Turbocharging is widely used in diesel and gasoline engines as an effective way to reduce fuel consumption. But turbochargers have turbo-lag due to mechanical friction losses. Bearing friction losses are a major cause of mechanical friction losses and are particularly intensified in the lower speed range of the engine. Current turbochargers mostly use oil bearings (two journal bearings and one thrust bearing). In this study, we focus on the bearing friction in the lower speed range. Experimental equipment was made using a drive motor, load cell, magnetic coupling, and oil control system. We measured the friction losses of the turbocharger while considering the influence of the rotation speed, oil temperature, and pressure. The friction power losses increased exponentially when the turbocharger speed increased.

Introduction of intermittent electricity production systems like wind and solar power to electricity market together with the deregulation of electricity markets resulted in numerous start/stops, load variations and off-design operation of water turbines. Hydraulic turbines suffer from the varying loads exerted on their stationary and rotating parts during load variations since they are not designed for such operating conditions. Investigations on part load operation of single regulated turbines, i.e., Francis and propeller, proved the formation of a rotating vortex rope (RVR) in the draft tube. The RVR induces pressure pulsations in the axial and rotating directions called plunging and rotating modes, respectively. This results in oscillating forces with two different frequencies on the runner blades, bearings and other rotating parts of the turbine. This study investigates the effect of transient operations on the pressure fluctuations exerted on the runner and mechanism of the RVR formation/mitigation. Draft tube and runner blades of the Porjus U9 model, a Kaplan turbine, were equipped with pressure sensors for this purpose. The model was run in off-cam mode during different load variations. The results showed that the transients between the best efficiency point and the high load occurs in a smooth way. However, during transitions to the part load a RVR forms in the draft tube which induces high level of fluctuations with two frequencies on the runner; plunging and rotating mode. Formation of the RVR during the load rejections coincides with sudden pressure change on the runner while its mitigation occurs in a smooth way.

This paper investigates the radial performance of self-acting spiral-grooved air bearing, used to support small high-speed rotating bodies. Repeatable runout, nonrepeatable runout, stiffness and supporting load are selected as the performance. The clearance between rotor and stator, the stator groove depth, and the rotating speed are chosen as three main parameters affecting the performances. Force application and displacement measurement are done in a noncontact manner, in order not to disturb operation: electromagnetic force is applied to the rotor and gap sensors are used to measure the displacement of the rotor. Experimental results show that repeatable runout decreases as speed, groove depth and clearance decrease. Nonrepeatable runout decreases as clearance decreases, and it has a minimum value at $5.5{\mu}m$ of grove depth and a maximum value at speed of 18.000rpm. Stiffness increases as speed increases and clearance decreases, and has a maximum value around $5.5{\mu}m$ of groove depth. The relationship between force and displacement is linear for small displacement, but becomes nonlinear for large displacement. Supporting load is linearly proportional to the stiffness, and it is a maximum value around $4.75{\mu}m$ of clearance.
With the increase in adoption of tilting pad journal bearings (TPJBs), various failure mechanisms related to TPJBs have been reported, of which pad wear is a frequently reported one. Pad wear causes change in geometry of the bearing, which can sometimes result in the failure of the entire system. The objective of this research is to investigate the influence of pad wear on the pad temperature, which is one of the widely used condition monitoring methods for TPJBs. For the theoretical investigation, thermohydrodynamic (THD) analysis was conducted by solving the generalized Reynolds equation and the 3D energy equation. The results of the analysis show that the temperature of the loaded pad increases while that of the unloaded pad decreases, when there is wear on the loaded pads. In addition, the minimum film thickness decreases with an increase in the wear depth. A validation test was conducted with a test rig, which mimics the axial turbine when a test rotor is supported by two TPJBs. The test bearing consists of five pads with a diameter of 60 mm, and a resistance temperature detector (RTD) is installed in the pad for temperature monitoring. The test was performed by replacing the two loaded pads with the worn pad. The test result for the TPJB with wear depth of $30{\mu}m$ show that the temperatures of the loaded pads are $8^{\circ}C$ higher and that of the unloaded pad is $2.5^{\circ}C$ lower than that of the normal TPJB. In addition, the predicted pad temperature shows good agreement with the measured pad temperatures.

This paper summarizes the application of a rational methodology for the structural assessment of older reinforced concrete Tunisian bridges. This methodology is based on ambient vibration measurement of the bridge, identification of the structure's modal signature and finite element model updating. The selected case study is the Boujnah bridge of the Tunis-Msaken Highway. This bridge is made of a continuous four-span simply supported reinforced concrete slab without girders resting on elastomeric bearings at each support. Ambient vibration tests were conducted on the bridge using a data acquisition system with nine force-balance accelerometers placed at selected locations of the bridge. The Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition technique was applied to extract the dynamic characteristics of the bridge. The finite element model was updated in order to obtain a reasonable correlation between experimental and numerical modal properties. For the model updating part of the study, the parameters selected for the updating process include the concrete modulus of elasticity, the elastic bearing stiffness and the foundation spring stiffnesses. The primary objective of the paper is to demonstrate the use of the Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition technique combined with model updating to provide data that could be used to assess the structural condition of the selected bridge. The application of the proposed methodology led to a relatively faithful linear elastic model of the bridge in its present condition.

A flywheel system is an electromechanical energy storage device that stores energy by rotating a rotor. The rotating part, supported by magnetic bearings, consists of the metallic shaft, composite rims of fiber-reinforced materials, and a hub that connects the rotor to the shaft. The delamination in the fiber wound composite rotor often lowered the performance of the flywheel energy storage system. In this work, an advanced hybrid composite rotor with a split hub was designed to both overcome the delamination problem in composite rim and prevent separation between composite rim and metallic shaft within all range of rotational speed. It was analyzed using a three-dimensional finite clement method. In order to demonstrate the predominant perfom1ance of the hybrid composite rotor with a split hub, a high spin test was performed up to 40,000 rpm. Four radial strains and another four circumferential strains were measured using a wireless telemetry system. These measured strains were in excellent agreement with the FE analysis. Most importantly, the radial strains were reduced using the hybrid composite rotor with a split hub, and all of them were compressive. As a conclusion, a compressive pressure on the inner surface of the proposed flywheel rotor was achieved, and it can lower the radial stresses within the composite rotor, enhancing the performance of the flywheel rotor.
This paper concerns the applications of the Kalman filter to navigation and the develment of computer programs of the navigational calculations. Methods to apply the Kalman filter to celestial fix, fix by cross bearing and cocked hat are proposed, and numerical simulations under various noise conditiions are conducted. The accuracy of the optimal positions obtained by the Kalman filter is compared with that of the fixed positiions by radial error method. In the case of celestial fix, an algorithm to estimate the optimal positions by using the linear Kalman filter is presented. The optimal positions by the Kalman filter are compared with the running fixes and with the most probable positions obtained from a single line of position. It is confirmed that the resutls of the proposed method are more accurate than the others. In practical piloting, bearings are generally measured intermittently and the measurement process is nonlinear. It is, therefore, difficult for us to apply the Kalman filter to fix by cross bearing. In order to be used in such an unfavorable case, the extended Kalman filter is revised and the aplicability of the revised extended Kalman filter is checked by numerical simulation under various noise conditions. In a cocked hat, an inside or outside fix is dependent only upon azimuth spread, if the error of each line of position is assumed to be equal both in magnitude and sign. A new technique of selecting a ship's position between an inside fix and an outside fix in a cocked hat by using fix determinant derived from the equation of three lines of position is also presented. The relations among the optimal position by Kalman filter, incentre (or excentre) and random error centtre of the cocked hat are discussed theoretically and the accuracy of the optimal position is compared with that of the others by numerical simulation.
Mechanical surface treatment is an excellent approach widely used to modulate and improve the performance and service life of bearings, gears, and frictional joints. The main purpose of this study is to investigate and compare the effect of ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) and wonder process craft (WPC) on the surface and tribological properties of SUJ2 bearing steel. The surface roughness and hardness of the untreated and treated (UNSM- and WPC-treated) specimens were measured and compared. Their tribological properties were evaluated using a micro-tribometer under grease-lubricated and dry conditions against itself. Surface hardness measurement results revealed that both the UNSM- and WPC-treated specimens had a higher hardness than that of the untreated specimen. The surface roughness of the untreated specimen was reduced after UNSM and WPC treatments. Abrasive wear mode was observed on the surface of the specimens worn under grease-lubricated conditions, while adhesive wear mode was found on the surface of the specimens worn in dry conditions. According to the tribological test results, the friction coefficient and wear rate of the untreated specimens were reduced by the application of both the UNSM and WPC treatments under grease-lubricated and dry conditions.

Generally, the gap-and-sag method is used in the shipbuilding stage before coupling the shafts to check whether they are installed at the same position as designed and derived from shaft alignment calculation. The primary installed propeller shaft becomes a reference point, the position of the remaining shafts are sequentially determined through the gap-and-sag value derived from the deflection and deflection angle at each shaft flange by own weight. If the reference point varies against the design value, it would have a series of effects on the installation of the remaining shafts. Moreover, after coupling the shafts, even if the bearing reaction forces derived from measurement are satisfied by the allowable limit range, consequently it might have an adverse effect on the stability of the shafting system by not being able to estimate the relative slope angle between the propeller shaft and the after-stern tube bearing. In this paper, to deal with above-mentioned phenomenon, the theoretical calculations related to designing an effective support point of the aft stern tube bearing and analysis by measurement is conducted through a case of open-up inspections. Based on this, a shaft installation guideline is proposed to minimize the misalignment related to preventing wiping damage of the after-stern tube bearing.

The design of railroad bridges differs from road bridges because of the interface between track structure and bridge structure. The track generally consists of Continuous Welded Rail(CWR) which is fixed by fasteners to the sleepers embedded in the ballast. The ballast provides the interface between the track structure and the bridge structure. Large longitudinal forces can develop from the temperature variation in rail and bridge structure. These longitudinal forces are specially important for long bridges because the bridge layout for span length, pier dimensions and arrangement and type of bearings can be governed by these forces. This report provides a comparison of longitudinal track forces determined by analysis and actual measured track forces. In recent practice the longitudinal track force for European railways is analyzed using a finite element analysis method. This method is very time-consuming and requires the detail design of the bridge to be complete. Redesign is required if the design criteria for longitudinal track forces are not satisfied. There is a need to develop a simple analysis method considering the large number of bridge structures and a relatively short design time on the Korean High Speed Rail Project. The analysis results presented herein, based on a simplified analysis, show good agreement with those obtained by finite element analysis, as well as with those measured on an actual track. The proposed analysis method is particularly useful for the preliminary design of bridge structures.
