This study examined a PD controller and its application to automatic berthing control of an unmanned surface vehicle (USV). First, a nonlinear mathematical model was established for the maneuvering of the USV in the presence of environmental forces. A PD control algorithm was then applied to control the rudder and propeller during an automatic berthing process. The algorithm consisted of two parts, namely the forward velocity control and heading angle control. The control algorithm was designed based on longitudinal and yaw dynamic models of the USV. The desired heading angle was obtained using the "line of sight" method. Finally, computer simulations of automatic USV berthing were performed to verify the proposed controller subjected to the influence of disturbance forces. The results of the simulation revealed a good performance of the developed berthing control system.

In order for an autonomous ship to arrive near the pier and automatically berth without the help of a tugboat or pilot, it is necessary to recognize the pier and calculate the thruster output and output angle for berthing to the pier at a fixed berthing speed under given external force conditions. Therefore, in this study, the external force and moment acting on the ship while berthing were analyzed, and the thruster output calculation for automatic berthing was designed and the basic concept for the development of the automatic berthing program was designed. The wind pressure applied to the hull by the wind while the ship is berthing was calculated based on the wind pressure area and the wind direction angle and the turning moment to rotate the ship according to the transverse force of the ship was calculated. Considering the force acting on the ship and the turning moment during berthing, a theoretical formula was presented to calculate the thruster output and output angle for berthing parallel to the pier, and the turning due to other variables was controlled by the PID controller. In addition, the basic concept for program development was presented by analyzing the input elements necessary for the theoretical formula.

As the growth of world trade has surged rapidly over the past years, the number is expected to continue growing over the coming years. Although the transportation costs can be reduced by using larger vessels, however, new berthing structures have to be constructed in order to cater for the larger vessels. This leads to a need for researching on designing a better berthing structure. For optimization of berthing structure design, we need to provide a better estimation of berthing energy than the previous methods in the existing guidelines. In this study, several berthing parameters were collected from previous works and researches. Moreover, the scenarios were selected efficiently by using a sampling technique. First, the berthing energy was calculated by executing 150 numerical simulations. Then, the numerical simulation results were compared with the results calculated by existing methods quantitatively to investigate the sensitivity of the berthing parameters and the accuracy of existing methods. The numerical method results have shown some deviation with respect to the existing method results in which the degree of deviation varies with the methods and the tendency of differences is dependent on certain berthing parameters. Then, one of the existing methods which has shown a small deviation was selected as a representative method and applied with several safety factors to obtain a suitable safety factor for the design.

Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV)'s berthing and unberthing is the most difficult maneuvering tasks and have the highest risk of accidents. In this paper, we designed a berthing/unberthing control algorithm given human joystick command for an USV equipped with a waterjet and a bow thruster. The berthing and unberthing maneuvers are performed remotely by a joystick operator at the Ground Control Center (GCC) where the status of USV and environmental situation can be monitored. We interpret the human joystick commands into USV's desired speed, yaw rate, and heading angle commands. next, we developed a control algorithm for the desired target values of MIMO actuators (engine speed, bucket step, nozzle angle, and bow thruster state) to follow the interpreted commands. The validity of the control algorithm is confirmed through simulations and sea trials at Gwang Am port.

This study develops an automatic berthing control algorithm for ships with a bow thruster and a stern thruster as well as a rudder. A nonlinear mathematical model for low speed maneuvering of ships is used to develop a MIMO(multi-input multi-output) nonlinear control algorithm. The algorithm consists of two parts, which are forward velocity control and heading angle control. The control algorithm is designed based on the longitudinal and yaw dynamic models of ships. The desired heading angle is obtained by the so called "Line of Sight" method. An optimal control force allocation method of the rudder and the thrusters is suggested. The nonlinear control algorithms are tested by numerical simulations using MATLAB, and shows good tracking performances.

This paper addresses the trajectory tracking problem for ship berthing using sliding mode technique. With significant potential advantages: insensitivity to plant nonlinearities, parameter variations, remarkable stability and performance robustness with environmental disturbances, the multivariable sliding modes controller is proposed for solving trajectory tracking of ship in harbor area. In this study, the ship position and heading angle are simultaneously tracked to guarantees that the ship follows a given path (geometric task) with desired velocities (dynamic task). The stability of the proposed control law is proved based on Lyapunov theory. The proposed approach has been simulated on a computer model of a supply vessel with good results.

As trade cross the world is increasing these days, safe and effective management of harbour system is becoming important issue. With this background, the development of automatic time-domain simulation programme for ship berthing operation has been being peformed and PD (Proportional Derivative) controller has been used to control the speed and the heading angle of ships. This paper provides feasibility study for developing the time-domain simulation programme for berthing operation of ships with analysing advantages and drawbacks of the two different mathematical models, one is for low advance speed of ships by Kose (1984) and the other is MMG model for normal advance speed, through the simulations with various initial heading angles and positions of the ship.
In recent trends of the enlargement and specialization, container ship, LNCG, PCC and passenger ship which have relatively large hull and superstructure above the water line, are already being operated in the world It is very important information for the safety operation of these vessels to estimate the ship's performance under the specific wind condition while berthing, unberthing or low-speed sailing. In this paper, the effect of wind force and moment acting on the training ship HANNARA is investigated by using the numerical calculations. The results of drift angle and counter rudder angle with the relative wind direction and force, the critical wind velocity with the ratio of wind velocity and ship's speed and maximum heeling angle with the wind velocity are shown The presented results can be applied directly to T/S HANNARA in berthing maneuver and avoiding typhoons, and utilized as an educational materials.

In accordance with the development plans of Ulsan harbor, Ulsan new harbor will be contructed considering supporting Ulsan harbor as a safe berthing and departure at single buoy mooring(SBM). In this study, we used a full-mission ship handling simulator adopting 300,000 DWT VLCC manoeuvered at the planned Ulsan SBM. Five masters who have had a long experience of ship maneuvering were called to carry out the simulations, of which each scenario were tried one, completed total of 68 times. The marine traffic safety was assessed in terms of 1) the closest point of approach(CPA) to other SBM and breakwater in the vicinity and the probability of crossing the restricted area of the closest SBM and fairway limit, 2) subjective evaluation such as the mental burden and the maneuvering difficulty of shiphanders, and 3) the opinions of shiphandlers. From the result of this simulation, we have a conclusion as follows; First, because crude oil berthing angle is so small by current S-OiL Co. crude oil buoy by SK Co. No 3 crude oil buoy different view SK Co. No 3 crude oil buoy and interference of current KNOC crude oil buoy, Berthing is impossible, and Emergency departing is very dangerous too operation impossible. Second it is desirable that SK Co. No 2 and No 3 Single buoy Mooring that do different view controls position so that to be not put in straight line each other. Third, SK Co. No 1 and 2 single buoy mooring that do different view to Onsanhang berthing and departing is seized by single buoy mooring by external force ship that set sail does faith control need.
