Species composition and bimonthly changes of fish community were investigated with the fishes collected by using both trammel nets and fish pots in the coastal waters of Sagyeoi, Jeju Island from May 2009 to February 2010. A total of 1,921 individuals (324,206 g in biomass), which comprise 10 orders and 35 families with 60 species, were collected during the study period. Among 60 species, 52 species were caught by trammel nets, 20 species by fish pots, and 12 species by both fishing gears. The five dominant species were Pseudolabrus sieboldi, Plotosus lineatus, Pteragogus flagellifer, Sebastiscus marmorattus and Diodon holocanthus in the aspect of total number of individuals, and Diodon holocanthus, Sebastiscus marmorattus, Stephanolepis cirrhifer, Pseudolabrus sieboldi, Parupeneus chrysopleuron in biomass. Each characteristics of fish community such as the number of species, the total number of individuals, and biomass were highly correlated with water temperature and salinity, which were all statistically significant at the 5% significant level. In other words, there was a tendency of increment of each characteristics according to a raise in water temperature or a decrease of salinity, and vise versa. The number of species, the total number of individuals, and biomass of fishes were highest in August and lowest in February.
We compiled and analyzed long-term time-series data collected in Korea to evaluate changes in oceanographic conditions and marine ecosystems near Jeju Island ($33^{\circ}00^{\prime}-34^{\circ}00^{\prime}\;N$, $125^{\circ}30^{\prime}-127^{\circ}30^{\prime}\;E$) from 1981 to 2010. Environmental data included depth-specific time series of temperature and salinity that have been measured bimonthly since 1961 in water columns at 175 fixed stations along 22 oceanographic lines in Korean waters by the National Fisheries Research & Development Institute, and time series of estimated volume transport of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) and Korea Strait Bottom Cold Water (KSBCW) for the period from 1961 to 2008. We analyzed the species composition in terms of biomass of fish species caught by Korean fishing vessels in the waters near Jeju Island (1981-2010). Data were summarized and related to environmental changes using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). The CCA detected major shifts in fish community structure between 1982 and 1983 and between 1990 and 1992; the dominant species were a filefish during 1981-1992 and chub mackerel from 1992 to 2007. CCA suggested that water temperature and salinity in the mixed layer and the volume transport of the TWC and the KSBCW were significantly related to the long-term changes in the fish community in the waters off Jeju Island. Fish community shifts seemed to be related to the well-established 1989 regime shift in the North Pacific. Further studies are required to elucidate the mechanisms driving climate change effects on the thermal windows and habitat ranges of commercial species to develop fisheries management plans based on reliable projections of long-term changes in the oceanographic conditions in waters off Jeju Island.
Chemical oxygen demand (COD), phytoplankton cell number and chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a), sediment mean grain size and ignition loss were studied to determine their temporal trends in the study area. Historical data of COD, cell number and Chl-a were gathered from the late 1960s or early 1980s to 1997, and trends in temporal domain were obtained from a simple regression. Sediments for grain size and ignition loss (as organic contents in sediments) were sampled from the Chokchon macrotidal flat bimonthly from September 1990 to November 1996, and were analyzed using the decomposition method of time series analysis. In general, the first three data showed increasing trends based on regression analysis. The trends of sediment grain size fluctuated in a neutral pathway while those of ignition loss yielded no increasing pattern. In contrast with the suggestions from Ahn and Choi (1998) who reported a coarsening variation in sediment grain size to be a cause of the directional and remarkable changes of macrofaunal communities in this area, we could not find such a corresponding variation pattern from our samples. In diagnosing eutrophication, a paradoxical phenomenon was encountered between the trends in water column (COD, cell number and Chl-a) and sediment (ignition loss) data. In this paper, we inferred the possible processes that produce the discrepancy. Some explanations and biological responses to eutrophication were predicted and discussed.
The environmental quality of the middle-reach of the Yahagi River has deteriorated in recent years. The nutrient dynamics within the reach were investigated to explain the changes. Seasonal pattern of $NO_3\;^--N$ concentration tended to stay low from April or May through July or August and then increased till winter or early spring, although there were peaks during high flow periods in mid-September, 2000 and late-August, 2001. No clear seasonal changes were observed in $PO_4\;^{3-}-P$ concentration. In the bimonthly records from 1980-2002, the DIN concentrations on January and March were higher than other months whereas the average daily flows on January and March were lower than they were in other months. The mean DIN concentration showed a high negative correlation with the median of average daily flow. In the past 50 years, the average concentration of DIN (excluding nitrite) was 0.21 mg $L^{-1}$ in 1952-1953. The concentration was about twice this high around 1980, and it is about three times this high at present. On the other hand, the average concentration of $PO_4\;^{3-}-P$ was below the limit of detection in 1952-53. However, it increased to almost 0.03 mg $L^{-1}$ around 1980, then decreased to approximately 0.016mg $L^{-1}$ at present. Our results suggest that the increasing DIN concentration is one of the causes of environmental change in the Yahagi River. We conclude that controlling the DIN concentration is essential for improving the river environment.
Seasonal variations of heat content in the neighbouring seas of Korea are estimated from the bimonthly normals of seawater temperature in the upper 300m for 15 years (1961~1975) at 192 stations. The heat is seasonally stored mainly in the upper 100m layer in the East Sea and in the whole water column in the West and South Seas of Korea. The annual range of heat content changes in the West Sea is almost the same as that in the East Sea. The annual phase of heat content variation lags behind that of sea surface temperature variation by one to three months. Due to the seasonal advections of heat by currents and winds, the annual amplitude of heat storage rate in the neighbouring seas of Korea is much larger than that of incoming radiation.
The seasonal changes in species composition of fishes in Kwangyang Bay were determined using bimonthly samples with a bottom trawl at five stations from February to December 1990. A total of 32 families 54 species, 9,497 individuals, and 65,838.2g of fishes were collected. Leiognathus nuchalis occupied 64.9% of the total number of individuals. L. nuchalis and Konosirus punctatus occupied 28.8% and 22.3% of the total biomass, respectively. The number of species, the number of individuals and the biomass were lowest in February. More than 20 species occurred during the period when the water temperature was higher than $12^{\circ}C$. The number of individuals was the highest in October. The biomass was the highest in April. The community structure of fish in Kwangyang Bay showed the seasonal variation according to Leiognathus nuchalis and Konosirus punctatus.

Species composition in the coastal waters off Ulleungdo of Korea were examined based on catches bimonthly collected by trammel net in 2013. A total of 711 individuals and 181.9 Kg were caught and catches were composed of 4 classes 15 orders 27 families 52 species including 44 Pisces, 4 Gastropoda, 3 Cephalopoda, and 1 Echinodermata. The dominant species in biomass were File fish (Thamnaconus modestus), Atka mackerel (Pleurogrammus azonus), and Greenling (Hexagrammos otakii). Data were summarized using hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) to examine similarity in species composition for each month, and community structure in Ulleungdo was divided into two groups. Community structures in February, April and December with low temperature and well-mixed surface water were distinguished from those in June, August and October with high temperature and strong stratification, which could be attributed to temporal changes in dominant species. Atka mackerel and Spear squid mainly caught in February and April, disappearing in June, August and October, and File fish outburst was shown in October. Because the water off Ulleungdo has been under low human pressure, it could be a good case study to elucidate effects of climate change on community structure and ecosystem in the East sea. Continuous surveys and further studies are required to demonstrate migration route and distribution of dominant species and long-term changes in community structure in the water of Ulleungdo.

Lake Enriquillo, the largest lake in the Dominican Republic, recently has undergone unusual water area changes since 2001 thus it has been affected seriously by local community's livelihood. Earthquakes and seismic activities of Hispaniola plate tectonic coupled with human activities and climate change are addressed as factors causing the increasing. Thus, a thorough study on relationship between lake area changing, and those factors is needed urgently. To do so, this study applied MESMA on MODIS data to extract water area of Lake Enriquillo during 2001 and 2012 bimonthly, with six issues 12-year. MODIS provides high temporal resolution, and its coarse spatial resolution is compensated by MESMA fraction map. The increase in water area was $142.2km^2$, and the maximum lake area was $338.0km^2$ (in 2012). Water areas extracted by two Landsat scenes at two different times with three image classification approaches (ISODATA, MNDWI, and TCW) were used to assess accuracy of MODIS and MESMA results; it indicated that MESMA water areas are same as ISODATA's, less than 0.4%, while the highest difference is between MESMA and TCW, 2.4%. A number of previously formulated hypotheses of lake area change were investigated based on the outcomes of the present study, though none of them could fully explain the changes.
The distributions of bacterial numbers and activities were studied bimonthly in 1987, at 3 sites in Lade Paro for elucidating the changes by disturbance of aquatic ecosystem. The total bacterial number was $0.3\times 10^{5}-13.1\times ^{5}$ cells/ml. The geterotrophic bacterial number had the variance from $1.9\times 10^{3}$ CFUs/ml to $3.1\times 10^{4}$CFUs/ml and the variation trend was similar to that of the total bacterial number. The proportions of alpha-glucosidase or beta-glucosidase releasing bacteria showed temporal changes rather than spatial changes. The proportions of phosphatase releasing bacteria had the maximum values, 22.7-83.0%, in July. The electron transpory system activity revealed the variation from $480{\mu}gO_{2}$/l/day to $1696{\mu}gO_{2}$/l/day and hagher values at upper stream and in summer. The degradation fraction by phosphatase was 0.4-9.1%/h and increased with temperature. The maximum value of heterotrophic activity was 8.2%/h in summer. Eventhough the distributions of total bacteria and heterotrophic bacteria were affected by the water disturbance but microbial activities and proportions of the specific enzume releasing bacteria were not affected.

To provide information needed for managing fish resources and protecting the ecosystem of Cheonsu Bay, bimonthly variations in species composition and abundance of fish eggs and larvae were investigated. The samples were collected by using bongo net at three different stations from February 2020 to December 2021. Fish eggs were divided into Engrualis japonicas and unidentified eggs, of which Engragulis japonicus accounted for 85.6% of the total eggs collected. A total of 21 species representing 17 families and 6 orders were collected. The three dominant species were Gobiidae spp, Thryssa hamiltonii and E. japonicus and these three species accounted for 74.1% in the total number of individuals. The number of species was highest in August, 2020 and lowest in February, 2020 and 2021; the number of individuals was highest in August, 2020 and lowest in February, 2020. Temporal changes in the abundances of pelagic eggs and larval fishes corresponded with temperature.
