  • This study was carried out to investigate some mechanical properties for wood rational utilization of heartwood and sapwood in radiata pine according to basic density, ring width and proportion of latewood which were grown in New Zealand. This result were summarized as follow: Heartwood showed 35.78(MPa) of the compression strength parallel to the grain while sapwood showed 42.08(MPa). The modulus of rupture in static bending was higher in sapwood showing 86.12(MPa) than in heartwood 72.99(MPa) Heartwood had 7.38(GPa) for the modulus of elasticity in static bending and sapwood 8.17(GPa). As the basic density and proportion of latewood increased: compression strength parallel to the grain, MOR and MOE in static bending had a tendency to increase. As ring width increased, the mechanical properties decreased.

  • When ceramics are used as the parts of an engine and a machine, the tribological properties are very important. For the preparation of the resistance material for wear applications by the method of Reaction-Bonded Sintering, metal silicon and carbon black are mixed up into SiC powder, and Al2O3 and Fe2O3 are put as an additive. As the general properties, the bending strength and water absortion are measured in the normal temperature and the phase changies are investigated with XRD. The property of the resistance for wear applications is measured with the amount of friction and wear, friction coefficient and maximum asperties. And, the surface of wear is observed with SEM. With the results of this study, the optimal mol ratio of Si : C and the suitable quantity of the mixture of SiC are 7 : 3 and 40 wt%, respectively. In the case of the addition of Al2O3 (2 wt%), the resistance for friction and wear applications is prominent. The bending strength showed the highest peak when Al2O3 (4 wt%) and Fe2O3 (4 wt%) were added. The properties of friction and wear were related with the propagation velocity of crack rather than the bending strength.

  • Two different casting speeds of 60 and 80mm/min are adopted to determine the effect of casting speed on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Mg-Si/Al hybrid material prepared by duo-casting. The obtained hybrid material has a uniform and straight macro-interface between the pure Al side and the Al-Mg-Si alloy side at both casting speeds. When the casting speed is increased to 80mm/min, the size of primary α phases in Al-Mg-Si alloy decreases, without change of shape. Although the Al-Mg-Si alloy produced at higher casting speed of 80mm/min shows much higher ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and 0.2 % proof stress and lower elongation, along with higher bending strength compared to the case of the 60mm/min in casting speed, the tensile properties and bending strength of the hybrid material, which are similar to those of pure Al, are the same regardless of the increase of casting speed. Despite the different casting speeds, deformation and fracturing in hybrid materials are observed only on the pure Al side. This indicates that the macro-interface is well-bonded, allowing it to endure tensile and bending deformation in all hybrid materials.

  • This study will not only prove experimental dynamic properties which are classified to slump, compressed strength, bending strength and toughness index blast-furnace cement concrete with polypropylene (PP) fiber that refer properties and volume of it, but also establish a basic data in order to use PP fiber reinforced blast-furnace cement concrete. The slump didn't changed by PP fiber volume $5kgf/m^3$ because of flexibility of fiber in despite of loose mixing. The reason why the slump decreased steadily by PP fiber volume $3kgf/m^3$ was rising contact surface of water. The compressed strength indicated a range of 19.49~26.32 MPa. The tensile strength indicated a range of 2.10~2.44 MPa. The bending strength was stronger about 3~16 % in case of mixing with PP fiber volume than normal concrete. The flexure strength indicated a range of 4.30~4.83 MPa. The toughness indicated a range of $0{\sim}19.88N{\cdot}mm$ and was stronger about 6.7 times in case of PP fiber volume $9kg/m^3$ than PP fiber volume $1kg/m^3$. The pavement with PP fiber volume over such a fixed quantity in the roads of a respectable amount load can have a effect to prevent not only resistance against clack but also rip off failures.

  • Mechanical properties of composite panel made with 3mm thick Apitong(Dipterocarpus grandiflorus) veneer on each face of particleboard core of 4 different specific gravity were determined. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Measured MOR and MOE increased with an increased in specific gravity of particleboard core. 2. Test results showed that the difference in bending properties between flatwise bending and edgewise bending was present. The average MOE value of flatwise loading was higer than that of epdgewise loading. But it was shown reverse tendency in MoR and MOE. 3. The delamination between face veneer and core particle was found in flatwise bending but nell in edgewise. 4. These composite panel could be substituted for plywood and other panel materials in furniture making as considered suitable allowable stress and bending strength.

  • Nowadays, the usage of high strength steel has been growing in automobile industry mainly as structural parts since for its lightweight and high strength properties the oil crisis happened. Owing to poor formability, complex-shaped high-strength steel components are invariably produced through hot press forming. The high-strength steel sheets are in so me instances used with an Al-Si-coating with a view to prevent scaling of components during hot press forming. How ever, friction and fracture characteristics of Al-Si-coated high-strength steel during hot press forming process have not yet been investigated. In this paper, the formed parts which were formed in hot bending process were investigated by using EDS. SEM and nano indenter in order to analysis the coating layer behavior.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of heat treatment on physical properties of 0.016' and 0.016' x 0.022' stainless steel wires. Temperature of heat treatment had intervals of $50^{\circ}C$ from $400^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$, and time of heat treatment were 3, 6 and 9 minutes. Tensile tests were measured by ultimate tensile strength and yield strength. Bending tests were assessed by maximum bending force, recovery force, and stiffness. Torsion test was evaluated by torsion cycle until wires were fractured. The results were as follows: 1. In round wires, the highest value of ultimate tensile strength and yield strength were recorded of heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$. In rectangular wires, the highest value of ultimate tensile strength were after 9 minutes at $400^{\circ}C,\;450^{\circ}C$ and 3, 6 minutes of heat treatment at $50^{\circ}C$, yield strength were the highest value after 3, 6 minutes of heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$. 2. In both round and rectangular wires, maximum bending force and recovery force were the highest values after 6 minutes of heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$. In round wires, highest value of stiffness were formed after 9 minutes at heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$. In rectangular wires, the highest value of stiffness were for 6 minutes in $500^{\circ}C$. 3. In rectangular wires, torsion cycle was minimum after 6 minutes of heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$. 4. In all of tension, bending, and torsion tests, the heat treated wires were softened over at $700^{\circ}C$. 5. In all of tension, bending, and torsion tests, physical properties of the wires were more influenced by the temperatures than the duration of the heat treatment.

  • TRIP steel has got attention in automobile industry because of its high strength and high formability. However, the information on deformation behavior of TRIP steel, including bending and springback, is not enough until now. In this research, the V-die bending experiment and analysis have been done to obtain the information of springback of TRIP steel. And a new numerical method, where elastic modulus is varied with the change of the strain, was suggested. Tensile test for TRIP steel was done to get tensile properties as well as strain dependency of elastic modulus of the material. Strain-dependency of elastic modulus was used the numerical analysis of V-die bending and unbending process to predict springback amount. The results were compared with experiment, showing reasonable agreement. Through the analysis of V-die bending as well as draw bending of TRIP steel, the proposed scheme with variable elastic modulus was proven to well predict the deformation behavior of TRIP steel during bending and springback.

  • This study was carried out to investigate quantitatively the relationship between the degree of rebar corrosion and the strength of reinforced concrete beams. After producing equations for the relationship between both the tensile properties of rebars and bond properties and the corrosion percentage of rebars. Finite element analysis and bending tests were conducted for RC beams damaged by corrosion of tension main rebar. As a result, it was made that the strength of RC beams damged by corrosion could be practically simulated by FEM using experimentally determined material representing the bond properties and the mechanical properties of corroded rebars.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of plantation thinning on physical and mechanical properties of Larix kaempferi. Tree samples were obtained from unthinned, moderately, heavily thinned plantations where located in Kwangryung forest research stand. The effects of different thinning methods on the bending and parallel to grain compressive strengths of Larix kaempferi were explored. Average latewood ratio with various thinning treatments revealed the trend of unthinning < moderate thinning < heavy thinning treatment. Average annual ring width with various thinning treatments showed the trend of unthinning < moderate thinning or heavy thinning treatment. Average bending and parallel to grain compressive strengths with various thinning treatments revealed the trend of unthinning > moderate thinning > heavy thinning treatment. This indicates that thinning treatment reduces average bending and parallel to grain compressive strength properties.
