Vibration Control of Laminated Composite Beams Using Active Constrained Layer Damping Treatment (능동구속감쇠 기법을 이용한 복합적층보의 진동 제어)

  • The flexural vibration of laminated composite beams with active and passive constrained layer damping has been investigated to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived fro flexural vibrations of symmetrical,. multi-layer laminated beams. The damping ratio and model damping of the first bending mode are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. The direct negative velocity feedback control is used for the active constrained layer damping. It is shown that the flexible laminated beam is more effective in the vibration control for both active and passive constrained layer damping. and this paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations with constrained layer damping.

  • Dynamic characteristics of smart laminated composite plates with passive constrained layer damping have been investigated to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived for flexural vibrations of symmetrical, multi-layer laminated plates. The damping ratio and modal damping of the first bending and torsional modes are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. The structural damping index(SDI) is introduced to determine the optimum placement of viscoelastic patch. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite plate under vibrations.

  • In this study, flexural strength properties of SC shear walls were investigated through static pushover test. Failure modes and stiffness characteristics of SC shear walls under lateral loads were inspected by analyzing the experimental results. Main failures of unstiffened SC shear walls were found to be the type of bending shear failure due to the unbonding of the steel plate at the concrete interface. The ductility capacity of SC structures was also confirmed to be improved, which is considered to be a confining effect on steel plates in the longitudinal behavior of SC shear walls.

  • A procedure for the computation of the load carrying capacity of perfectly plastic plates in bending is presented. The approach, based on the kinematic theorem of limit analysis, requires the evaluation of the minimum of a convex, but non-smooth, function under linear equality constraints. A systematic solution procedure is devised, which detects and eliminates the finite elements which are predicted as rigid in the collapse mechanism, thus reducing the problem to the search for the minimum of a smooth and essentially unconstrained function of nodal velocities. Both Kirchhoff and Mindlin plate models are considered. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by means of some examples.

  • It is very important to pay careful attention to construction of bridge/earthwork transition zone for high-speed railway. The transition zone of the railway is the section which roadbed stiffness is suddenly varied. Differences in stiffness have dynamic effects and these increase the forces in the track and the extent of deformation. An abrupt change of stiffness across two adjacent track portions cause irregular settlement of roadbed, track irregularity, lack of girder bending moment and reduction of lateral resistance. Especially on high-speed railway, track irregularity of transition zone cause sincere effect to track stability and train safety. And so continuous maintenance is needed. To verify this effect and to improve transiton zone capacity, In situ test, track irregularity and train acceleration test were performed on high-speed railway bridge/earthwork Transiton Zone.

Nonlinear response of laterally loaded rigid piles in sand

  • This paper investigates nonlinear response of 51 laterally loaded rigid piles in sand. Measured response of each pile test was used to deduce input parameters of modulus of subgrade reaction and the gradient of the linear limiting force profile using elastic-plastic solutions. Normalised load - displacement and/or moment - rotation curves and in some cases bending moment and displacement distributions with depth are provided for all the pile tests, to show the effect of load eccentricity on the nonlinear pile response and pile capacity. The values of modulus of subgrade reaction and the gradient of the linear limiting force profile may be used in the design of laterally loaded rigid piles in sand.

  • This experimental investigation was conducted to examine the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns. The columns were subjected to a constant axial load and a cyclic horizontal load-inducing reversed bending moment. The variables studied in this research are the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement ($P_s$ =0.96, 1.44 per cent) and axial load ratio (0.05, 0.1, 0.2 P/$P_o$). Test results show that bridge columns with 50 per cent higher amounts of transverse reinforcement than that required by seismic provisions of ACI 318-02 showed ductile behaviour. For bridge columns with axial load ratio(P/$P_o$) less than 0.2, the ratio of $M_{max}$ over $M_{aci}$, nominal moment capacity predicted by ACI 318-02 provisions, is consistently greater than 1 with approximately a 20 percent margin of safty.

  • A SMA actuator fabricated in this paper generates the large force and it's structure is very simple. The SMA actuator was fabricated by small size with diameter of 4mm and length of 38mm and also it's actuations toward all the directions can be acquired because of three SMA springs which was fabricated with diameter of 1.2mm and 30 turns. We showed into applicability to smart catheter by analyzing accurately the dynamic characteristics such as heading angle, bending angle, force, displacement. For verifying control capacity of the fuzzy controller, we compared Fuzzy controller with PID controller by simulation.

  • Structural dynamic characteristics and aeroelastic stability of a small-scale bearingless rotor system have been investigated. A flexbeam is one of the most important component of bearingless hub system. It must have sufficient torsional flexibility as well as baseline stiffness in order to produce feathering motion. In the present paper, a cross-shaped composite flexbeam has been proposed for a guarantee of torsional flexibility and flapwise and lagwise bending stiffness. One dimensional elastic beam model was used for the construction of a structural model. Equivalent isotropic sectional stiffness was used in the blade model, and the flexbeam was regarded as anisotropic; which has ten independent stiffness quantities. CAMRAD II has been used for the analysis of structural dynamic characteristics of the bearingless rotor system. Rotational natural frequencies and aeroelastic stability at hovering have been investigated. Analysis result shows that the cross-shaped flexbeam has the rotational natural frequency tuning capacity.
