  • Generally seismic isolation is achieved by supporting the structure on laminated rubber bearings, friction pendulum bearings, roller bearings etc. Very little work has been performed using soil as a base isolation media. Experiments and analytical work has been performed on a structural model with isolated footing and found encouraging results. Details of this work are presented in this paper.

  • The present work deals with the theoretical prediction of static & dynamic characteristic of annular type externally pressurized thrust air bearings with metal-sintered porous media. For the evaluation of surface loading effect by machining, it is assumed that the flow at the porous surface is dominant and which is equivalent to the flow through orifice. Finite different method with over-relaxation method is used to solve the numerical problems. The influences of radius ratio, supply pressure and squeeze number on performances are investigated, as the results. The results of this study can be used to predict the optimal running condition and stable realm of porous bearings.

  • A finite element approach to analyzing the film pressure of engine bearings has been presented based on the viscosity-temperature equations. The calculated results from each viscosity model are compared with each other for various temperature models of the oil film. The FEM results show that the appropriate selection of the viscosity-temperature model is very important factor for analyzing the film pressure distribution of engine bearings.

  • The externally pressurized air journal bearings which have two circumferential grooves with inherently compensated restrictors are analyzed. Two circumferential grooves with restrictors are made on the bearing surface in order to increase the stiffness and damping coefficients. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics such as stiffness and damping coefficients of this type of bearings are calculated. As a result of theoretical analysis, it is verified that there exist the groove depth and the distance between two grooves which generate the maximum stiffness at the given bearing dimensions.

  • In this study, the nondimensional load capacity of water hydrodynamic journal bearings is calculated. A generalized coordinate formulation is applied to handle the complexity of bearing geometry. A window-based analysis program is developed to analysis the cylindrical hydrostatic bearings. Load capacities are calculated according to some design parameters such as clearance, diameter of orifice, size of recesses and temperature. The results are presented and discussed.

  • A new diagnosis method is developed in this paper, in which the fuzzy set theory is introduced to diagnose the defects of rolling element bearings. The selection of membership function and the fuzzy operation model are discussed in detail here. The system is successfully used for various defects diagnosis of rolling element bearings.

  • Fault tolerant control algorithm fer heteropolar magnetic bearings are presented. This fault tolerant control utilizes grouping of currents as C-cores in order to isolate magnetic fluxes. Hardware requirements to maintain fault tolerant control are reduced since decoupling chokes are not required in this control scheme. The currents supplied to each pole are redistributed, if some coils (ail suddenly, such that the resultant magnetic forces should remain invariant through coil failure events. (omitted)

  • The theory for a novel fault-tolerant 4-active-pole homopolar magnetic bearing is developed. If any one coil of the four coils in the bearing actuator fail, the remaining three coil currents change via an optimal distribution matrix such that the same opposing pole, C-core type, control fluxes as those of the un-failed bearing are produced. The hompolar magnetic bearing thus provides unaltered magnetic forces without any loss of the bearing load capacity even if any one coil suddenly fails. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the novel fault-tolerant, 4-active pole homopolar magnetic bearings.

  • A theoretical analysis has been undertaken to show the influence of bearing geometry on the steady state characteristics of air lubricated spherical tilting pad bearings. The geometry variations considered are the number of pads, the eccentricity ratio, the direction of load, and the preloading. Dynamic characteristic equations are derived with pad assembly method.
