  • In order to research the adsorption removal characteristics of trace organic by-products in disinfection of drinking water by biological activated carbon(BAC), water samples disinfect- ted with $Cl_2$, $O_3$ and $ClO_2$ after treatment by fluidized-bed system with water added with humic acid(10mg/L) were investigated the formation and the removal of trihalomethanes (THMs), and the trace organic by-products by gas chromatography(GC) II gas chromatography/mass selective detector(GC/MSD). Control was used by activated carbon(AC) and water added with humic acid(HA). The results were summarized as follow : The THMs removal effect of BAC by chlorination was in lower 90 % than that of control(HA), the sorts of oxidants formed by $Cl_2$ , $O_3$ and $ClO_2$ were that $O_3$ was very fewer than $Cl_2$ or $ClO_2$, and that $ClO_2$ was fewer than $Cl_2$. The trace organic by-products were esters and phthalates etc. Based on results above, it is concluded that BAC was appeared the more desirable adsorbtion-degradation removal characteristics than that of AC.

  • There still exist adhesives that have toxic compounds or consist of those materials in both our life and lots of industries. For instance, formaldehyde adhesive had been still used for woodworking and some medical adhesives had been considered as toxicity problems. In this situation, natural adhesives from raw materials have been suggested as an one of considerable interests. Natural adhesives in recent have been reported fabrication methods via biological materials such as proteins, celluloses, and starches. By-products derived from agricultural something have them richly and each has additional special properties. Using these properties to make natural adhesives, unique adhesives would be attained. In particular, rice-based adhesive is such a good example. Rice-based by-product adhesives have interestingly some pros pertaining to high adhesive strength, excellent water resistance and could dramatically be reduced a formaldehyde a harmful component of plywood. Hence, rice-based adhesive like glues could be applied to lots of industries including agricultural and biological technology. This review paper highlighted some recent development on natural adhesives as a promising biomaterial for agricultural and biological technology fields. The design of agricultural by-product-based natural adhesives were described to demonstrate the application of agricultural and biological technology

  • Polymethoxyflavones (PMFs) are a group of polymethoxylated bioactive flavones with diverse biological activities, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral activities. PMFs are found from various plants such as orange, tangerine, and krachaidum. To establish the simple quantitative analytical methods for PMFs, chromatographic analysis was applied to the selected krachaidum foods because krachaidum contains diverse PMFs compared to other PMF-containing foods. Krachaidum is the rhizome of Kaempferia parviflora, and many commercial krachaidum products, such as tea, juice and wine, are commercially available and consumed as health functional foods in Asian countries. Apart from the claimed health promoting benefits, reliable quality assurance and legal guideline for the registration of these products are not available yet. Twelve PMFs were analyzed from the commercial krachaidum foods by GC-FID and HPLC-DAD. No single chromatographic method could not analyze 12 PMFs simultaneously. HPLC-DAD method was found more sensitive to detect PMFs. Based on our analysis data, we proposed 5,7-dimethoxyflaone and 5,7,4'-trimethoxyflavone as index components for the food products.

  • Milk is well known to be rich in some nutrients such as protein, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins. In particular, absorption and bioavailability of calcium receive lots of attention because calcium is very little absorbed until it is changed to the ionized form in the intestine. In this study, concentration of the soluble calcium was determined in the commercial bovine milk products, which were processed by different heat-treatment methods for pasteurization. As for general constituents, lactose, fat, protein, and mineral were almost same in the liquid milk products by different processors. Ultrafiltration of the skimmed milk caused little change in the permeate as for lactose content but both fat and protein decreased. pH values ranges from 6.57-6.62 at room temperature and slightly increase after centrifugation, 10,000 g, 10 min. Rennet-coagulation activity was the lowest in the ultra high temperature (UHT-)milk compared to the low temperature long time (LTLT-) and high temperature short time (HTST-)milk products. Each bovine milk products contains 1056.5-1111.3 mg/kg of Ca. The content of sulfhydryl group was the lowest in raw milk compared to the commercial products tested. For the skimmed milks after ultrafiltration with a membrane (Mw cut-off, 3 Kd), soluble Ca in the raw milk was highest at 450.2 mg/kg, followed by LTLT-milk 336.4-345.1 mg/kg, HTST-milk 305.5-313.3 mg/kg, UHT-milk 370.3-380.2 mg/kg in the decreasing order. After secondary ultrafiltration with a membrane (Mw cut-off, 1 kD), total calcium in raw milk had a highest of 444.2 mg/kg, and those in the market milk products. As follow: UHT-milk, 371.3 to 378.2 mg/kg; LTLT-milk, 333.3 to 342.2 mg/kg; HTST-milk 301.9 to 311.2 mg/kg in a decreasing order.

  • ${\gamma}$-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) content in fermented plant products and their main plant materials (aerial part of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus, fruit of Crataegus pinnatifida, and whole plant of Morus alba) was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. GABA was quantified using a reverse-phase column with a gradient elution program (water:acetonitrile =90:10 to 0:100 for 40 min). UV detection was conducted at 280 nm. GABA content was measured in fermented plant products (15.07 mg/g), aerial part of A. sessiliflorus (4.49 mg/g), fruit of C. pinnatifida (10.59 mg/g), and whole plant of M. alba (2.31 mg/g). The presence of GABA in fermented plant products, including A. sessiliflorus, C. pinnatifida, and M. alba is important in industrial application for health supplements.

  • Biological safety, physico-chemical and microbiological experiments were carried out in order to study the possibility of radiation sterilization on medical products, such as polyethylene and polystyrene bottles, gauze sponges and surgical silk suture. Results are as follows: 1. Biological test on plastic samples as to acute systemic toxicity, eye irritation, skin irritation, pyrogen, haemolysis showed satisfactory results. But physico-chemically, the oxidizable matter, nonvolatile residues, residue on ignition seemed to be increased slightly in irradiated samples, though the experimental results were within the range of U.S.P. 19, N.F. and K.P. III. 2. After irradiation, both plastic and gauze sponges showed considerable decrease in pH. 3. Most medical products were sterilized by 1.5 Mard. For the sterilization of the suigical silk suture, 4.5 Mrad is required dul to its radiation resistant micro-organisms. 4. Biologically, total dose of 2.5 Mrad was safe enough to sterilize the medical products, and physico-chemically the results are acceptable according to U.S.P. 19 and K.P. III. However, better results may be expected when the quality of material and additives are improved.

  • Two acetylmartynosides, 2"-acetylmartynoside and 3"-acetylmartynoside were isolated from the $CH_2Cl_2$ fraction of Clerodendron trichotomum (Verbenaceae) by open column chromatography and MPLC. Their chemical structures were identified by the direct comparison of spectral data reported in the literature, and their antioxidant properties were evaluated. Both compounds showed antioxidant activity based on evaluations of intracellular ROS and DPPH radical scavenging activities.

  • A new spectroscopic method for pesticide residues detection on agricultural products was developed. The general determination methods are high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC) or GC-mass spectrometry. They have provided relatively good detection limit and accuracy with complicated and time-consuming (5hrs above) procedures. In addition freshness is very important for evaluating qualities of agricultural products. This requires a simple and fast method for detection of pesticides. Reflectance, transmittance and fluorescence spectrometry of pesticides were tested using UV range because most of pesticides contain conjugation band in the molecular structures. Fluorescence spectrometry showed better sensitive to detect pesticide residues than did reflectance and transmittance spectrometry. Intensity and shape of fluorescence spectra showed different patterns with different structures of pesticides. Detection limit for fluorescence spectrometry was 0.1 ppm to 10 ppm depending on the structures of pesticides. Application of fluorescence spectrometry appears to be an easy method for detection of pesticide residues on agricultural products.
