  • Water potential which is an physical chemistry and thermodynamic indicator expressed water status of plant root, stem and fruit could be use as a useful indicator for growth control of hydroponically grown muskmelon plant. Linear relationship was observed between EC and water potential of nutrient solution, consequently increment of EC related to the decreasing water potential and resulted with the alteration of water potential and solute potential of upper leaves. Rapid reduction in growth was observed in over 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of Cu concentration in the media and same tendency was recorded in the shoot fresh weight, root dry weight and chlorophyll content. Increment of Cu concentration in the nutrient solution leads to lower the growth rate and then the water potential of upper leaves. Turgor pressure was not affected the growth of hydroponically grown muskmelon and also Cu concentration of nutrient solution was not recognized the direct relationship to the growth characteristics of muskmelon. These results demonstrated that water potential of nutrient solution can be use as an useful indicator for water physiological comparison of plant growth in hydroponically grown muskmelon.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic is not over despite the emergency use authorization as can see recent COVID-19 daily confirmed cases. The viruses are not only difficult to diagnose and treat due to random mutations, but also pose threat human being because they have the potential to be exploited as biochemical weapons by genetic manipulation. Therefore, it is inevitable to the rapid antibody-based therapeutic platform to quickly respond to future pandemics by new/re-emerging viruses. Although numerous researches have been conducted for the fast development of antibody-based therapeutics, it is sometimes hard to respond rapidly to new viruses because of complicated expression or purification processes for antibody production. In this study, a novel rapid antibody-based therapeutic platform using single B cell sorting method and mRNA-antibody. High immunogenicity was caused to produce antibodies in vivo through mRNA-antigen inoculation. Subsequently, antigen-specific antibody candidates were selected and obtained using isolation of B cells containing antibody at the single cell level. Using the antibody-based therapeutic platform system in this study, it was confirmed that novel antigen-specific antibodies could be obtained in about 40 days, and suggested that the possibility of rapid response to new variant viruses.

  • We demonstrate a simple route to hybridize two different nanomaterials by using three-dimensional nanodishes that can be used as small plasmonic containers to host guest nanoparticles. Our nanodishes were fabricated using nanoimprint lithography and oblique-angle film deposition, and the guest nanoparticles were drop-casted onto the host nanodishes. Based on the proposed method, colloidal Au nanoparticles were assembled inside Au nanodishes in the form of a labyrinth. These Au nanoparticle-nanodish hybrids excited a strong surface plasmon resonance, as verified by a numerical simulation of the local field enhancement and by direct observation of the enhanced Raman signals. Our results point to the potential of the nanodishes as a useful platform for combining diverse nanomaterials and their functionalities.

  • Within the secondary metabolite class of flavonoids, which consist of more than 10,000 known structures, flavones define one of the largest subgroups. The diverse function of flavones in plants as well as their various roles in the interaction with other organisms offers many potential applications including in human nutrition and pharmacology. We used two genes, flavone synthase (PFNS-l) that converts naringenin into apigenin and flavone 7-O-methyltransferase (POMT-7) that converts apigenin into 7-O-methyl apigenin, to synthesize 7-O-methyl apigenenin from naringenin. The PFNS-l gene was subcloned into the E. coli expression vector pGEX and POMT-7 was subcloned into the pRSF vector. Since both constructs contain different replication origins and selection markers, they were cotransformed into E. coli. Using E. coli transformants harboring both PFNS-l and POMT-7, naringenin could be converted into 7-O-methyl apigenin, genkwanin.

  • Due to enhanced high IT (information technology) development, IT-based technology convergences such as IT/ET(electric technology), IT/BT(biology technology) and IT/NT(nano technology) are actively merging trend and their applications spread wide. In this paper PLC (power line communication), one of the merging IT, is investigated as one of the potential IT candidates for IT/ET and IT/BT convergence technology for DLC (direct load control) or bio-medical engineering such as ubiquitous health cares or D2H2 (distributed diagnosis and home health care).

  • Recently, several advanced flow visualization techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) including stereo PIV, holographic PIV, and dynamic PIV have been developed. These advanced techniques have strong potential as the experimental technology which can be used for verifying numerical simulation. In addition, there would be indispensable in solving complicated thermo-fluid flow problems not only in the industrial fields such as automotive, space, electronics, aero- and hydro-dynamics, steel, and information engineering, but also in the basic research fields of medical science, bio-medical engineering, environmental and energy engineering etc. Especially, NT Nano Technology) and BT (Bio Technology) strongly demand these advanced measurement techniques, because it is difficult for conventional methods to observe most complicated nano- and bio-fluidic phenomena. In this paper, the basic principle of these advanced visualization techniques and their practical applications which cannot be resolved by conventional methods, such as flow in automotive HVAC system, ship and propeller wake, three-dimensional flow measurement in micro-conduits, and flow around a circulating cylinder will be introduced.

  • "Biomimetics" is the study and simulation of biological systems with desired properties. In recent times, biomimetic surfaces have emerged as novel solutions for tribological applications in micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). These biomimetic surfaces are attractive for MEMS application as they exhibit low adhesion/friction and wear properties at small-scales. In this paper, we present some of the examples of biomimetic surfaces that have potential application in small-scale devices.

  • A method of functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) at room temperature using dry ozone gas is described. The resulting MWNT were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Combined to these analyses and solubility in liquids, it could be concluded that the dry ozone gas exposure introduces polar functional groups such as carboxylic groups to MWNT similar to acidic modification of MWNT. Particularly, the stable dispersion of MWNT in water after ozone treatment above a critical level could be obtained, implying potential bio-application. The hydrophilic functional groups on the MWNT introduced by ozone oxidation were helpful in improving the interaction with functional groups in PA6 such as $-NH_2$ and -CONH- resulting in improved mechanical properties.
