In this thesis, appearance inspection, compressive strength of concrete test, arrangement of bar inspection, survey, and bearing stress analysis were performed on a damaged coping of reinforced concrete pier to investigate the damage cause. According to the performed a series of inspections, it was found that the coping of pier was damaged during PSC (Pre-stressed Concrete) beam construction. In this thesis, the repair method for damaged pier was studied. The repair procedure used in this thesis was follows : chipping for damaged part, clean by high-pressure, installation of wire mesh, coating of surface hardening, construction of section restoration material, copula grinding, and prevent coating for far-infrared radiation.
A compression lap splice can be calculated longer than a tension lap splice in high strength concrete according to current design codes. New criteria for the compression lap splice including the effects of concrete strength are required for practical purpose of ultra-high strength concrete. Characteristics of compression lap splice have been extensively investigated and main parameters are derived. In addition, an experimental study has been conducted with column specimens in concrete strength of 40 and 60 MPa. The strength of the compression lap splice consists of bond and end bearing and two contributors are combined. Therefore, combined action of bond and end bearing should be assessed. Compared with tension splices, concrete strength significantly affects the strength of compression splices due to short splice length and existence of end bearing. Test results show that the splice strength can be evaluated to be proportional to square root of compressive strength of concrete. The stress states of concrete surrounding spliced bars govern the strengths of bond and end bearing. Because the axial stress of the concrete is relatively high, the splice strength is not dependent on clear spacing. End bearing strength is not affected by splice length and clear spacing and is expressed with a function of the square root of concrete strength. The failure mode of specimens is similar to side-face blowout of pullout test of anchors and the strength of end bearing can be evaluated using the equation of side-face blowout strength. Because the stresses developed by bond in compression splices are nearly identical to those in tension splices, strength increment of compression splices is attributed to end bearing only.

In this paper, path-independent values of the J-integral in the fininte element context for arbitrary two-dimensional and three-dimensional crack configurations in welds are presented. For the fracture mechanics analysis of cracks in welds, residual stress analysis and fracture analysis must be performed simultaneously. In the analysis of cracked bodies containing residual stress, the usual domain integral formulation results in path-dependent values of the J-integral. This paper discusses modifications of the conventional J-integral that yield path independence in the presence of residual stress generated by welding. The residual stress problem is treated as an initial strain problem and the J-integral modified for this class of problem is used. And a finite element program which can evaluate the J-integral for cracks in two-dimensional and three-dimensional residual stress bearing bodies is developed using the modified J-integral definition. The situation when residual stress only is present is examed as is the case when mechanical stresses are applied in conjunction with a residual stress field.

The use of pile foundations has become more popular in recent years, as the combined action of the pile cap and the piles can increase the bearing capacity, reduce settlement, and the piles can be arranged so as to reduce differential deflection in the pile cap. Piles are relatively long, slender members that transmit foundation loads through soil strata of low bearing capacity to deeper soil or rock strata having a high bearing capacity. In this study analysis of pile cap with considering different parameters like depth of the pile cap, width and breadth of the pile cap, type of piles and different types of soil which affect the behaviour of pile cap foundation is carried out by using Finite Element Software ANSYS. For understanding the settlement behaviour of pile cap foundation, parametric studies have been carried out in four types of clay by varying pile cap dimensions with two types of piles namely normal and under-reamed piles for different group of piles. Furthermore, the analysis results of settlement and stress values for the pile cap with normal and under-reamed piles are compared. From the study it can be concluded that settlement values of pile cap with under-reamed pile are less than the settlements of pile cap with normal pile. It means that the ultimate load bearing capacity of pile cap with under-reamed piles are greater than the pile cap with normal piles.

Bearing stress near anchor plates is usually very high due to prestressing force in anchorage zone of concrete structure used post-tensioned prestressed method. In order to effective utilization of cross section and crack control, appropriate size of anchorage plates should be used to prevent crack initiation and failure of concrete structures eventually. This study aims to suggest equation for effective area of bearing plate of rectangle type and circular type by Highway Bridge Design Specification and PTI etc. A shape factor according to bearing plate shape is suggested based on numerical analysis, and it can be used suitability for design of special anchorage plate dimension.

No specific guidelines are available for computing the bearing strength of connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall in a hybrid wall system. There were carried out analytical and experimental studies on connection between steel coupling beam and concrete shear wall in a hybrid wall system. The bearing stress at failure in the concrete below the embedded steel coupling beam section is related to the concrete compressive strength and the ratio of the width of the embedded steel coupling beam section to the thickness of the shear walls. Experiments were carried out to determine the factors influencing the bearing strength of the connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall. The test variables included the reinforcement details that confer a ductile behavior in connection between steel coupling beam and shear wall, i.e., the auxiliary stud bolts attached to the steel beam flanges and the transverse ties at the top and the bottom steel beam flanges. In addition, additional test were conducted to verify the strength equations of the connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall. The proposed equations in this study were in good agreement with both our test results and other test data from the literature.
Light weight filling method prevents settlement of ground by decreasing the weight of fills. This method is increasingly used for it's convenience and workability. Styrofoam is increasingly used as a lightweight filling material in soft ground. The beneficial effects of the use of EPS derive from minimizing the stress increment, increasing the bearing capacity and reducing the settlement. For this study, model test and FEM analysis of bearing capacity is carried out composing two-layered ground with clay in the lower layer and lightweight filling material in upper layer. Based on the results obtained here in this study, it is concluded that the use of recycled EPS beads is acceptable lightweight fill. Light weight fills used for disposal is superior to typical embankment fills in bearing capacity.
A study has been made on defects which are formed in manufacturing processes of engine bearing and also on fatigue crack growth behavior in each step of bearing metal manufacturing. After the first step(sinter brass powder on steel plate ; Series A) many voids are made on brass surface and its size is decreased by the second step(rolling process of sintered plate ; Series B). After the third step(re-sintering step of brass powder and rolling ; Series C) the number of voids is decreased and its type shows line. The time of fatigue crack initiation and the growth rate of fatigue crack are in order of Series A, Series B, Series C. These reasons are that void fosters the crack initiation and growth, and residual stress made by rolling process effects on the crack growth rate in Series B, C. In forming and machining processes by use of final bearing metal, crack was observed at internal corner of flange and peeling off was observed at junction between steel and brass. Owing to the above crack and peeling off, it is considered that there is a possibility of fatigue fracture during the application time.

To secure stability and availability of Rammed Aggregate Pier method as the foundation of a structure, the bearing capacity and failure behavior characteristics was studied through soil laboratory tests in a model ground. In this study, soil laboratory tests use carried out to find the applicability of RAP method as the foundation of a structure. And bearing capacity and the failure mechanism of RAP method was studied according to relative density($60\%,\;70\%,\;90\%$), diameter(45mm, 60mm, 70mm) of each pier ana depth(5cm, l0cm, 15cm, 20cm, 25cm, 30cm). Earth pressure cell is set up approach RAP and 1.0D space at RAP center. Bearing acpacity and the failure mechanism of RAP is investigated by load test As a result, bulging failure was happened in $5\~10cm\;(1.0D\~2.00)$ depth which the maximum lateral earth pressure is acting. Especially, diameter changing of RAP are in inverse proportion to the relative density and the lateral stress is very much influenced by the lateral earth pressure in every layer and tends to decrease according to depth.

In this study, two design examples of drilled shafts on soft ground in Ho-Chi-Minh City, Vietnam are introduced. One is for a 27-story apartment and the other is for a Arch bridge over Saigon river. Unlikely the normal cases in Korea, all of the bored pile foundations are supposed to be placed on soil layers. Therefore, skin friction between pile and ground is the most crucial design parameter. Three methods using SPT N value of sandy soil -Korean Road Bridge Code(1996), Reese and Wright (1977), and O'Neill and Reese (1988)- were adopted to obtain an ultimate axial bearing capacity. In order to verify the calculated bearing capacity, 3 sets of static load test and a Osterberg Cell test were performed at an apartment site and a bridge site respectively. LRFD (Load Resistance Factored Design) method was compared with ASD (Allowable Stress Design) method. On application of ASD method, safety factor for skin friction was adopted as 2 or 3 while safety factor for end bearing was 3. The design bearing capacities from ASD method matched well with those from LRFD method when safety factor for skin friction was adopted as 2.
