effect of pounding and friction between oscillators upon global response behaviors of a bridge system under seismic excitations are examined in this study. For convenience an idealized mechanical model is proposed which still retains the dynamic characteristics of bridge motions using multiple oscillators, Each oscillator is consisting of four degrees-of-freedom to implement the pounding between the adjacent oscillators and friction at movable supports, The impact element and bi-linear model are utilized for pounding and friction at movable supports. The impact element and bi-linear model are utilized for pounding and friction respectively. Also the effects of abutments are investigated by adding the addition oscillators consisting of two degrees-of-freedom. The effects of pounding and frictions are determined using the proposed model and the effect of the abutment is also verified, It is found that both pounding and friction affect the bridge responses significantly while the first pounding occurs between the abutment and the nearby oscillator.

In this paper, the optimal tuning of a cross-coupled controller linked with the feedforward controller is studied to reduce contouring and tracking errors of a bi-axial servomechanisms by using the previously developed integrated tuning method. The CCC system for an arbitrary curve, which is combined with the feedforward controller, is formulated by a state-space based on a series of linear motion trajectories. An optimal tuning problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained optimization problem including relevant controller parameters of the servo. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed optimal tuning procedure, linear and circular motion experiments are performed on the xy-table. Experimental results confirm that both tracking and contouring errors are significantly reduced by applying the proposed control and tuning system.
This paper presents topology optimization of geometrically and materially nonlinear structures using a bi-directional evolutionary optimization (BESO) method. To maximum the stiffness of nonlinear structures under prescribed design load, the complementary work is selected as the objective function of the optimization. An optimal design can be obtained by gradually removing inefficient material and adding efficient ones. The proposed method can be applied to a series of geometrically and/or materially nonlinear structures. The results show considerable differences in topologies and stiffness of the optimal designs for linear and nonlinear structures. It is found that the optimal designs for nonlinear structures are much stiffer than those for linear structures when large design loads (which result in significantly nonlinear deformations) are applied.
Communication in wireless sensor networks comprising a plurality of sensor nodes located in an ad hoc environment is unidirectional in that data gathered by sensor nodes are transmitted to a sink node and not vice versa. In those networks, it is not possible for a server or a gateway to send commands to the sensor nodes to determine whether some previously received data are valid when the data indicate unusual conditions, which makes it difficult to make appropriate reactions to the unusual situations. This paper proposes and implements a TDMA-based sensor network communication protocol named BiWSLP(Bidirectional Wireless Sensor Line Protocol) supporting bidirectional communication capability. The BiWSLP is an extension of the WSLP, a unidirectional sensor network communication protocol based on the TDMA protocol. To test the feasibility of the proposed BiWSLP, we construct a virtual bridge management system capable of sending commands to sensor nodes as well as collecting data from the sensor nodes. Based on the test results of the virtual bridge management system, we show the applicability and advantages of the BiWSLP in terms of energy efficiency and bidirectional communication capability.

In this study, a compact series-fed center-fed open-stub (SFCFOS) linear array antenna for K-band applications is presented. The antenna is composed of a single-line 10-element linear array. A symmetrical Chebyshev amplitude distribution (CAD) is used to obtain a low sidelobe characteristic against a uniform amplitude distribution (UAD). The amplitude is controlled by varying the width of the microstrip patch elements, and open-ended stubs are arranged next to the last antenna element to use the energy of the radiating signal more effectively. We insert a series-fed stub between two patches and obtain a low mutual coupling for a 4.28-mm center-to-center spacing ($0.7{\lambda}$ at 21 GHz). A prototype of the antenna is fabricated and tested. The overall size of the uniform linear array is $7.04{\times}1.05{\times}0.0563{\lambda}_g^3$ and that of the Chebyshev linear array is $9.92{\times}1.48{\times}0.0793{\lambda}_g^3$. The UAD array yields a ${\mid}S_{11}{\mid}$ < -10 dB bandwidth of 1.33% (20.912-21.192 GHz) and 1.45% (20.89-21.196 GHz) for the CAD. The uniform array design gives a -23 dB return loss, and the Chebyshev array achieves a -30.68 dB return loss at the center frequency with gains of 15.3 dBi and 17 dBi, respectively. The simulated and measured results are in good agreement.
A real-time, continuous-scale image interpolation method is proposed based on bi-linear interpolation with directionally adaptive low-pass filtering. The proposed algorithm has been optimized for hardware implementation. The original bi-linear interpolation method has blocking artifact. The proposed algorithm solves this problem using directionally adaptive low-pass filtering. It can also solve the severely problem by selection choosing low-pass filter coefficients. Therefore the proposed interpolation algorithm can realize a high-quality image scaler for various imaging systems, such as digital camera, CCTV and digital flat panel display, to name a few.
Dynamic characteristics of catenary that supplies electrical power to high-speed trains are investigated. A simple catenary is composed of the contact and messenger wires connected by droppers possessing bi-directional stiffness properties. For slender, repeating structures such as catenary, both the wave propagation and vibration properties need to be understood. The influence of parameters that determine catenary dynamics are investiaged through numerical simulations involving finite element models. The effects of the tension and flexural rigidity of the contact wire is first investigated. The effects of dropper characteristics are then investigated. For linear droppers wave propagation as well as modal properties are determined. For large catenary motion, droppers can be modeled as bi-directional elements possessing low stiffness in compression and high stiffness in tension. For this case, impulse response is computed and compared with the cases of linear droppers. It is found that the catenary dynamics are primarily determined by contact wire tension and dropper properties, with large responses observed in 5∼40 Hz frequency range. In particular, the dropper stiffness and spacing are found to have dominant influence on the response frequency and the wave transmission characteristics.
The sintering shrinkage behaviors of low temperature cofired ceramics (LTCC) and resistors were compared using commercial LTCC and thick-film resistor pastes, and factors influencing the camber of cofired resistor/LTCC bi-layers were also investigated. The onset of sintering shrinkage of the resistor occurred earlier than that of LTCC in all resistors, but the end of sintering shrinkage of the resistor occurred earlier or later than that of LTCC depending on the composition of the resistor. The sintering shrinkage end temperature and the sintering shrinkage temperature interval of the resistor increased as the RuO2/glass volume ratio of the resistor increased. The camber of cofired resistor/LTCC bi-layers was obtained using three different methods, all of which showed nearly identical trends. The camber of cofired resistor/LTCC bi-layers was not affected by either the difference in linear shrinkage strain after sintering between LTCC and resistors or the similarity of sintering shrinkage temperature ranges of LTCC and resistors. However, it was strongly affected by the RuO2/glass volume ratio of the resistor. The content of Ag and Pd had no effect on the sintering shrinkage end temperature or sintering shrinkage temperature interval of the resistor, or on the camber of cofired resistor/LTCC bi-layers.
Talairach atlas consists of three orthogonal sets of coronal, sagittal, and axial slices. This atlas has recently an important role as a standard brain atlas in diagnosing disease related with brain function and analyzing cause of brain disease. The 3D digital volume data set reconstructed from the atlas is widely applied to visualization and quantitative analysis of results processed in the digital computer. This paper represented application method of bi-linear interpolation technique, proposed tri-planar interpolation algorithm for 3D volume data reconstruction of Talairach atlas. And we implemented Talairach atlas editor and discussed problems in volume reconstruction of Talairach atlas. The bi-linear method was applied to only one set of the slices and considered the on intensity value in the interpolation process. The tri-planar technique concurrently uses three orthogonal sets of slices with the same information of brain structures. Talairach atlas editor visualized three sets. of atlas slices on the same coordinate and had editing function. Using the atlas editor, we represented problems in volume reconstruction by showing inconsistency of brain structures among three sets of atlas slices.
