The completely mixed flow and plug flow (CAP) water quality model was developed for streams with discontinuous flows, a condition that often occurs in low base flow streams with in-stream hydraulic structures, especially during dry seasons. To consider the distinct physical properties of each reach effectively, the CAP model stream network can include both plug flow (PF) segments and completely mixed flow (CMF) segments. Many existing water quality models are capable of simulating various constituents and their interactions in surface water bodies. More complicated models do not necessarily produce more accurate results because of problems in data availability and uncertainties. Due to the complicated and even random nature of environmental forcing functions, it is not possible to construct an ideal model for every situation. Therefore, at present, many governmental level water quality standards and decisions are still based on lumped constituents, such as the carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD), the total nitrogen (TN) or the total phosphorus (TP). In these cases, a model dedicated to predicting the target concentration based on available data may provide as equally accurate results as a general purpose model. The CAP model assumes that its water quality constituents are independent of each other and thus can be applied for any constituent in waters that follow first order reaction kinetics. The CAP model was applied to the Geum River in Korea and tested for CBOD, TN, and TP concentrations. A trial and error method was used for parameter calibration using the field data. The results agreed well with QUAL2EU model predictions.

Mushroom waste medium refers to the waste biomass generated after mushroom cultivating. And, the burden of treatment on mushroom farmhouse is increasing due to the absence of appropriate treatment method and increase of treatment costs of the mushroom waste medium. In this study, in order to assess the energy value of mushroom waste medium by an anaerobic digestion, methane potential and anaerobic organic matter decomposition characteristics were investigated. The theoretical methane potential(Bth) of mushroom medium(MM) was 0.481 Nm3-CH4/kg-VSadded, and the Bth of mushroom waste medium(MWM) was 0.451 Nm3-CH4/kg-VSadded. The biochemical methane potential(Bu-exp) of MWM was increased by 18% from 0.155 for MM to 0.183 Nm3-CH4/kg-VSadded for MWM. In the reaction kinetics analysis by the Modified Gompertz model, the maximum methane production rate(Rm) was increased from 4.59 for MM to 7.21 mL/day for MWM and the lag growth phase time(λ) was decreased from 2.78 for MM to 1.96 days for MWM. In the reaction kinetics analysis by the parallel first order kinetics model, the easily degradable organic matter(VSe) content was increased by 5.89% and the persistently degradable organic matter(VSp) content was 2.03% in MWM, and the non-degradable organic matter(VSNB) content was decreased by 7.85%. Therefore, it was evaluated that the anaerobic digestion efficiency of MWM was increased. The anaerobic digestion efficiency of MWM was assessed to be more improved than that of MM.

Purpose: This study was undertaken to investigate the osteogenic induction potential of PGA & FBS mixture on a calvarial defect in the rabbit. Methods: Twenty New zealand white rabbit, weighing from 3.5-4kg were allocated into each of the three groups. Four 8 mm sized bone defects were made on the parietal bone by drilling. In group I, the bony defects were implanted with $50{\mu}m$ thickness film containing mixture of PGA and FBS. In group II, with PGA only film, & in group III, the bony defects were left with no implants. Results were evaluated by using morphologic change, radiographic study, biochemical study and histologic examination at 1 week (group I n=7, group II n=7, group III n=14), 2 weeks (group I n=6, group II n=6, group III n=12) and 3 weeks (group I n=7, group II n=7, group III n=14) following implantation. Results: In the morphologic & radiographic study, the formation and corticalization of callus were observed earlier in group I than in groups II and III (p < 0.05). In histological examination, group I showed more abundant and faster new bone formation than in group II and III. In biochemical analysis, group I displayed more activity than in group II and III. Group I also showed more abundant osteopontin, osteocalcin than groups II and III. Conclusion: In conclusion, the results demonstrate that the mixture of PGA and FBS has an effect on osteoblastic formation in the rabbit model. It is considered that further evaluation of long term results on resorption, immunologic tissue reaction and response of applied mixture in the human model will be needed.
The conventional settlement prediction method is not appropriate to model landfill settlement because it is very complex phenomenon. Biodegradation needs to be considered for long-term settlement since landfills are comprised of various organic materials and soils. As organic materials are decomposed, they directly influences on settlement producing LFG(Landfill Gas). Therefore, mathematical settlement prediction model is proposed based on the generated gas volume. As one of stabilization methods, leachate recycling system is adopted to model tests. Two model tests; one is leachate recycled, the other is non-recycled, are componented with proposed model and analysed regarding gas generation and settlement. The proposed mathematical model requires correction coefficients of 1.4 and 1.7 for non-recycled model and recycled, respectively. The recycled model showed 22% increase of long-term settlement more than the non-recycled model.
Auxins are essential in plant growth and development. The auxin-stimulated elongation of plant cells has been explained by the "acid-growth theory", which was proposed forty years ago. According to this theory, the auxin activates plasma membrane $H^+-ATPase$ to induce proton extrusion into the apoplast, promoting cell expansion through the activation of cell wall-loosening proteins such as expansins. Even though accepted as the classical theory of auxin-induced cell growth for decades, the major signaling components comprising this model were unknown, until publication of recent reports. The major gap in the acid growth theory is the signaling mechanism by which auxin activates the plasma membrane $H^+-ATPase$. Recent genetic, molecular, and biochemical approaches reveal that several auxin-related molecules, such as TIR1/AFB AUX/IAA coreceptors and SMALL AUXIN UP RNA (SAUR), serve as important components of the acid-growth model, phosphorylating and subsequently activating the plasma membrane $H^+-ATPase$. These researches reestablish the four-decade-old theory by providing us the detailed signaling mechanism of auxininduced cell growth. In this review, we discuss the recent research progress in auxin-induced cell elongation, and a set of possible future works based on the reestablished acid-growth model.
The propriety of the numerical model application was examined on Paldang resevoir and its inflow tributaries located in the center of the Korean peninsula and the long term water quality forecast of the oxygen profile was carried out in this syduy. The input data of the model was the capacity of the reservoir, catchment area, percolation, diffusion rate, vertical mixing rate, dissolution rate from the bottom of the reservoir, outflow of the resevoir, water quality measurement and meteorology data of the drainage basin, and the output result was the annual estimation value of the dissolved oxygen concentration and the biochemical oxygen demand. The modeling method is based on the measured or calculated boundary condition dividing the water area into several blocks from the macorscopic aspect and considering the mass balance in these blocks. As the result of the water quality forecast, it was expected that the water quality in Northern Han River and Paldang reservoir would maintain the recent level, but that the water quality in the Southern Han River and its inflow tributary would worsen below the grade 4 of the life environmental standard from around 2000 owing to the decrease of DO concentration and the increase of BOD concentration.

The evaluation of source potential and sink strength is the generally large and laborious sample size required to adequately assess anyone of the parameters in field-grown sweetpotato. For this purpose we used the rooted single-leaf cuttings with petioles, because the source and sink organs are restricted in this system. The rooted single-leaf cutting of sweetpotato provides a unique source-sink model system, and is established within about 50 days after planting. In this study, the sink potential of sweetpotato tubers was examined based on the expression of genes for starch synthesis (AGPase) and modification (SBEII and GBSSI) in single rooted leaf plant. The gene expression patterns of GBSSI, SBEII and AGPase at various developmental stages and in different types of root tissues presented. These results suggest that the rooted single-rooted method can be used an ideal model system to study physiological and biochemical mechanisms in sweetpotato.
In this study, reach boundaries in QUAL2E Model were set by the locations of point-waste discharge or tributary input and measured or direct calculated hydrologic factors were used in computation as much as possible. South Platte Experimental River in Colorado, USA was selected as a target river and data collected during September 1991 and January 1992 periods were used for calibration and verification, respectively. Constituents modeled in this study are 5-day carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand(CBOD$) and dissolved oxygen(DO). The good agreement was obtained between a calculated using this model and observed, less than 5% to DO and about 20% to CBOD$. According to the result of water-quality prediction, experimental river is classified as the 4th category by the criteria of environmental protection agency in the USA in 2001.
Medicago truncatula is a diploid legume plant related to the forage crop alfalfa. Recently, it has been chosen as a model species for genomic studies due to its small genome, self-fertility, short generation time, and high transformation efficiency. M. truncatula engages in symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing soil bacterium Rhizobium meliloti. M. truncatula mutants that are defective in nodulation and developmental processes have been generated. Some of these mutants exhibited altered phenotypes in symbiotic responses such as root hair deformation, expression of nodulin genes, and calcium spiking. Thus, the genes controlling these traits are likely to encode functions that are required for Nod-factor signal transduction pathways. To facilitate genome analysis and map-based cloning of symbiotic genes, a bacterial artificial chromosome library was constructed. An efficient polymerase chain reaction-based screening of the library was devised to fasten physical mapping of specific genomic regions. As a genomics approach, comparative mapping revealed high levels of macro- and microsynteny between M. truncatula and other legume genomes. Expressed sequence tags and microarray profiles reflecting the genetic and biochemical events associated with the development and environmental interactions of M. truncatula are assembled in the databases. Together, these genomics programs will help enrich our understanding of the legume biology.

We investigated the effect of KIOM-79, 80% ethanolic extract of herbal prescription isolated from Magnolia officinalis, Pueraria lobate, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, and Euphorbia pekinensis, on streptozotocin-induced diabetes in Sprague-Dawley rats. The rats were treated orally with KIOM-79 (500 mg/kg/day) 1) for 3 days prior to streptozotocin (60 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) injection or 2) for 9 weeks after establishing diabetes model to examine acute and chronic effects on hyperglycemia and biochemical variables, respectively. As a result, KIOM-79 had little effects on hyperglycemic changes in acute model. Sexual comparison, however, showed reduced hyperglycemia in female rats, especially 24 hours after streptozotocin injection with or without KIOM-79 pretreatment. In chronic model, streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemia was well established, but KIOM-79 treatment showed no statistically significant effects on all variables. Thus, based on our findings KIOM-79 might have little effects on streptozotocin-induced insulin-dependent diabetes although it has been known to have hypoglycemic and antidiabetic effects on non-insulin-dependent diabetes models.
