  • At present, European railways in U.K., Sweden, and Belgium have taken serious efforts to improve railway services by implementing a service evaluation system. Not only do they measure the service-related performance of a railway system, but also operate an incentive system according to the results of service-related performance. This performance evaluation system can be also used to provide basic data for other policies such as fares, subsidies and track user charges etc. After the restructuring process of Korean national railways, therefore, although it is expected to face many difficulties in the future, it is desirable to implement a performance evaluation system for securing the long-term growth of Korean railway industry.

  • It is important to initialize Image Plate (IP) completely for removing residual latent image by sodium lamp for reliability and repeatability of computed radiography (CR) system. The purpose of this study was to evaluate latent images of computed radiography (CR) images respect to delay time after erasure of foregone latent image and its effect, and erasure level. Erasure thoroughness for CR acceptance test from American Association of Physicist in Medicine (AAPM) Report 93 (2006) was also evaluated. Measurements were made on a CR (Agfa CR 25; Agfa, BELGIUM) system. Chest postero-anterior (PA), Hand PA, L-spine lateral radiographs were chosen for evaluation. Chest phantom (3D-torso; CIRS, USA) was used for Chest PA and L-spine lateral radiography. For Hand PA radiography, projections was done without phantom. Except Hand PA radiographs, noise was increased with delay time, and ghost image was appeared on overexposed area. Effect of delay after erasure on latent image was not seen on naked eye, but standard deviation (SD) of pixel value on overexposed area was relatively higher than that of other areas. On Hand PA and Chest PA radiographs, noise were not occurred by adjustment of erasure level. On L-spine lateral images at lower erasure level than standard level, noise including ghost image were occurred because of high tube current. Erasure thoroughness of CR system in our department was to be proved by these evaluation. The results of this study could be used as a baseline for IP initialization and reliability of CR images.

  • This study evaluated the efficacy of an office bleaching gel (RemeWhite, Remedent Inc., Deurle, Belgium) containing 30% hydrogen peroxide. 31 volunteers were recieved office bleaching with the RemeWhite for 3 times at one visit, total 2 visits. As control group, the same gel in which hydrogen peroxide was not included was applied to 31 volunteers with the same protocol. The shade change (${\Delta}E^*$, color difference) of 12 anterior teeth was measured using Colorimerter and Vitapan classical shade guide. The shade change of overall teeth in the experimental group was significantly greater than that in the control group which was measured using Colorimeter. There was also a significant difference between baseline and 14 weeks or 26 weeks though color rebounding phenomenon occurred as time went by. Small shade change difference can be measured accurately using Colorimeter than using Vitapan classical shade guide.

  • The nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) balances in Korea during 1985-2006, which calculated according to the surface balance method of the PARCOM guidelines, continually increased with the lapse of year, and then might keep the highest levels with about $250kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ and $50kg\;P\;ha^{-1}$ in 2006 among OECD countries. National phosphorus balance of the developed OECD countries (Belgium, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands) in the livestock feeding industries has significantly decreased, due to limit livestock feeding density and nutrient application level by using strong legislation. However, Korean P balance was not apparent decrease, since the number of livestock feeding heads has been increasing, irrespective with the decrease of chemical fertilizer consumption. Manure P portion to the total P input amount of the above four OECD Countries in nutrient balance has continuously inclined to 60-70%. Therefore, the large portion of livestock manure might be used as nutrient source in agricultural side in these countries. In particular, manure P application levels of Belgium and The Netherlands, which have relatively high P balance and manure P portion to total P input dose, was estimated to be $31-33\;kg\;p\;ha^{-1}$ in 2004, and it was similar level with that of Korea in 2006. The manure P application levels for agricultural purpose has continuously decreased in these two OECD countries. In contrast, our manure P application rate continuously increased, and therefore we need the strong political countermeasure to control livestock feeding density at the resonable level.

  • The name of a place represents the social and political power relations as well as showing a certain physical space. In particular, the East Sea is not only a representative name of areas represent our country, but also the name of place being in competition with the Sea of Japan internationally. Korea is committed in many ways to spread the name of East Sea in the international community, and gradually expand its name power. The purpose of this study was to investigate the names used in the newspapers and broadcasting in Francophone countries except France by analyzing the newspaper articles and broadcasting contents, and to illuminate how the names of the East Sea produced in France, and the discussion about the names were diffused in Francophone countries and what kind of influence they had on those countries. This study selected Algeria in North Africa, Belgium and Luxembourg in West Europe, and Quebec in Canada for the research areas. As a result, while Algeria in North Africa and Luxembourg are showing inhospitality to the name East Sea, Belgium and Quebec are taking a flexible attitude toward this name. In general, most Francophone countries are provided with press releases from AFP in France. Even in same article provided by AFP, The result shows that some media stick to use the name Sea of Japan solely, and others demonstrate a will to use both name East Sea and Sea of Japan simultaneously. This study was able to show that the diffusion and spread of the place name was significantly influenced by social, political interests and powers, the mess geopolitics in pop cultural materials.

  • Invasive alien species are considered to be one of the main factors that cause biodiversity loss. Establishment of management strategies through continuous monitoring and risk assessment is a key element for invasive alien species management policy. In the present study, we introduce examples of ecological risk assessment tools developed in Japan, Germany-Austria and Belgium. Invasive alien species have been designated in Japan based on the assessment of risks to ecosystems, human health and primary industry. German-Austrian Black List Information System categorized alien species into Black List, White List and Grey List according to their risks to biodiversity. In the Harmonia Information System developed in Belgium, invasiveness, adverse impacts on native species and ecosystem functions and invasion stages were assessed and alien species were categorized into Black List, Watch List and Alert List. These international risk assessment tools may be helpful to improve our national risk assessment protocol for the prioritization of invasive alien species management.

  • The aim of this study was to compare the effects of anti curvature filing with stainless steel k-file versus nickel-titanium ProFile in the shaping of mesial root canals of extracted mandibular molars. A total of 60 canals from 30 mesial roots of mandibular molar teeth were randomly assigned to three groups with n=20 each. They were prepared with different instruments and methods: The first group with stainless steel k-file and circumferential filing. the second with precurved stainless steel k-file and anticurvature filing and the third with ProFile C06 taper) and anticurvature filing. Using a micro-computed tomography system (skyscan-1076, SKYSCAN, Antwerpen, Belgium), pre-and post-operative specimens were scanned. Subsequently, canal images were superimposed and changes in root dentin thickness were measured at distal side (danger zone) of the canal. The data was analyzed using a one-way ANOVA and the comparison of means was conducted using a post hoc multiple comparison Tukey test. There were significant differences in the change of root dentin thickness at the $7.5{\sim}8.5\;mm$ level between group 1 and 2, $3.5{\sim}6mm$ level between group 1 and 3 and $3.5{\sim}6mm$ level between group 2 and 3(n=20, P<0.05).
