  • In this study, Biodegradable masterbatch (M/B) was prepared by different kinds and content of biodegradable catalysts added to oxo biodegradable plastics. The bio film was prepared by adding biodegradable M/B to the polyethylene pellet, and the change of physical properties by UV and heat treatment and the stability as food packaging material were confirmed. As a result of the physical property change, Fe salt and Al salt bio film was superior to Ni salt bio film about a decrease in physical property. However, considering the raw material cost and industrial availability, M/B containing Fe salt was selected and additional experiments were conducted by concentration. The bio films prepared with Fe salt M/B 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 wt% showed excellent physical properties.

  • Biochar is the carbon solid produced through the pyrolysis of a biomass from organic sources such as agricultural waste, animal manure, and sludge under limited or anaerobic conditions. Biochar has the effect of reducing greenhouse gases through the carbon sequestration method; additionally, biochar is known to function as a soil amendment. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the application of biochar on the growth characteristics of Chinese cabbage at Chungnam National University in Daejeon, Korea. The Chinese cabbage was grown for 50 days in a glasshouse in pots. A pruning branch was used to produce the bead and pellet forms of biochar through pyrolysis. The biochar was added to the soil at 0, 2, and 5% by weight. The Chinese cabbage with the 2% treatment of the bead form of biochar had the highest fresh weight ($149.43{\pm}15.92g\;plant^{-1}$) which was increased by 10% compared to the control ($136.91{\pm}31.46g\;plant^{-1}$). Moreover, for the 5% treatment of the bead form of biochar ($60.91{\pm}9.82g\;plant^{-1}$), the growth decreased by 57% compared to the control. As the content of the bead form of biochar increased, the shoot dry weight, leaf number, leaf length and lead width that appeared decreased. An increase in the total organic matter, Avail. $P_2O_5$, Ex. cation and EC was observed when the biochar content was increased. Our results support the application of 2% biochar in the bead form for increased growth of Chinese cabbage.

  • The rice husk contains nutrients which can be easily utilized by microorganisms, and also has a water retaining ability, which played a crucial part in enabling it to become a biofilter media. In this study, we evaluated the applicability of rice husk pellet bio-scrubber as a microbiological carrier. The pelletization experiment of rice husk as a biological media was performed using PVA and EVA binder. Also, the feasibility tests of rice husk as a biological media for odor removal were carried out in order to know whether rice-husk contains useful components as a media for microbiological growth or not. Lastly, a combined test for odor gas absorption and biological oxidation was conducted using a lab scale bio-filter set-up packed with rice-husk pellets as wet-scrubber. The major components of the rice husk were carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, while carbon acted as the main ingredient which comprised up to 23.00%. The C : N : P ratio was calculated as 45 : 1 : 2. Oxygen uptake rate, yield and decay rate of the rice husk eluent was calculated to be $0.0049mgO_2/L/sec$, 0.24 mgSS/mgCOD and 0.004 respectively. The most stable form of rice husk pellets was produced when the weight of the rice husk, EVAc, PVAc, and distilled water was 10 : 2 : 0.2 : 10. The prepared rice husk pellets had an apparent density of 368 g/L and a porosity of 59.00% upon filling. Dry rice husks showed high adsorption capacity for ammonia gas but low adsorption capacity for hydrogen sulfide. The bio-filter odor removal column filled with rice husk pellets showed more than 99.50% removal efficiency for NH3 and H2S gas. Through the analysis of circulation water, the prime removal mechanism is assumed to be the dissolution by water, microbial nitrification, and sulfation. Finally, it was confirmed that the microorganisms could survive well on the rice husk pellets, which provided them a stable supply of nutrients for their activity in this long-term experiment. This adequate supply of nutrients from the rice husk enabled high removal efficiency by the microorganisms.

  • In this study, we attempted to find alternative materials to rice bran (Japonica in Korea) such as rice bran pellet (Indica in Pakistan), corn distillers dried grains with solubles, sesame oil meal, and kapok meal for bottle cultivation of Pleurotus eryngii. Among all treatments, the total carbon content of the mixed substrate was the highest in T1 and the total nitrogen content was the highest in T4. The C/N ratio of T2 was comparable to that of the control and was higher than that of other treatments. The diameter of the pileus was the largest in T1 and T2, and the length of the stipe was the largest in T1 and T2. The yield and bio-efficiency of the fruit body were higher in T2 than in the other treatments, and were similar to that of the control plot. Therefore, the findings of our study suggest that rice bran pellet (Indica in Pakistan) could be a suitable alternative to rice bran (Japonica in Korea) for the cultivation of P. eryngii.

  • In this study, Pleurotus ostreatus No.42 was cultured in glucose-peptone-yeast-wheat bran medium using a previously reported novel rotary draft tube bioreactor. Versatile peroxidase (VP), a lignin-degrading enzyme, was isolated from a pellet-type mycelium culture grown in the medium for seven days. The VP was purified by sequentially applying ultra-filtration, DEAE-Sepharose CL-6B column, and Mono Q column. SDS-PAGE analysis revealed the molecular weight of VP to be 36.4 KDa with an isoelectric point of 3.65. The amino acid sequence was confirmed as VTCATGQTT. The purified VP was observed to possess the property of not only oxidizing Mn ions but also decomposing veratryl alcohol, a non-phenolic compound. The catalytic ability of VP is a subject for future research.

  • Seed pelleting is generally conducted in order to save the labor for sowing and thinning by enabling the precision mechanical planting. In the present study, the influence of physical and chemical properties of pelleting solid materials was investigated on carrot seed germination. Among the pelleting solid materials evaluated, dialite, kaolin, and talc showed low bulk density and high porosity. Bentonite and dialite carried high water holding capacities of 184% and 173%, respectively, while calcium carbonate, calcium oxide, and fly ash showed relatively low water holding capacity. The pH of kaolin (6.8) and dialite (7.4) were close to neutral, while limestone (12.8), calcium oxide (13.0), and bentonite (10.0) were highly basic. High electro-conductivity was shown in limestone and calcium oxide. EDS analysis revealed that the main elemental compositions of talc were Si (71.0%) and Mg (29.0%), and those of calcium carbonate were Ca (66.6%), Si (22.9%), and Mg (10.5%). High granulation capacity was observed from talc and the mixture of talc and calcium carbonate. Seeds pelleted with bentonite showed the highest hardness. The dissolving type of the pellet layer after imbibition was split type in talc, limestone, zeolite, and fly ash, melt type in calcium carbonate and calcium oxide, and swell type in bentonite and vermiculite. The shortest dissolving time of pellet layer was observed from calcium carbonate and kaolin. The germination speed $(T_{50})$ was delayed as the size of pelleted seeds increased. The optimum size of pelleting was 19 ratio in carrot.

  • This study was conducted in a glasshouse to examine the possibility of producing tomato plug seedlings in a newly-developed inert phenolic foam medium. Plug seedlings of 'Madison' tomato were grown in four pellet type media, Grodan rockwool, UR rockwool, phenolic foam LC, and phenolic foam LC-lite. Seed germination was checked for 7 days. Seedling growth was measured at 19 days after sowing. The greatest germination was obtained in the phenolic foam LC and phenolic foam LC-lite. Plant height, hypocotyl length, leaf area, dry weight, and fresh weight were significantly greater in the rockwool medium than those in the other media. However, the T/R ratio and stem diameter were the greatest in the phenolic foam LC than those in the other media. The total porosity and container capacity of the phenolic foam LC was higher than in the other media. The air space (%) was lowest in the phenolic foam LC. Overall, the phenolic foam LC and phenolic foam LC-lite produced seedlings with similar growth as the rockwool. These results suggested that both phenolic foam LC and phenolic foam LC-lite have potential to be used in production of plug seedlings of 'Madison' tomato.

  • The application of supplemental activated biochar pellet fertilizers (ABPFs) was evaluated by investigating key factors such as changes of surface paddy water and soil chemical properties and rice growth responses during the growing season. The treatments consisted of control, activated rice hull biochar pellet (ARHBP-40%), and activated palm biochar pellet (APBP-40%) applications. It was shown that the lowest NH4+-N and PO4--P concentrations were observed in surface paddy water to the ARHBP-40%, while the NH4+-N concentration in the control was abruptly decreased until 30 days after transplant in the soil. However, the lowest NH4+-N concentration in the blended biochar application was 9.18 mg L-1 at 1 day of transplant, but its ABPFs application was observed to be less than 1 mg L-1 at 56 days after transplant. The lowest PO4--P concentration in paddy water treated ARHBP-40% ranged from 0.06 mg L-1 to 0.08 mg L-1 until 30 days after transplant among the treatments. For the paddy soil, the NH4+-N concentration in the control was abruptly decreased from 177.7 mg kg-1 to 49.4 mg kg-1, while NO3--N concentration was highest, 13.2 mg kg-1 in 14 days after transplant. The P2O5 concentrations in the soils increased from rice transplants until the harvesting period regardless of the treatments. The highest K2O concentration was 252.8 mg kg-1 in the APBP-40% at 84 days after transplant. For the rice growth responses, plant height in the control was relatively high compared to others, but grain yield was not significantly different between the control and ARHBP-40%. The application of ARHBP-40% can minimize nitrogen and phosphorous application rates into the agro-ecosystem.

  • A simple and low cost autogenous-type extruder with a capacity of about 400kg/hr for rice bran-oil stabilization was developed. Specific energy consumption of the extruder was 0.060-0.070 KWH/kg of rice bran during extrusion. Rice bran was easily extruded to form flakes or pellets with an increase of bulk density. And also the desired extrusion temperature of $95^{\circ}C{\;}to{\;}150^{\circ}C$ could be easily obtained without any water addition when the rice bran was properly parametered with feed rate. The moisture content of bran was reduced and peroxidase was significantly inactivated after extrusion. The rice bran stabilized by the extrusion process was excellent in storage stability without considerable increase in free fatty acids.
