  • In tall constructions, the outriggers are regarded as a structural part capable of effectively resisting lateral loads. This study analyses the efficacy of hybrid outrigger system in high rise RCC building for various structural parameters identified. For variations in α, which is defined as the ratio of the relative flexural stiffness of the core to the axial rigidity of the column, static and dynamic analyses of hybrid outrigger system having a virtual and a conventional outrigger at two distinct levels were conducted in the present study. An investigation on the optimal outrigger position was performed by taking the results from absolute maximum inter storey drift ratio (ISDmax), roof acceleration (accroof), roof displacement (disproof), and base bending moment under both wind and seismic loads on analytical models having 40, 60 and 80 storeys. An ideal performance index parameter was introduced and was utilized to obtain the optimal position of the hybrid outrigger system considering the combined response of ISDmax, accroof, disproof and, criteria required for the structure under wind and seismic loads. According to the behavioural study, increasing the column area and outrigger arm length will maximise the performance of the hybrid outrigger system. The analysis results are summarized in a flowchart which provides the optimal positions obtained for each dependent parameter and based on ideal performance index which can be used to make initial suggestions for installing a hybrid outrigger system.

  • The determination of the blast protection level and the corresponding minimum load-bearing capacity for a laminated glass (LG) window is of crucial importance for safety and security design purposes. In this paper, the focus is given to the window response under near-field blast loading, i.e., where relatively small explosives would be activated close to the target, representative of attack scenarios using small commercial drones. In general, the assessment of the load-bearing capacity of a window is based on complex and expensive experiments, which can be conducted for a small number of configurations. On the other hand, nowadays, validated numerical simulations tools based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) are available to partially substitute the physical tests for the assessment of the performance of various LG systems, especially for the far-field blast loading. However, very little literature is available on the LG window performance under near-field blast loads, which differs from far-field situations in two points: i) the duration of the load is very short, since the blast wavelength tends to increase with the distance and ii) the load distribution is not uniform over the window surface, as opposed to the almost plane wave configuration for far-field configurations. Therefore, the current study focuses on the performance assessment and structural behaviour of LG windows under near-field blasts. Typical behavioural trends are investigated, by taking into account possible relevant damage mechanisms in the LG window components, while size effects for target LG windows are also addressed under a multitude of blast loading configurations.

  • A strategic structure when exposed to direct hit of conventional bomb/projectile are severely damaged because of large amounts of energy released by the impact and penetration of bomb. When massive concrete slabs suffer a direct hit, the energy released during impact and penetration process are able to easily break up large mass of concrete. When over stressed under such impact of bombs, the concrete structure fails showing brittle behavioural nature. This paper is intended to study and suggest the protective measures for structures used for strategic application by adopting a means to dissipate the large quantum of energy released. To quantitatively evaluate the force, displacement and energy in such scenario, a fine numerical model of the proposed layered structure of different combinations was built in ANSYS programme in which tri-nitrotoluene (TNT) explosive was detonated at penetration depth calculated for GP1000 Lbs bomb. The distinct blast mitigation effect of the proposed structure was demonstrated by adopting various layers/barriers created as protective measures for the strategic structure. The calculated result shows that the blast effect on the structure is potentially reduced due to provision of buster slab with sand cushioning provided as protective measure to the main structure. This concept of layered protective measures may be adopted for safeguarding strategic structures such as Domes, Tunnels and Underground Structures.

  • Safety culture is a collection of the beliefs, perceptions and values that employees share in relation to risks within an organisation. On the other hand, a resilient safety culture (RSC) means a culture with readiness of the organisation to respond effectively under stress, bounce back from shocks and continuously learn from them. RSC helps organisations to protect their interest which can be attributed to behavioural, psychological and managerial capabilities of the organization. Quantification of the degree of resilience in an organisation's safety culture can provide insights about the strong and weak links of the organisation's overall health and safety situation by identifying potential causes of system or sub-system failure. One of the major challenges of quantification of RSC is that the attributes that determine RSC need to be measured through constructs and indicators which are complex and often interrelated. In this paper, we address this challenge by applying a fault tree analysis (FTA) technique which can help analyse complex and interrelated constructs and indicators. The fault tree model of RSC is used to evaluate resilience levels of two organisations with remote and urban locations in order to demonstrate the failure path of the weak links in the RSC model.

  • Internet of Things (IoT) is a relatively new concept that has gained immense popularity in a short period of time due to its wide applicability in making human life more convenient and automated. As an illustration: the development of smart homes, smart cities, etc. However, it is also accompanied by a substantial number of risks and flaws. IoT makes use of low-powered devices, so secure, less time-consuming and energy-intensive transmission (routing) of messages due to the limited availability of energy is one of the many and most significant concerns for IoT developers. The following paper presents a trust-based routing scenario for the Internet of Things (IoT) that exploits the past transmission record from the cupcarbon simulator's log files. Artificial Neural Network is used to quantify knowledge of trust, calculate the value of trust, and share this information with other network devices. As a human behavioural pattern, trust provides a superior method for making routing decisions. If there is a tie in the trust values and no other path is available, the remaining battery power is used to break the tie and make a forwarding decision; this is also seen as a more efficient use of the available resources. The proposed algorithm is observed to have superior energy consumption and routing decisions compared to conventional routing algorithms, and it improves the communication pattern.

  • Australia has joined many governments to adopt public-private partnership (PPP) as a major strategy for procuring infrastructure for decades. However, failures have occurred although the market has been considered to be a mature and sophisticated one. Failures have typically been traced back to inappropriate economic evaluation and a lack of value-for-money. In particular, a literature review has identified that there was no holistic consideration on the evaluation of procurement transactions of PPP projects. The transaction costs of PPPs were not handled properly. In this paper, theories of transaction cost economics are proposed for the purpose of such a holistic institutional economic evaluation. These theories are analysed in order to identify potential critical success factors for a strategic infrastructure procurement framework. The potential critical success factors are identified and grouped into a number of categories that match the theories of transaction cost economics. These categories include (1) Asset Specificity, (2) Organizational Capability, (3) Transaction Frequency, (4) Behavioural Uncertainty, and (5) Environmental Uncertainty. These potential critical success factors may be subject to an empirical test in the future. The proposed framework will offer decision makers with an insight into project life cycle economic outcomes needed to successfully deliver PPPs.

  • Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is rare atypical Parkinsonism accompanied by various psycho-behavioural problems. In this case report, we describe the diagnostic and treatment progress of a 65-year-old PSP patient who visited the psychiatric clinic with a depressed mood and lumbar pain resulting in a suicide attempt. Over the course of 30 months of treatment, typical characteristics of PSP, such as postural instability, dyskinesia, cognitive dysfunction and supranuclear gaze palsy, became prominent, and magnetic resonance imaging and the F-18 FP-CIT positron emission tomography revealed midbrain atrophy and reduced dopamine uptake in the basal ganglia. When treating elderly patients with depression, parkinsonism symptoms such as gait disturbances, frequent falls, tremors, and rigidity should be closely examined.

  • The study makes several contributions to not only the adoption literature by examining the influence of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Big-Five traits on adoption of Augmented Reality (AR) but also given its utility in both industry and research, it contributes to the interesting inter-disciplinary domain of psychology, information systems, and human behaviour. A quantitative based approach using a sample of 275 respondents was undertaken. It is found that emotional intelligence influence both perceived ease-of-use and perceived usefulness. They in turn influence intention to use. Another important observation is that personality traits (openness and agreeableness) have a significant moderating effect on the relation between attitude and intention to use AR. This research will help academicians and executives working on the adoption of AR in various sectors ranging from retail industry to the education sector. The originality of this study is that it explores the impact of EI on the acceptance of AR and helps in extending the literature in interdisciplinary research.
