The electrode for gas sensor was prepared by using pitch-based activated carbon fibers and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to investigate the toxic gas sensing characteristics. The physicochemical properties of activated carbon fibers electrode for gas sensor were analyzed with SEM and BET. Toxic gases sensing property of the electrode was also identified by different toxic gases such as $NH_3$, NO and $CO_2$. The specific surface area of activated carbon fibers electrode for gas sensor was decreased by 33% owing to PVA used as a binder compared with the activated carbon fibers. However, its pore size distribution of the ACF electrode was not greatly influenced by PVA. The activated carbon fibers electrode for gas sensor responded to toxic gases by electron hopping unlike semiconductor based gas sensors. In this study, activated carbon fibers electrode was decreased to 7.5% in resistance for the NH3 gas of the 100 ppm concentration and its $NH_3$ gas sensing property was confirmed the most excellent compared with other toxic gases.

The purpose of this research is to survey characteristics of microbial community and the removal efficiency of organic materials for biological activated carbon in water treatment plant. Coal based activated carbon retained more attached bacterial biomass on the surface of the activated carbon than the other activated carbon with operating time and materials. The heterotrophic plate count(HPC), eubacteria(EUB) and 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole(DAPI) counts were ranged from $0.95{\times}10^7$ to $52.4{\times}10^7$ CFU/g, from $3.8{\times}10^8$ to $134.2{\times}10^8$ cells/g and from $7.0{\times}10^8$ to $250.2{\times}10^8$ cells/g, respectively. The biomass of EUB and DAPI appeared to be much more $10^2$ than HPC, which were increasing in bed volume of 20,000 at the stage of steady-state. The change of microbial community by analyzing fluorescent in situ hybridization(FISH) method with rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes, the dominant group was $\alpha$-proteobacteria($\alpha$ group) and high G+C content bacteria(HGC) the lowest distributing rate before reaching the bed volume of 20,000. After reaching the bed volume of 20,000, $\alpha$ group and other groups of bacteria became decreased, on the other hand, the proportion of both $\beta$-proteobacteria($\beta$ group) and $\gamma$-proteobacteri($\gamma$ group) were increasing. Coconut and wood based activated carbons had similar trend with coal based activated carbon, but the rate of $\alpha$ group on coal based activated carbon had gradually increased. Bacterial production with the operating period appeared highest in coal based activated carbon at the range of $1.2{\sim}3.4\;mg-C/m^3{\cdot}h$ while the coconut and wood based activated carbon were ranged from 1.1 to 2.6 $mg-C/m^3{\cdot}h$ and from 0.7 to 3.5 $mg-C/m^3{\cdot}h$ respectively. The removal efficiency of assimilable organic carbon(AOC) showed to be highly correlated with bacterial production. The correlation coefficient between removal efficiency of AOC and bacterial production were 0.679 at wood based activated carbon, 0.291 at coconut based activated carbon and 0.762 at coal based activated carbon, respectively.
Biological Activated Carbon (BAC) process is widely used for the advanced water treatment, but it's mechanisms have not been well understood, especially the relationship between biodegradation and carbon adsorption. Also the phenomenon of bioregeneration has been confused that previously occupied adsorption sites appear to be made available through the actions of microorganisms. Therefore, the objectives of this study examines closely the mechanism of bioregeneration by temperature variation, especially low temperature.
Treatment performance and microbial community structure were investigated in water-soluble cutting oil treatment process using biological activated carbon. DOC removal in BACI column at $15^{\circ}C$ was higher than at $25^{\circ}C$, but those of BAC3 column after 60days was high at$25^{\circ}C$. Also, quinone content of first-step reactors at $25^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$ was much the same, but those of the third-step reactor at $25^{\circ}C$ was higher than at $15^{\circ}C$. The dominant type of two apparatus was ubquinone (UQ)-l 0 followed by UQ-8. Menaquinones were detected from $25^{\circ}C$ apparatus and effluent. This suggested that DOC removal at $25^{\circ}C$ was advanced degradation by attached microorganisms on the activated carbon surface. The DOC removal in long-term activated carbon apparatus increased with going in BAC3 column. This indicated the influent of POC was a result of DOC removal efficiency decrease. Integrated DOC removal from start point in experiment to break point and quinone content were showed a tendency of increasing with going last-step activated carbon apparatus. Therefore, the biological activated carbon apparatus used by this study was effective treatment process in contaminated groundwater by water-soluble cutting oil.
In this study, activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were treated by oxy-fluorination to improve the adsorption property of benzene gas, one of the gases causing sick house syndrome. Surface properties and pore characteristics of oxyfluorinated activated carbon fibers were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and adsorption properties of benzene gas were evaluated by gas chromatography (GC). As a result of XPS data, it was confirmed that the fluorine functional groups on activated carbon fibers surface increased with increasing the fluorine partial pressure. The specific surface area of all samples decreased after the oxyfluorination treatment, but the micropore volume ratio increased when the fluorine partial pressure was at 0.1 bar. The oxyfluorinated activated carbon fibers adsorbed 100 ppm benzene gas for an 11 h, it was found that the adsorption efficiency of benzene gas was improved about twice as much as that of untreated ones.

Advanced drinking water production systems, which not only good quality product water, but also provide easy management and mainenance of facilities, and operate on a smaller site area, have been expected to be developed for some time. We are going ahead with a program to deveop an advanced drinking water production system, using immersed membrane filtration combined with biological activated carbon, to meet the need described above. The demonstration plant tests been conducted with surface water from the Yodo-river since Dec. 1998 to measure treatment performance, reliability, and controllability of the system. The quality of product water has consistently remained at a very high level for about 2 years under controlled conditions. Results showed that the re-circulation granular biological activated carbon could suppress the increase of membrane pressure difference and promote a reduction of dissolved organic matter. (This work has been conducted along the ACT21 Programs.)
Improvement of water quality and Investigation of bacterial characteristics have been conducted in a pilot plant using biological activated carbon (BAC) in water treatment process at the downstream of the Nakdong River. Most of water control parameters were highly improved after passing through BAC. Approximately 54% of dissolved organic carbon was removed in coal-based BAC process. Bacterial biomass and bacterial production appeared $9.8{\times}10^8 CFU/g and 7.1mg-C/m^3$.hr in coal-based BAC, respectively. Predominant bacteria species grown in BAC were identified as Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium, Alcaligenes, Acinetobacter and Aeromonas species. Particularly Pseudomonas vesicularis was dominant in both coal-based and coconut-based BACs, while Pseudomonas cepacia was dominant in wood-based BAC.
In order to research the adsorption removal characteristics of trace organic by-products in disinfection of drinking water by biological activated carbon(BAC), water samples disinfect- ted with $Cl_2$, $O_3$ and $ClO_2$ after treatment by fluidized-bed system with water added with humic acid(10mg/L) were investigated the formation and the removal of trihalomethanes (THMs), and the trace organic by-products by gas chromatography(GC) II gas chromatography/mass selective detector(GC/MSD). Control was used by activated carbon(AC) and water added with humic acid(HA). The results were summarized as follow : The THMs removal effect of BAC by chlorination was in lower 90 % than that of control(HA), the sorts of oxidants formed by $Cl_2$ , $O_3$ and $ClO_2$ were that $O_3$ was very fewer than $Cl_2$ or $ClO_2$, and that $ClO_2$ was fewer than $Cl_2$. The trace organic by-products were esters and phthalates etc. Based on results above, it is concluded that BAC was appeared the more desirable adsorbtion-degradation removal characteristics than that of AC.
The Ag-impregnated activated carbon was produced from bamboo activated carbon by soaking method of silver nitrate solution. The carbonization and activation of raw material was conducted at $900^{\circ}C$. Soaking conditions are the variation of silver nitrate solution concentration (0.002~0.1 mol/L) and soaking time (maximum 24 h). The specific surface area and pore size distribution of the prepared activated carbons were measured. Also, NO and activated carbon reaction were conducted in a thermogravimetric analyzer in order to use for de-NOx agents of used activated carbon. Carbon-NO reactions were carried out with respect to reaction temperature ($20{\sim}850^{\circ}C$) and NO gas partial pressure (0.1~1.8 kPa). As results, Ag amounts are saturated within 2h, Ag amounts increased 1.95 mg Ag/g (0.2%)~ 88.70 mg Ag/g (8.87%) with the concentration of silver nitrate solution in the range of 0.002~0.1 mol/L. The specific volume and surface area of bamboo activated carbon of impregnated with 0.2% silver were maximum, but decreased with increasing Ag amounts of activated carbon due to pore blocking. In NO reaction, the reaction rate of impregnated bamboo activated carbon was retarded as compare with that of bamboo activated carbon. Measured reaction orders of NO concentration and activation energy were 0.63[BA], 0.69l[BA(Ag)] and 80.5 kJ/mol[BA], 66.4 kJ/mol[BA(Ag)], respectively.

A hydrogel electrolyte consisting of 6 M KOH aqueous solution, potassium polyacrylate (PAAK, 3 wt.%), and a hydrophilic silica OX50 (1 wt.%) was prepared to use as an electrolyte medium coated on a Scimat separator of activated carbon supercapacitor. The silica particle distributed homogeneously on surface pores of the separator to increase ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability of the hydrogel electrolyte. The silica addition also involved superior specific capacitance even at higher scan rates due to decrease in interfacial resistance between hydrogel electrolyte and activated carbon electrode.
