  • This paper presents a bending propagating actuation using SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) spring for an effective shape transition of a flytrap-inspired soft morphing structure. The flytrap-inspired soft morphing structure is made from unsymmetric CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Prepreg) structure which shows bi-stability and snap-through phenomenon. For a thin and large curved bistable CFRP structure, SMA spring is more acceptable than SMA wire and piezoelectric actuator which used in previous investigations. A bending propagating actuation is proposed which can induce snap-through of the bi-stable CFRP structure effectively. From this research, effective shape transition of soft morphing structure is possible.

  • High quality BSCCO thin films have been fabricated by means of an ion beam sputtering at various substrate temperatures, $T_{sub}$, and ozone gas pressures, $PO_3$. The correlation diagrams of the BSCCO phases appeared against $T_{sub}$ and $PO_3$ are established in the 2212 and 2223 compositional films. In spite of 2212 compositional sputtering, Bi220l and Bi2223 phases as well as Bi2212 one come out as stable phases depending on $T_{sub}$ and $PO_3$. From these results, the thermodynamic evaluations of ${\Delta}H$ and ${\Delta}S$ S, which are related with Gibbs' free energy change for single Bi2212 or Bi2223 phase are performed.

  • The bistable thin cylindrical shell is developable structure with the ability to transition between its two stable configurations. This structure offers significant potential applications due to its excellent deformability. In this paper, the composite thin cylindrical shell consisting of the composite layer and the piezoelectric layer was investigated. The material and geometric parameters of the shell were found to influence its stable characteristics. The analysis model of the composite thin cylindrical shell incorporating the piezoelectric layer was developed, and the expressions for its strain energy were derived. By applying the minimum energy principle, the impact of the electric field intensity on the bi-stable behaviors of the cylindrical shell was analyzed. The results showed that the shell exhibited the bistability only under the appropriate electric field strength. And the accuracy of the theoretical prediction was verified by simulation experiments. This study provides an important reference for the application of deployable structures.

  • Crystallization behavior of platinum minerals within Pt-Sb-Bi bearing ore magmas and mineralogical properties of the existing minerals were investigated at 1,00$0^{\circ}C$ by synthetic experiment. High purity reagents were used as starting materials and silica tubings as containers. Reaction products were analysed by reflecting microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron probe microanalysis, and micro-hardness test. Stable minerals at 1,00$0^{\circ}C$ are platinum, electron probe microanalysis, and micro-hardness test. Stable minerals at $1,000^{\circ}C$ are platinum, stump-flite (PtSb) and geversite (PtSb2). They are in equilibrium with liquid (ore magma). Platinum contains considerable amount of Sb of 7.5 at.%, whereas Bi only up to 0.9 at.%. Pure stumpflite is hexagonal with space group P63/mmc, and unit cell parameters are a=4.1318(6), c=5.483(1)$\AA$. VHN50=417(2)$\AA$. Geversite has cubic structure with space group Pa3. Cell parameters are a=6.4373(2)$\AA$ and Vicker hardness values VHN50=663.5 (566~766). Both stumpflite and geversite show solid solution and their end-members are Pt48.8Sb40.7-Bi10.5, and Pt33.7-Sb59.8Bi6.5, respectively. Although stumpflite (m.p. $1,043^{\circ}C$) and unnamed PtBi (m.p. 7$65^{\circ}C$) do not form a complete solid solution at $1,000^{\circ}C$, they are known, at $600^{\circ}C$, to form a continuous solid solution. Geversit (m.p. $1,226^{\circ}C$) also forms complete solid solution with insizwaite (m.p. $660^{\circ}C$). Unit cell dimensions of the minerals above increases with the amount of Bi substituting for Sb.

  • BSCCO thin films fabricated by using the evaporation method. As a result, although the composition of Bi2212 was set up, the phase of Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223 was formed. The formation area of these stable phases is indicated as inclined line in the direction of the right lower end from the Arrhenius plot of the substrate temperature-oxidation gas pressure, and are distributed in very small area. The activation energy for the phase transformation from the Bi2201 to the Bi2212 is estimated in terms of the Avrami equation.

  • Single phase crystalline powders of $Mg_3Sb_2$ and $Mg_3Bi_2$ were prepared by mechanical alloying Mg, Sb and Bi metals with planetary ball milling for 24~48 h. The compositions of starting raw materials for single phase $Mg_3Sb_2$ and $Mg_3Bi_2$ were 3Mg : 1.8Sb and 3Mg : 1.6Bi, respectively. Two types of mechanically alloyed powders obtained were mixed at some ratios for the fabrication of $Mg_3Sb_2-Mg_3Bi_2$ composites and then hot pressed under uniaxial pressure of 70 MPa at 723 K for 1 h. The main phase of composites was a stable phase similar to $Mg_3Bi_2$ phase with a small amount of Bi phase. The distributions of Sb and Bi elements on EDS mapping images were discontinuous and their compositional contours were clear, which means that the hot pressed specimens were composites composed of two compounds of $Mg_3Sb_2$ and $Mg_3Bi_2$.
