  • This study aimed to show the effects of Korean medicine treatment (particularly bee-venom pharmacopunture) on a patient with brachial plexus palsy. A 64-year-old woman was diagnosed with brachial plexus palsy on the right upper extremity and was treated with Korean and Western medicine from September 30th to November 6th, 2019. Improvement of the patient's symptoms was evaluated using the Manual Muscle Test, Range of Motion and visual analogue scale. After treatment, the patient's Manual Muscle Test grade and Range of Motion were improved, and the Visual Analogue Scale score indicated the intensity of her right hand numbness had decreased. These results suggested that improper use of crutches can result in brachial plexus palsy and a Korean-Western medicine treatment regimen primarily focused on bee-venom pharmacopunture, may be effective in reducing the symptoms of brachial plexus palsy.

  • Objective : This study was designed to investigate the anti-cancer effects of bee venom on melanoma in C57BL mice. Materials and Methods : For the induction of melanoma, C57BL mice were treated by DMBA(7, 12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene). Each group of C57BL mouse was treated with DMBA $50{\mu}g$, $75{\mu}g$, $100{\mu}g$ respectively once a week for 15 weeks. Tumor generation in each group of 10 mice was observed. Cumulative curves were showed in the density and frequency of skin tumor generation. To know the effects of pre-treatment of bee venom on tumor generation by DMBA treatment(frequency of tumor generation), Each group of C57BL mouse was pretreated and treated with bee venom $5{\mu}{\ell}$, $25{\mu}{\ell}$, $50{\mu}{\ell}$ respectively once a week for 3 weeks, whereafter each mouse was treated with DMBA $100{\mu}g$ once a week for 15 weeks. Results and Conclusion (1) There was chemotherapeutic effect, but not chemopreventive effect. (2) Cpp32 activity was increased by $50{\mu}{\ell}$ bee venom treatment. (3) Bee venom treatment inhibited expression of cell-cycle regulating, growth-promoting genes such as c-Jun, c-Fos, and Cyclin Dl, and increased tumor suppressors p53 and p21/Wafl. (4) Bee venom treatment activated expression of a representative apoptosis-inducing gene Bax.

  • In the present study, We have investigated the bee venom (BV) and melittin (a major component of BV)-mediated anti-proliferative effects, and defined its mechanisms of action in cultured rat aortic vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). BV and melittin $(0.4{\sim}0.8\;{\mu}g/ml)$ effectively inhibited 5% FBS-induced VSMCs proliferations. The regulation of apoptosis has attracted much attention as a possible means of eliminating excessively proliferating VSMCs. In the present study, the treatment of BV and melittin strongly induced apoptosis of VSMCs. These results suggest that the anti-proliferative effects of BV and melittin in VSMCs should be related with induction of apoptosis. Further study about Influence of BV and melittin upon apoptosis mechanism is therefor thought to be necessary to confirm the above results.

  • A 6-year-old, castrated male Shih-tzu dog was presented due to left side facial paralysis with head tilt. Neurological examination revealed absence of facial sensation, menance response, and palpebral reflex on the left side. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), intracranial intra-arachnoid cyst (IIAC) was noted. The dog was poor response to steroid and dieuretic therapy. Based on characteristic historical and clinical findings, and excluding of other causes of acute facial nerve dysfunction, the dog was tentatively diagnosed as idiopathic facial paralysis. The clinical signs were improved gradually after acupuncture therapy with bee venom. Eight weeks after initial acupuncture with bee venom, the patient recovered sensory and neurological facial signs. This case report demonstrates that bee venom acupuncture for an idiopathic facial paralysis could be useful in a dog.
