Background and Objectives : The aim of this study is verify the correlation between benign laryngeal mucosal disease and metabolic syndrome. Materials and Method : Data for patients diagnosed with benign laryngeal mucosal disease and metabolic syndrome from 2006 to 2015 were selected for analysis from the National Health Insurance Service database. Results : The prevalence of Metabolic syndrome was 2,179,785 out of 6,437,051 patients (33.86%). The prevalence of benign laryngeal mucosal disease was 516,594 out of 6,437,051 patients (8.03%). Metabolic syndrome was a risk factor for benign laryngeal mucosal disease [hazard ratio: 0.99, 95% confidence interval: 0.984-0.997] after adjusting for age and other variables including age, gender, smoking status, alcohol intake, exercise, body mass index, and diabetes. The number of metabolic syndrome components was also risk factor. Conclusion : Metabolic syndrome was related to the incidence of benign laryngeal mucosal disease. However this correlation did not seem to be high.
Background: Patients with long-standing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC). Colon cancer risk in IBD increases with longer duration and greater anatomic extent of colitis, the presence of primary sclerosing cholangitis, family history of CRC and degree of inflammation of the bowel. This study aimed to characterize the histopathological pattern of benign colorectal diseases among Saudi patients and to highlight age and gender variations of lesions as base line data for future studies to investigate the link between benign/IBD and colorectal cancers in the local population. Materials and Methods: The materials consisted of 684 biopsies, reported as benign (excluding malignancies and polyps) at the Department of Pathology, King Fahad Hospital, Madinah, Saudi Arabia from January 2006 to December 2013. Data collected and entered in MS-Excel and were analyzed using SPSS-20. Results: Of 684 colorectal tissues reviewed, 408 specimens (59.6%) were from male patients and 276 specimens (40.4%) were from females giving a male: female ratio of 1.5:1. Age of the patients ranged from 4 to 75 years with a mean of 39.6 years. The most frequent histologic diagnosis was a chronic non specific proctocolitis followed by ulcerative colitis, accounting respectively for 52.6% and 31.7% of all cases. These were followed by Crohn's disease 22 (3.2%), ischemic bowel disease 20 (2.9%), diverticular disease 14 (2%), eosinophilic colitis 12 (1.7%) and solitary rectal ulcer 12 (1.7%). A minority of 21 patients (3.1%) were cases of acute nonspecific proctocolitis, schistosomiasis, tuberculosis, volvulus and pseudomembranous colitis. Conclusions: These data show that although chronic non specific proctocolitis and ulcerative colitis were the dominant diagnoses, Crohn's disease, ischemic bowel disease and diverticular disease also existed to a lesser extent and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of benign colorectal diseases. This study provides a base line data for future studies which would be taken up to investigate the link between benign/IBD and colorectal cancers in the local population.
In order to review the clinicopathologic characteristics of the thyroid cancer associated with benign thyroid disease, we evaluated 47 patients treated between January, 1993 and September, 1997 at the Chonnam National University Hospital. In those period, we had operated a total of 690 thyroidectomy of which 320 were diagnosed as thyroid cancer. Forty three(91.4%)occurred in women and four(8.5%)occurred in men. The mean age at operation was 46.7years(range, 15 to 76 years). Forty three of the 47 cancers(91.4%) were papillary carcinomas while 4(8.5%)were follicular. Twenty four of the 47 patients (51%) were occult thyroid carcinomas measured less than 1 cm in diameter. The concurrent benign disease were nodular goiter(n=17), Hashimoto's thyroiditis(n=16), follicular adenoma(n=10), Graves' disease(n=2) and diffuse hyperplasia(n=2). Thirty one patients were diagnosed by preoperative FNAC and they underwent total thyroidectomy. Three were diagnosed by frozen section examination at the time of operation. Among them, one underwent total thyroidectomy and two underwent subtotal thyroidectomy. Eight cases revealed lymph node metastases and 2 cases extended to surrounding muscles. In conclusion, concurrent thyroid cancers and benign thyroid disease are not uncommon and a regular ultrasonic follow-up with selective aspiration cytologic examination is recommaned to enhance their diagnostic accuracy.
During 7 years, from Jan. 1986 to Dec. 1992, authors studied 208 cases of the surgically managed thyroid nodules at the Department of General Surgery, Han Kang Sacred Heart Hospital and obtained the following results. 1) Among the total 208 cases, male to female ratio was 1:11.2 in benign thyroid diseases and 1:9 in malignant thyroid diseases. The benign disease was prevalent between second and forth decade comparing with malignant disease between third and fifth decade. 2) The most common duration of illness was 3 months(26.0%). 3) Palpable neck mass was the most common chief complaint(100%). Palpitation. fatigue, and sweating were common complaints in patient with benign disease, and fatigue, palpitation, and sweating in malignant disease in decreasing order of frequency. 4) 55.8 % of lesions were in right lobe, 33.2% in left lobe, 5.8% in diffuse type, 4.8% in bilateral lobes, and 0.5% in isthmus. 5) The most common size of nodule was between 2.0cm and 3.9cm in diameter, which consisted of 55.1% of benign disease and 48.0% of malignant disease. 6) 86.5% of thyroid function test showed euthyroidism, 10.1% hyperthyroidism, and 3.4% hypothyroidism. 7) Thyroid scanning of 176 patients revealed cold nodules in 92.5% of benign diseases and in 92.9% of malignant diseases. 8) The most common benign disease was adenomatous hyperplasia(62.7%), and the most common malignant disease was papillary adenocarcinoma(80.0%). 9) Fine needle aspiration cytology was performed in 91 cases, and it showed 69.0% of sensitivity, 90.3% of specificity, and 83.5% of accuracy. 10) Frozen biopsy was performed in 109 cases. and it showed 93.9% of sensitivity, 100.0% of specificity, and 98.2% of accuracy. 11) The most commonly performed operation was unilateral lobectomy(including unilateral lobectomy with isthmectomy)(79.1%) in benign disease. and total thyroidectomy(62.0%) in malignant disease. 12) Postoperative complication showed 5 cases of wound infection (2.4%), 3 cases of transient hypoparathyroidism(1.4%), 3 cases of transient hoarseness(1.4%), 2 cases of postoperative bleeding(1.0%), 1 case of permanent hypoparathyroidism(0.5%), 1 case of permanent hoarseness(0.5%), and 1 case of postoperative pneumonia (0.5%).
Proteinuria is common in pediatric and adolescent patients. Proteinuria is defined as urinary protein excretion at levels higher than $100-150mg/m^2/day$ in children. It can be indicative of normal or benign conditions as well as numerous types of severe underlying renal or systemic disease. The school urine screening program has been conducted in Korea since 1998. Since then, numerous patients with normal or benign proteinuria as well as early stage renal diseases have been referred to the hospital. Benign proteinuria includes orthostatic proteinuria and transient proteinuria. Most causes of proteinuria can be categorized into 3 types: 1) overflow, 2) tubular, and 3) glomerular. Although treatment should be directed at the underlying cause of the proteinuria, prompt evaluation, diagnosis, and long-term monitoring of these pediatric patients can prevent potential progression of the underlying disease process. This article provides an overview of proteinuria: its causes, methods of assessment, and algorithmic suggestions to differentiate benign from pathologic renal disease.

Lateral canal benign paroxysmal vertigo (BPPV) causing dizziness is a common cause is not found while continuing to appeal for vertigo is a typical disease. It is characterized by acute stand up, brief and rotatory vertigo attacks provoked by change in head position. Treatment requires only one treatment visit in most patients. However, there are significant numbers of patients who require multiple treatment visits for relief. The purpose of this study benign paroxysmal positional vertigo treatment of type affect is to analyze the cause. Dizziness and vertigo patient's in patients admitted to the dizziness center of lateral canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo were classified. In patients with lateral canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and accompanying lateral 15 treatment affects disease were investigated. March 2008 to November 2010 lateral canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo 166 people cure rate of patients was investigated. First time the success rate of 74.1%, twice times the success rate of 12.0%, three times the success rate of 9.6%, more than three times the success rate was 4.2%. Affecting factor treatment of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo in post-traumatic, medicine disease, headache, cerebral infarction, small vessel disease, vestibulopathy, (p<0.05). Statistical analysis using SPSS (version 12K) in coefficient measure through descriptive statistical of cross table.

Background and Objectives: Benign vocal fold lesions have shown various voice onset types on phonation, however, they have not been documented yet. We studied to know the relationships between benign vocal fold lesions and voice onset types. Materials and Method: 114 subjects were evaluated by using videokymographic examinations. The subjects were classified into three types: normal, contact, and open types according to the patterns of voice onset types on phonation. Benign vocal fold lesions were investigated and voice onset types were compared between normal and disease groups. Voice parameters were obtained from and compared in all subjects to assess acoustic and aerodynamic factors. Results: The normal type among onset types were more than contact type or open type in both normal and disease groups. Disease group showed many contact and open types when. compared with normal group. Vocal nodule and vocal polyp were showed many normal and contact types, however, sulcus vocalis was almost showed open type among voice onset groups. The values of mean flow rate (MFR) of contact type were significantly higher compared to normal type in disease group (p<0.05). Shimmer of contact type was higher than normal type in diseasegroup, but the difference was not significant (p=0.057). Conclusion: Benign vocal fold lesions were related to the various types of voice onset. The various types of voice onset should be considered when benign vocal fold lesions were examined.

Introduction: 585 nm Pulsed dye laser (PDL) laryngeal surgery is based on the photodynamic characteristics of selective photothermolysis and photoangiolysis and recently considered to be the treatment for a variety of benign laryngeal disease. Objective: To review the indications and outcome of office-based 585nm PDL surgery and summarize new developments. Method: Retrospective study involving 402 patients was performed, The PDL surgery could be applied to various laryngeal diseases such as laryngeal papilloma, vocal fold dysplasia, laryngeal granuloma, vocal polyp, capillarectasia, scarred vocal fold and sulcus vocalis. Results : The physiologic properties of the vascular specificity of PDL provide many advantages and appear to be effective for laryngeal treatment. The PDL resulted in precise, selective coagulation of the microvasculature without damage to the surrounding tissue. Therefore PDL surgery is safe and effective for office-based treatment of benign laryngeal disease and for all patients regardless of their overall medical condition. Conclusion: PDL surgery provides potential benefits and advantage for treating common benign laryngeal disease.
Benign monomelic amyotrophy (BMA) is a benign motor neuron disease in which amyotrophic change is confined to either the upper or the lower extremities. Numerous cases of BMA have been reported from Japan and India. However, only a few cases have been reported from other regions, including South Korea. Here we report a rare case of late-onset BMA in Korean male using conventional diagnostic approach with magnetic resonance imaging and electromyography. The patient received ten sessions of manual therapy, which focused on strengthening of the left ankle. At two-month follow up, weakness was still isolated to the patient's left ankle. There were no signs of disease progression.
Vertigo and dizziness are common symptoms with various etiologies and pathogeneses. Vertigo is an illusion of motion due to disease of the vestibular system, usually a sense of rotation. Dizziness, a term that represents a wide range of non-vertigo symptoms, is commonly associated with non-vestibular disorders including old age, cardiac syncope, orthostatic hypotension, metabolic disease, anxiety, and drugs. Vertigo should be determined whether the cause is central or peripheral. Peripheral vertigo is usually benign but central vertigo is serious and often require urgent treatment. The careful history and detailed physical examinations(pattern of nystagmus, ocular tilt reaction, head impulse test and positional tests such as Dix-Hallpike maneuver) provide important clues to the diagnosis of vertigo. Most of patients have benign peripheral vestibular disorders - vestibular neuritis, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), and Meniere's disease. BPPV is a leading cause of peripheral vertigo and can easily be cured with a canalith repositioning maneuver. In this review, a focus is on the differential diagnosis of common vestibular disorders with peripheral and central causes.
