  • Energy content, expressed as calories per gram, is an important part of the evaluation and marketing of foods in developed countries. Currently accepted methods of measurement of energy by U.S. food labeling legislation include measurement of gross calories by bomb calorimetry with an adjustment for undigested protein and by calculation using specific factors for the energy values of protein, carbohydrate less the amount of insoluble dietary fiber, and total fat. The ability of NIRS to predict the energy value of diverse, processed and unprocessed cereal food products was investigated. NIR spectra of cereal products were obtained with an NIR Systems monochromator and the wavelength range used for analysis was 1104-2494 nm. Gross energy of the foods was measured by oxygen bomb calorimetry (Parr Manual No. 120) and expressed as calories per gram (CPGI, range 4.05-5.49 cal/g). Energy value was adjusted for undigested protein (CPG2, range 3.99-5.38 cal/g) and undigested protein and insoluble dietary fiber (CPG3, range 2.42-5.35 cal/g). Using a multivariate analysis software package (ISI International, Inc.) partial least squares models were developed for the prediction of energy content. The standard error of cross validation and multiple coefficient of determination for CPGI using modified partial least squares regression (n=127) was 0.060 cal/g and 0.95, respectively, and the standard error of performance, coefficient of determination, bias and slope using an independent validation set (n=59) were 0.057 cal/g, 0.98, -0.027 cal/g and 1.05 respectively. The PLS loading for factor 1 (Pearson correlation coefficient 0.92) had significant absorption peaks correlated to C-H stretch groups in lipid at 1722/1764 nm and 2304/2346 nm and O-H groups in carbohydrate at 1434 and 2076 nm. Thus the model appeared to be predominantly influenced by lipid and carbohydrate. Models for CPG2 and CPG3 showed similar trends with standard errors of performance, using the independent validation set, of 0.058 and 0.088 cal/g, respectively, and coefficients of determination of 0.96. Thus NIRS provides a rapid and efficient method of predicting energy content of diverse cereal foods.

  • Evapotranspiration (ET) is an important process acrossa wide range of disciplines, including ecology, hydrology and meteorology. In this study, daily actual evapotranspiration (ETa) is based energy balance equation and considering high surface roughness length to estimate. This study was used variety of satellite data and ground observation data in Korea Peninsula from 1 January to 31 December 2009. In this study, sensible heat flux is one of the important parameters of ETa. Measurements of sensible heat flux are, however, complex and can't be easily obtained. So this study was used an empirical coefficient B to simplify estimate of sensible heat flux. The coefficient B in the ETa model requires a careful definition of aerodynamic resistance. So this study proposed ETa model considering aerodynamic resistance and high surface roughness length. This study was conducted validation in comparison of the proposed daily ETa results with Priestley-Taylor ETp.

  • Even though the fire performance-based design concept has been introduced for various structures and buildings, which have their own specific fire performance level, the uncertainties of input parameters always exist and, then, could reduce significantly the reliability of the fire modeling. Sensitivity analysis was performed with three limited input parameters, HRRPUA, type of combustible materials, and mesh size, which are significantly important for fire modeling. The output variables are limited to the maximum HRR, the time reaching the reference temperature($60^{\circ}C$), and that to reach limited visible distance(5 m). In addition, correlation coefficient analysis was attempted to analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the degree of relation between input and output variables above. Finally, the relationship among the three variables is also analyzed by the principal component analysis (PCA) to systematically analyze the input data bias. Sensitivity analysis showed that the type of combustible materials is more sensitive to maximum HRR than the ignition source and mesh size. However, the heat release parameter of the ignition source(HRR) is shown to be much more sensitive than the combustible material types and mesh size to both time to reach the reference temperature and that to reach the critical visible distance. Since the derived results can not exclude the possibility that there is a dependency on the fire model applied in this study, it is necessary to generalize and standardize the results of this study for the fire models such as various buildings and structures.

  • The short-term version of Industrial Source Complex Model(ISCST3) was evaluated for estimating short-term concentrations using criteria pollutant(SO$_2$, NO$_2$, CO, PM10) data from emission inventory of Young Tong area in Suwon for the year 2002. The contribution of pollutant concentration from point, line, area sources was found 21.8, 76.5 and 1.6%. Statistical parameters, such as correlation coefficient, index of agreement(IA), normalized mean square error(NMSE) and fractional bias(FB) were calculated for each pollutants. The model performance were found good for PM10(82%) and NO$_2$(69%), but poor for SO$_2$(34%) and CO(13%).

  • One algorithm has been developed for retrieving aerosol optical thickness from GMS-5 visible channel measurements, and then the algorithm was applied for obtaining the geographical distribution of aerosol optical thickness over East Asia during April 2002. Algorithm employs a look-up table based upon radiative transfer calculations with solar geometry, aerosol optical thickness, and surface albedo as inputs. Validation was conducted by comparing retrieved aerosol optical thickness with measured values from ground-based sky radiation measurements at Anmyon Do, Korea. It was found that the correlation coefficient is 0.71 with -0.03 of bias and 0.34 of root mean square error, suggesting that the algorithm developed in this study can be used for estimating aerosol optical thickness in a quantitative sense.

  • A planar vibratory gyroscope using electrostatic actuation and electromagnetic detection is proposed. The gyroscope has large sensitivity and can be fabricated by using surface micrimachining, bulk micromachining and conventional machining technology. In this paper, the gyroscope and the electromagnetic detecting system equations are derived to determine the output characteristics for the planar vibratory gyroscope using electrostatic acturation and electromagnetic detection. The maximum output is obtained when the driving frequencyequals to the detecting frequency. The resonant frequencies of the resonator are determined by the beam stiffness, i.e. the material constants and spring dimensions. The dimensions of the beams are determined using the analytic vibration modelling. The expected resonant frequencies are 200Hz both and the sensitivity is 62mV/deg/sec with 4000 electronic circuit amplifying coefficient for an AC drive voltage of 3V bias voltage of 15V and DC field current of 50 mA.

  • The aim of a benchmark study is carried out nine methods are employed for ULS analysis which implicitly predict the ultimate strength of aluminium stiffened panels under axial compression. For this purpose, DNV PULS, experimental and numerical data on the ultimate strength of panels were collected. Comparison of these experimental / numerical, DNV PULS / numerical, results with theoretical solutions by the candidate methods is performed. Also it's compared that ALPS/ULSAP program is based on closed-form formula for the ULS of plates and grillages under axial compression. It is considered that ALPS/ULSAP methodology provides quite accurate and reasonable ULS calculations by a comparison with more refined FEA. Comparison of these experimental data, numerical, computational software results with the simplified solutions obtained by the candidate methods is then performed. The model uncertainties associated with the candidate methods are studied in terms of mean bias and COV (i.e., coefficient of variation) against experiments and numerical solutions, and the relative performance of the various methods is discussed.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the drapability of polyester double jersey skirt Drapability is an important aesthetic properties of fabric on clothing construction, In this thesis weight, shearing, bending and non-isotropic characteristics of fabric were regarded as important factors of drapability, Especially for drapability of skirt, I investigated hem effect on various length of hem and skirt, The results were as follows, 1. The less the weight of fabric was, the greater drapability appeared. On fabrics, large pliability and modulus of shear have good drapability, 2. On clothing cutting, non-isotropic property affected on drapability of clothes remark-ably. Drapability order of clothes was greatest in bias direction, next in wale, course direction, 3. The shorter the skirt length and closer at hem line were the larger the hem effect influence upon the drapability of skirt was.

  • In this study, reliability analyses of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) corbels based on stochastic finite element were performed for the first time in literature. Prior to stochastic finite element analysis, an experimental database of 84 sfrc corbels was gathered from literature. These sfrc corbels were modeled by a special finite element program. Results of experimental studies and finite element analysis were compared and found to be very close to each other. Furthermore experimental crack patterns of corbel were compared with finite element crack patterns and were observed to be quite similar. After verification of the finite element models, stochastic finite element analyses were implemented by a specialized finite element module. As a result of stochastic finite element analysis, appropriate probability distribution functions (PDF's) were proposed. Finally, coefficient of variation, bias and strength reduction (resistance) factors were proposed for sfrc corbels as a consequence of stochastic based reliability analysis.
