Settlement of larvae, growth, and survival of juvenile abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) were examined after feding of 5 species of benthic diatoms (Cocconeis suctellum, Navicula sp Nitzschia longissima Bacillavia paxillifera, Licmophora flabellata). All of the benthic diatoms were isolated from natural populations on plastic plates for the abalone. The settlement of larvae, shell growth, and survival rate of juvenile abalone varied by diatoms species. The highest settlement rate of larvae was $43.1\%$ with the Cocconeis suctellum diet. Daliy growth rate reached a maximum at 64.1 ${\mu}m/day$ with the Navicula sp. diet and a minimum at 22.4 ${\mu}m/day$ with the Licmophora flabellata diet. Survival rate of the juvenile abalone was highest at $62.0\%$ with the Navicula sp., Cocconeis suctellum , and Nitzschia longissima diets. Survival rate of the Juvenile abalone was significantly higher than the control group with mixed diatom population diets (P<0.05). Therefore, diatom . species composition in diets can be a controling factor for the settlement, growth, and survival rates of Juvenile abalone.

Surirella atomus Hustedt 1955, surirelloid diatom, were obtained from Hampyeong Bay, Mu-an, in the west coast of Korea. We describe the first record of S. atomus in Korea and report its ultrastructure and molecular characteristics for the first time. For molecular analysis, rbcL gene and cob gene were sequenced. This species is very small in size, making it difficult to observe its morphological features under a light microscope. Even with a scanning electron microscope, it has no unique structure in the valve. It is morphologically very simple. This rare species was known as a marine benthic species. However, it appears to be widely distributed in marine, freshwater, and brackish environments according to the literature documenting this species. In terms of phylogeny, S. atomus has been tentatively linked to Petrodictyon gemma, but the phylogenetic placement of S. atomus seems to be still uncertain, in a manner that is similar to S. febigeri. However, morphological observations derived from this study suggest that this species belongs to the genus Surirella.
The compositions of amino acid in 6 monocultured benthic diatoms used in aquaculture of Haliotis discus hannai were analyzed, and effects of 15 artificial synthetic amino acids on the settlement and metamorphosis of H. discus hannai larvae. Results showed that the content of L-aspartic acid was highest in all diatoms, and that of L-glutamic acid was second high. In experiment using settlement slat without benthic diatom attached, the highest settlement rate (33.3 ${\pm}$ 8.8%) was obtained with L-glutamic acid, and a higher value (16.7 ${\pm}$ 3.3%) was found with L-aspartic acid at 24 h after experimental commencement, compared to that of control (8.6 ${\pm}$ 5.1%). 80 h later the metamorphosis rates of L-glutamic acid (86.7 ${\pm}$ 10.7%) and L-aspartic acid (80.0 ${\pm}$ 3.3%) groups were higher than control group(0) and other amino acids significantly. The response rate of L-glutamic acid was the highest (62.0%), and those of L-aspartic acid (30.0%) and L-threonine (25.3%) groups were also significantly higher than control group. In the experiment using settlement slat with benthic diatom attached, the best effect of various amino acids on induction of larval settlement was obtained with L-glutamic (82.0 ${\pm}$ 6.9%) and L-aspartic acid (78.7 ${\pm}$ 5.1%) at 24 h after experimental commencement. The settlement rates of L-histidine, L-leucine, L-lysine, L-methionine, L-phenylalanine, and L-tyrosine groups were significantly lower than control group. The same differences in the metamorphosis rate at 56 h after experimental commencement and in the response rate were found. It should be noted that after 80 h the metamorphosis rates of L-histidine (74.0 ${\pm}$ 12.0%) and L-lysine (87.0 ${\pm}$ 8.8%) declined rapidly compared to those of 56 h (8.0 ${\pm}$ 12.0%; 7.7 ${\pm}$ 12.0%).
River water quality and organisms have a very close relationship with the human living environment and health, so it is very important to ensure and maintain the ecological integrity of the aquatic ecosystem. In that sense, benthic diatoms have relatively little mobility, can explain the effects of long-term exposed pollution sources, and are very suitable indicator organisms for river ecosystem evaluation. Diatom ecologists have been developed various diatom indices to assess water quality and stream ecosystem over the world. However, they so far have insufficient identification of taxa, are strongly regional, and are difficult to apply as they are domestically. Unfortunately, there has not been developed an independent diatom index suitable for the Korean stream. Therefore, management of water quality and aquatic ecosystem suitable for domestic rivers can be made, and development or improvement of comprehensive multivariate diatom index for the integrated assessment of water quality and aquatic ecosystem is urgently needed.

Carbon stable isotope ratios of producers varied in lake ecosystems. In tile present study, we tried to estimate the seasonal variations of carbon isotope ratios of phytoplankton and benthic diatoms in a strongly acidic lake ecosystem. Lake Katanuma is a volcanic, strongly acidic lake (average pH of 2.2), located in Miyagi, Japan. Only two algal species dominate in Lake Katanuma; Pinnularia acidojaponica as a benthic diatom, and Chlamydomonas acidophila as a green alga. Carbon isotope values of P. acidojaponica varied seasonally, while those of particulate organic matter, which were mainly composed of C. acidophila remained fairly stable. The differences suggested that $CO_2$ gas was more frequently limited for P. acidojaponica than C. acidophila, since high density patches of benthic diatoms were sometimes observed on the lake sediment. Generally, carbon concentration mechanisms (CCMs)of microalgae can fix bicarbonate in lakes, and affect the carbon isotope values of microalgae. While, in Lake Katanuma, CCMs of the microalgae may scarcely function because of high $CO_2$ gas concentration and low pH. This is the reason for low seasonal amplitude of carbon isotope values of phytoplankton relative to those in other lakes.
To find unrecorded diatom species, random materials were collected from the freshwater, brackish water, and coastal waters. Benthic and periphytic diatoms were sampled from twelve localities. Thirteen species belonging to eight genera are newly added to the national flora of diatom. In the intertidal areas, the five species are new to Korea, Anaulus minutus Grunow, Anaulus simonsenii Witkowski & Metzeltin, Eunotogramma laeve Grunow, Eunotogramma productum Grunow, and Nitzschia subcapitellata Hustedt. The following two species are new from brackish waters, Chamaepinnularia krookiformis (Krammer) Lange-Bertalot & Krammer and Cymatoneis ovalis Heiden. The following four species are new from mountain peatlands, Geissleria ignota (Krasske) Lange-Bertlaot & Metzeltin, Chamaepinnularia hassiaca (Krasske) Cantonati & Lange-Bertalot, Chamaepinnularia mediocris (Krasske) Lange-Bertalot and Pinnularia linearidivergens Kulikovskiy, Lange-Bertalot & Metzeltin. The following two species are new from river or streams, Cymbella hustedtii var. compacta Krammer and Cymbella stigmaphora ${\emptyset}strup$.
In a survey of periphytic and benthic diatoms in Korea, diatoms of genus Stauroneis were found to be widely distributed over freshwaters, rivers and streams, lakes and reservoir, wetlands in lowland and mountain areas, and even subaerial terrestrial habitats. However, it is clear that Stauroneis diatoms prefer peatlands, which can be more or less acidic or oligotrophic environments in freshwaters. In this study, Staurones diatoms were collected mainly from mountain peatlands. Twenty five taxa were confirmed to be species, while some specimens remain unidentified. Approximately twenty species have been reported in Korea in the past, but these are largely S. anceps Ehremberg sensu lato, S. phoenicenteron (Nitzsch) Eherenberg sensu lato, and their infraspecies variety or forma. Sixteen of the twenty five Stauroneis taxa found in this survey are reported for the first time in Korea.
Studies on species compostion, promary production of benthic algal assemblage were carried out along a channel of the salt marsh near Inch'on, Kyonggi Bay, Korea. Possible biological, physical and KDICical factors controlling the aglal assemblage were also examined. The oveall diatoms were encountered one hundred and thirty-seven taxa, of which the dominant species were Paralia sulcata and Cymatosira belgica. These two species accounted for 32.6% relative abundance throughout the study period. Diatom taxa had no clear seasonal pattern in abundance analysis. But at the algal blooming period in spring, euglenoids occurred with a high abundance. The chlorophyll a content of benthic algae showed definite seasonal pattern. The algal biomass of the appeared to influence the spatial fluctuation in the algal biomass of the channel was regulated primarily by water content of sediment. Grazing by zoobenthos apperaed to influence the spatial fluctuation in the algal biomass of the sediment surface. The algal photosynthesis was measured in the laboratory with oxygen method. Photo-synthetic rate was independent of the temperature under the lower irradiance. The gross production from March to November was estimated to be 190g C/m2 at the channel slope. Photosynthetic efficiency was 0.37% on the basis of the photosyntherically active radiation for the study period.
Morphology of Achnanthes alteragracillima Lange-Bert. was studied with scanning electron microscopy in epilithic samples from the Kwang River (Kwangchun), Kyungsangbuk-Do, Korea. The species was characterized by the external raphe terminal fissure deflecting up to valve margin, the internal raphe proximal endings slightly deflecting to the opposite direction each other and biased hyaline area at the valve pole. It could be distinguished from A. minutissima K tz., closely related species, in having not straight external raphe terminal fissures, and from A. convergens H.Kob. in having a biased hyaline area at the valve pole and not a convergent striae arrangement at the pole of the raphe valve.
Benthic diatoms are known as a good food for shellfish in nature and in commercial hatchery of Jeju Island, Korea. Grammatophora marina is commonly found as dominant benthic micro-algae in Jeju coastal waters throughout the year. To know the best growth conditions of this species, culture was done in terms of three parameters; water temperature, salinity and nutrients. Each parameter was controlled by temperature of 15, 20 and 25°C; salinity of 25, 30 and 35 psu; and nutrient concentrations of 50, 100 and 200%. F/2 media was used with artificial seawater for the culture, which was continued for two weeks with L:D cycle 12:12 by using fluorescent light. Maximum specific growth rate was recorded 1.68 d–1 at temperature of 25°C with salinity of 35 psu and nutrient concentration of 200% on 6th day during the culture period. Maximum biomass was also observed 4.9 × 105 cells mL–1 in the same condition. This species may belong to the euryhaline and eutrophic habitat with warm condition. For nutritional aspects of this species, protein, lipid and carbohydrate were measured. The value of protein, lipid and carbohydrate was 4.96%, 15.82% and 5.65%, respectively. The antioxidant activities of 80% methanolic extract were 46.7%, 23.7% and 23.8% on DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylydrazy) radical, superoxide anion radical and hydrogen peroxide scavenging, respectively. Percentage metal chelating activity was 81.2%. Enzymatic extracts of Alcalase and Ultraflow showed remarkable scavenging activities on DPPH radical (86.5% and 57.2%, respectively), and superoxide anion scavenging activities were 45.3% and 41.4% from Kojizyme and Viscozyme extracts, respectively. Extract of Protomex revealed 24.8% activity on hydrogen peroxide and Neutase showed 30.8% on hydroxyl radical scavenging effects. Celluclast and Viscozyme extracts showed 33.2% and 32.1% activities on nitric oxide scavenging, respectively, while Alcalase showed 61.5% on metal chelating. This species contains higher lipids among the biochemical compounds and higher metal chelating activities from both 80% methanolic and enzymatic extracts.
