불소화 처리된 페놀계 활성탄소를 이용한 톨루엔 가스흡착 특성)

  • Activated carbons (ACs) were treated by fluorination to improve the adsorption property of toluene gas among volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The pore characteristics and surface properties of these activated carbons were evaluated by BET and XPS and the adsorption property and removal efficiency of toluene gas was investigated by gas chromatography. The breakthrough time of fluorinated ACs was increased about 27% compared to that of untreated ACs when the toluene gas of 100 ppm was flowed at a flow rate of $300cm^3/min$. Fluorinated AC of 0.1 g adsorbent totally adsorbed toluene gas in 100 ppm to 100 % during the adsorption time in 19 h. These results can be used as a treatment technology or removal of carcinogenic materials such as toluene.

  • Heterocyclic compounds with oxygen atoms are known to have potent biological effect. The flavonoids. isoflavonoids. and coumarins which form the bulk of these compounds are very polar and have limited use as drugs which have to pass through membranes. The non-polar property is increased by exchange oxygen to selenium as a part of heterocyclic compound. Our group is focused on synthesizing selenoheterocyclic compound with the above property.   • This paper aims to suggest a policy for biological resource based on a comprehensive understanding on biological resources. Biological resources are different from traditionally recognized viable organisms (Biodiversity) in ecosystems. Biological resources are culturable and replicable resources of living organisms such as tissues, cells and genes. Moreover, biological resources include human-derived biological materials. Biological resources is not simply a matter of science and technology. Biological resources should be dealt with as national resources. There are many international issues regarding biological resources, such as intellectual property rights (IPRs), safety on handling and distribution, material transfer agreements (MTAs) for mutual benefits and biological standards. Ethical debates are also being raised because biological resources are related with human-derived biological materials. Every nation has tendency to adopt its government policies to strengthen its sovereignty on biological resources and international cooperation. In addition, international linkages are essential for providing enhanced worldwide accessibility to biological resources. Japan has shown several international initiatives in the field of biological resources. Korea has just begun to design appropriate policies for the use and R&D of biological resources. Therefore, this paper suggests the following needs: 1) policy at the national level beyond the interests of researchers, 2) inter-ministerial coordination across government ministries, 3) expansion of scope and size of each BRC (Biological Resource Centers), and 4) building networks and systems such as national information center, representative centers by field, and each BRC.

  • A biological data acquisition based on web has emerged as a powerful tool for allowing scientists to interactively view entries form different databases, and to navigate from one database to another molecular-biology database links. In this paper, the biological conceptual model is constructed hybrid biological data model to represent interesting entities in the data sources to applying navigation rule property for each biological data source based on four biological data integrating layers to control biological data. When some user's requests for application service are occurred, we can get the data from database and data source via web service. In this paper, we propose a query processing model and execution structure based on integrating data layers that can search information on biological data sources.

  • Bran structure and gelatinization property of upland and lowland japonica waxy brown rice were compared. Dimension, weight and number of aleurone layer were similar between upland(Nonglimna 1) and lowland(Shinsunchalbyeo) rices, but the aleurone layer and pericarp of upland rice were thicker. Water uptake rate of upland rice at $60^{\circ}C$ was lower than that of lowland one. There was no difference in intrinsic viscosity between two rice starches. Upland rice starch had lower onset temperature, narrower gelatinization temperature and lower water content lot gelatinization compared with lowland rice starch.

  • SecA protein which has a pivotal role in the preprotein cranslocation across the inner membrane of Escherichia coli is a water-soluble protein with an unusual property of penetrating the membrane readily. An interesting and important question is what structural characteristics of SecA enables its ready penetration of lipid bilayer. The conformational properties of SecA in solution at 3$0^{\circ}C$, pH 7.5 were observed by hydrogen-tritium (HT) exchange, and denaturant-induced denaturation/renaturation and thermal unfolding. Conjugated Diacetylene Supramolecules for Label-Free Biological Sensors and Chips

  • Conjugated diacetylene supramolecules are interesting biomimetic materials in view of application to chemical and label-free biological sensors. These supramolecules are unique in changing color from blue to red upon specific binding events. Various binding events including viruses, toxins, glucose, and ionic interactions have been reported detectible. Here, we focus on fabrication of polydiacetylene supramolecule dot array patterns on solid substrates by using a conventional microarrayer. Each dot is found to possess the color-changing property as well as the fluorescence self-emission. This technique allows us, for the first time, to fabricate biochips based on polydiacetylene supramolecules. Label-free detection of small molecules and biological targets will be discussed.

A Study on Optical Properties in Biological Tissue Using A Photon Path Diffusion Model (광 항적경로 모델을 이용한 피하조직에서의 광 특성에 관한 연구)

  • This paper proposes a method of noninvasive reflectance light to measure the blood fractional volume (Vb) and oxygen saturation ($SO_2$) of biological tissue. We chose the red light of 660nm and infrared light of 880nm. In Vivo reflectance data were obtained by the physiological changes front the surface of the skin over the calf in human subject. The reflected light intensity from different layers within a biological tissue was measured by specially designed reflectometer to apply photon path diffusion model. The collected data represent the changes of blood (ractional volume and oxygen saturation at each reflected light wavelengths. The data evaluation was assessed by examining the slopes of the plotted indices for the changes in oxygen saturation and blood (ractional volume. The results presented in this paper claim that light reflectance can separately discriminate the change of blood volume and that of oxygenation in muscle and also in skin.

  • For preventing the biological damage domestically, insect damage control method using chemical medicine has been applied. However, it is trend to avoid existing chemical medicine such as Methyl bromide because of the problem of being harmful to human body and environment. Therefore, the research for new medicine to replace this has been done and the interest to the physical treatment such as temperature(high & low) treatment, hypoxic treatment, carbon dioxide treatment, and radiation treatment has increased. However the systematic application standard and way has not been established. Therefore, in this research, we are going to organize present condition of domestic cultural asset preventing biological damage after the 1980's. It will also consider the direction through the characteristic of technology, limit, and replacement medicine by examining the past research.
